We've owned and rented to vacationers since Dec 2003. We live in the east bay, Walnut Creek and love vacationing in beautiful Tahoe.
Why the Owner Chose Truckee
We chose Tahoe Donner due to it's beauty & easy access to everything ie, skiing, lake, fishing & golf. It's only 2 mi to Hwy 80 and Reno is very close. Located only a 2-3 hr drive from the SF bay area. We love it so much we now have another house in the neighborhood. 4-6 bdrm & 3-4 bath. vrbo # 273183 Sleeps too many! Ha
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
this house is great. Not some old wornout ugly furniture house. Great decor & set up for 12 adults in beds. It's a "bunker" for sure. Enjoy a meal around the huge thick log table. Great place for families.

We just got back from staying at "Best bang for your Buck". This was our family's 2nd time staying here and once again we had a wonderful time. The only disappointment was the lack of snow, so instead of sledding down hills, we hiked them! This was a great way to start the New Year! My kids, ages 10 and 14, loved having their own room and hanging out by the fire. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cookware, and the cabin is close to many nice restaurants if we didn't feel like cooking. We are looking forward to coming back soon!!
Owner response:Hi Heidi, Thx once again for your repeat rentals. I'm glad to hear your family enjoyed theirselves despite the lack of snow so far this year. Quite unusual to be able to go hiking during the winter. How beautiful it is. We do have trail head's just down the street from the house so you must know about those. Great outdoors terrain. I look forward to hearing from you again soon. Thx, Tor

Outdated and dirty

The house was just plain dirty!!! Cobwebs on the walls, mold in both of the bathrooms, and the kitchen floor did not look like it had been mopped in ages. There was only one roll of TP per bathroom. This may not be the fault of the owner but more the cleaners. The cabin is dated. Lighting was poor with burned out lights. Linoleum was peeling in kitchen and downstairs bath and both showers had mold. My wife actually had the scrub out the showers. Window coverings were poor and falling apart. The dishes were dirty and half the glasses were so old they didn't even hold water. The house served its purpose and is cheaper than most.
Owner response:Very weird review. First time in 8 years I have ever heard these issues. 99% of my guests love the place and no one has claimed these issues. Cobwebs are normal in Tahoe and they reappear a couple days of being cleaned. "Out dated", no it's purposely rustic but nice. In fact we just put up a bunch on brand new wall coverings 6 mo ago. No mold, none. Don't know what you saw but the place is kept clean and nice. It is not the Hyatt Hotel and you didn't pay $1000/night either. You just can't please everyone all the time.......good luck. Tor

November, 2011 Stay

As the Team Leader for a crew of 11 that spent time in this cabin during the month of Novmeber, I can confidently say that the team enjoyed the cabin immensely. We really enjoyed the surrounding area firstly. It was close to Truckee, however far enough away to allow privacy to take in the beauty of the mountainous views. We also enjoyed the home away from home feeling with the large table big enough for all 11 of us, the fire place, the television, spacious kitchen, and quaint decorations. The bedrooms were perfect, large and very comfortable. The space was a perfect fit for 11 people, so I would imagine it could only be more comfortable with a more traditionally sized family. Thank you for your hospitality!

Cabin is located in a very quiet vacation home development close to Truckee + VERY REASONABLY PRICED. We spend two weeks every other year hiking in the US West and have rented several houses and cabins normally for 2 - 4 night stays. We spent 2 nights at this large cabin mid-Sept and were very comfortable hiking during the days and sleeping soundly at night. Kitchen was well stocked with everything needed to cook and prepare meals. Internet worked perfectly and there was a large dining table to spread out our trial maps and local brochures. Truckee (nearby - down the hill from cabin) is a friendly town for hikers, lots of small restaurants, we found everything we needed. Nice deck out back for relaxing. We enjoyed our stay and when we return to Truckee we will definitely stay here again. Perfect for skiers also it would seem.

After years of renting from a friend, we were hesitant renting from a stranger, but Tor was friendly, quick to answer questions, easy to get in touch with, his info is clear and concise. The house is comfortable and clean, just our size and style: felt like a home. It was fun to explore a new neighborhood of T-D, too: close to different T-D trails. The location of the house is convenient to town, not too far into T-D, which we also liked especially coming back from a long day hiking, tired and dirty and hungry. We love that the house is dog-friendly because our dogs are our "daughters" and enjoy hiking, too. We decided to go to Truckee this summer to "familiar and safe" instead of being newsworthy folks being washed down the Merced River or being somewhere we didn't feel safe to hike. We are glad to have discovered Tor so we can rent from him again in the future and recommend this house to our friends. We love coming to Truckee, and this particular week in July 2011 we put in about 70 miles of day hiking, coming back each evening to settle in comfortably at the McLean House.

We had 3 generations in our group- and the house was large enough to comfortably hold all of us! The elders used the downstairs bedroom and bathroom and they were very content with that. The young people had the upstairs and had their privacy and "space" from the adults. We also had 4 dogs with us and we had no problem having them outside on the deck both day and night. We had 4 cars and there was plenty of room for them and bikes, rafts , gear etc... We are a large and active family and it was a great house for us to rent-there was enough room and the house is very convenient to everything ( Donner Lake ,Lake Tahoe, Truckee River etc..) We had a very enjoyable time -Thank you very much Tor!

Great Rate!

Our family rented the McClean cabin and were so thankful for the great rate. We stayed as a single family and it was literally the most affordable place on VRBO. This was the first time we had rented a home vs. staying in a hotel. With an 11 year old and 22 year old, and everyone on different sleeping and eating schedules, the convenience of separate bedrooms and food there at the house made it a great fit for our family. Our only little bad boo boo, if you will, was bringing poorly fitted bed sheets that kept slipping off the plastic mattress pad in the downstairs bedroom. So if you rent there keep that in mind if you bring your own linen. Tor was kind to work with and we apppreciated him treating us like guests, not renters. Carol

This was our first time staying at the McLean cabin, and it was a great experience. The cabin is great and Tor is excellent with communication and answering any questions you may have. Its nice to find a pet friendly cabin in such a pretty place.
Owner response:Hi Jason, Thanks for the great review. I must say, you were so easy to work with too. You called me, I gave you a quote, you accepted, I sent you the rental agreement and you returned it as I requested and on time. Then you took good care of my house and left it in fine shape. I thank you. Sometimes people try and make it so much more difficult than it should be. Thanks for being a stand up guy. Nice to deal with. You are welcome back anytime. Tor

Lots of hidden costs. OK cabin, but a little tacky. Negotiated an extra two days for the weekend, but after they confirmed they received a better offer and cancelled our reservation and we moved out early. Read the contract very carefully for all the additional charges. Not a great experience and we won't be back.
Owner response:Dear renter, I am not surprised at your poor review. You told me I could trust you, then you lied to me and didn't hold up your end of the deal. Shame on you for your lack of integrity. You two were the worst experience I've had in 8 years. I did not extend your stay as I was very concerned for the protection of my house. When you take advantage and lie to people you lose their trust and I will never give you another chance to do that to me. You did not go by our agreement and abused my trust in you. My cleaners were horrified when they found the mess you left for them. Total lack of respect of one's property. In particular, you dumped soup into the pastic garbage can without using a plastic liner. That was just disrespectful. What a mess for the maids. The maids also reported you left the entire house a mess and especially the kitchen and refridgerator which took an extra hour to clean up. They wern't happy with you either. Good riddens!
