My family( my husband and 3 young boys) and I just stayed for 5 days and really enjoyed this place! Very cute and comfortable and the kitchen was very well equipped for someone like myself who loves to cook. The home was clean and tidy upon arrival and believe me, I am very picky. Love the location with all the pine trees surrounding the house too. Very affordable as well. I am making plans to return with my family again in August.

Don't go. We booked for 4 nights, but left at the 2nd night. The main reasons we left because it was bad shape and filthy. The bugs are everywhere. We asked a refund but the owner refused. Now, we are suing him.
Owner response:Sorry you don't like the mountains. It's true, there are bugs, bears and many other sorts of animals there. It is the Tahoe National Forest. It is quite different from the city where you live. When you complained, I did what I could to accomidate your demands ie sent out my maintence man to check out the place and turn back on, the natural gas valve you mistakenly turned off. I was billed $80 for that service call but didn't charge you. It is very difficult for us as vacation home owners to accomidate people not accustomed to the forests and the natural wildlife. Next time you visit the mountains you may want to consider renting a room at the Hyatt or some such hotel. It'll be expensive but probably more suitable for you. Not so rustic and natural. Good luck.

Our family really enjoyed our 4 night stay. Each year we end up at a different place due to cost and believe we have found a bang for our buck(s). Location is great to venture off just about anywhere for the day. We even went to Reno...to play and eat and only a 25 min drive. Kids enjoyed small sledding right next to the house. Nice neighborhood for walks and those who live there are friendly. Yes there are mountain bugs/spiders/animals but can guarantee every home has them even in the city, especially if no one is there everyday.
Owner response:Hi Rich, Glad to see your review. Hope you figured out that other issue. So you did like our house after all. good to hear. Great to hear you had a good time and enjoyed our cabin. We hope to hear from you and your referals again soon. Thanks so much for your appreciation and taking a minute to write your review. We truely enjoyed it. Til next time. Tor

My husband and I and another couple rented this place in January and we had a great time. The house is really cozy and comfortable. The decor has a great "mountain feel" with antique skis and rustic vintage poster art on the walls. The furniture is really comfortable and we loved the stone hearth with the classic vintage iron stove with gas burning logs in it. The kitchen is loaded with everything one needs for cooking big meals (which we did) and it is very clean and tidy. We loved it so much we are planning another getaway in the summer and have already made our reservations. The price is VERY reasonable too. We have been recommending it to our friends and family as well. You can't go wrong with this gem!

We just got back from staying at "Best bang for your Buck". This was our family's 2nd time staying here and once again we had a wonderful time. The only disappointment was the lack of snow, so instead of sledding down hills, we hiked them! This was a great way to start the New Year! My kids, ages 10 and 14, loved having their own room and hanging out by the fire. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cookware, and the cabin is close to many nice restaurants if we didn't feel like cooking. We are looking forward to coming back soon!!
Owner response:Hi Heidi, Thx once again for your repeat rentals. I'm glad to hear your family enjoyed theirselves despite the lack of snow so far this year. Quite unusual to be able to go hiking during the winter. How beautiful it is. We do have trail head's just down the street from the house so you must know about those. Great outdoors terrain. I look forward to hearing from you again soon. Thx, Tor

The house was just plain dirty!!! Cobwebs on the walls, mold in both of the bathrooms, and the kitchen floor did not look like it had been mopped in ages. There was only one roll of TP per bathroom. This may not be the fault of the owner but more the cleaners. The cabin is dated. Lighting was poor with burned out lights. Linoleum was peeling in kitchen and downstairs bath and both showers had mold. My wife actually had the scrub out the showers. Window coverings were poor and falling apart. The dishes were dirty and half the glasses were so old they didn't even hold water. The house served its purpose and is cheaper than most.
Owner response:Very weird review. First time in 8 years I have ever heard these issues. 99% of my guests love the place and no one has claimed these issues. Cobwebs are normal in Tahoe and they reappear a couple days of being cleaned. "Out dated", no it's purposely rustic but nice. In fact we just put up a bunch on brand new wall coverings 6 mo ago. No mold, none. Don't know what you saw but the place is kept clean and nice. It is not the Hyatt Hotel and you didn't pay $1000/night either. You just can't please everyone all the time.......good luck. Tor

As the Team Leader for a crew of 11 that spent time in this cabin during the month of Novmeber, I can confidently say that the team enjoyed the cabin immensely. We really enjoyed the surrounding area firstly. It was close to Truckee, however far enough away to allow privacy to take in the beauty of the mountainous views. We also enjoyed the home away from home feeling with the large table big enough for all 11 of us, the fire place, the television, spacious kitchen, and quaint decorations. The bedrooms were perfect, large and very comfortable. The space was a perfect fit for 11 people, so I would imagine it could only be more comfortable with a more traditionally sized family. Thank you for your hospitality!

Cabin is located in a very quiet vacation home development close to Truckee + VERY REASONABLY PRICED. We spend two weeks every other year hiking in the US West and have rented several houses and cabins normally for 2 - 4 night stays. We spent 2 nights at this large cabin mid-Sept and were very comfortable hiking during the days and sleeping soundly at night. Kitchen was well stocked with everything needed to cook and prepare meals. Internet worked perfectly and there was a large dining table to spread out our trial maps and local brochures. Truckee (nearby - down the hill from cabin) is a friendly town for hikers, lots of small restaurants, we found everything we needed. Nice deck out back for relaxing. We enjoyed our stay and when we return to Truckee we will definitely stay here again. Perfect for skiers also it would seem.

We had 3 generations in our group- and the house was large enough to comfortably hold all of us! The elders used the downstairs bedroom and bathroom and they were very content with that. The young people had the upstairs and had their privacy and "space" from the adults. We also had 4 dogs with us and we had no problem having them outside on the deck both day and night. We had 4 cars and there was plenty of room for them and bikes, rafts , gear etc... We are a large and active family and it was a great house for us to rent-there was enough room and the house is very convenient to everything ( Donner Lake ,Lake Tahoe, Truckee River etc..) We had a very enjoyable time -Thank you very much Tor!

After years of renting from a friend, we were hesitant renting from a stranger, but Tor was friendly, quick to answer questions, easy to get in touch with, his info is clear and concise. The house is comfortable and clean, just our size and style: felt like a home. It was fun to explore a new neighborhood of T-D, too: close to different T-D trails. The location of the house is convenient to town, not too far into T-D, which we also liked especially coming back from a long day hiking, tired and dirty and hungry. We love that the house is dog-friendly because our dogs are our "daughters" and enjoy hiking, too. We decided to go to Truckee this summer to "familiar and safe" instead of being newsworthy folks being washed down the Merced River or being somewhere we didn't feel safe to hike. We are glad to have discovered Tor so we can rent from him again in the future and recommend this house to our friends. We love coming to Truckee, and this particular week in July 2011 we put in about 70 miles of day hiking, coming back each evening to settle in comfortably at the McLean House.

This was our first time staying at the McLean cabin, and it was a great experience. The cabin is great and Tor is excellent with communication and answering any questions you may have. Its nice to find a pet friendly cabin in such a pretty place.
Owner response:Hi Jason, Thanks for the great review. I must say, you were so easy to work with too. You called me, I gave you a quote, you accepted, I sent you the rental agreement and you returned it as I requested and on time. Then you took good care of my house and left it in fine shape. I thank you. Sometimes people try and make it so much more difficult than it should be. Thanks for being a stand up guy. Nice to deal with. You are welcome back anytime. Tor

Lots of hidden costs. OK cabin, but a little tacky. Negotiated an extra two days for the weekend, but after they confirmed they received a better offer and cancelled our reservation and we moved out early. Read the contract very carefully for all the additional charges. Not a great experience and we won't be back.
Owner response:Dear renter, I am not surprised at your poor review. You told me I could trust you, then you lied to me and didn't hold up your end of the deal. Shame on you for your lack of integrity. You two were the worst experience I've had in 8 years. I did not extend your stay as I was very concerned for the protection of my house. When you take advantage and lie to people you lose their trust and I will never give you another chance to do that to me. You did not go by our agreement and abused my trust in you. My cleaners were horrified when they found the mess you left for them. Total lack of respect of one's property. In particular, you dumped soup into the pastic garbage can without using a plastic liner. That was just disrespectful. What a mess for the maids. The maids also reported you left the entire house a mess and especially the kitchen and refridgerator which took an extra hour to clean up. They wern't happy with you either. Good riddens!

Our family rented the McClean cabin and were so thankful for the great rate. We stayed as a single family and it was literally the most affordable place on VRBO. This was the first time we had rented a home vs. staying in a hotel. With an 11 year old and 22 year old, and everyone on different sleeping and eating schedules, the convenience of separate bedrooms and food there at the house made it a great fit for our family. Our only little bad boo boo, if you will, was bringing poorly fitted bed sheets that kept slipping off the plastic mattress pad in the downstairs bedroom. So if you rent there keep that in mind if you bring your own linen. Tor was kind to work with and we apppreciated him treating us like guests, not renters. Carol

We just got back from our stay in this cabin and we are very pleased. The house was in a nice area, easy to find and had enough room for our large group of 20. It was clean in and out, the kitchen was fully stocked, the beds were comfy, and the fireplace was the cherry on top. The owner was quick to respond and was very friendly. The house was when we walked in was clean and spacious. My group of 13 had a blast staying there. If people are willing to double up on queen size bunks then this place is the place to go. The kitchen had utensils, dishes, and cookware to provide cooked meals. Occasionally the heated water would run out after a couple of hours but I think that is from us taking showers all relatively at the same time. Communication with Tor was exceptional and straightforward and had no problems with contacting him. The only concern for this house is the driveway and if you do not have a SUV that is a 4x4 or all wheel drive, prepare to bring chains or shovel the ice from the driveway. Tor did state that we should back our cars into the driveway and we did with snowchains but it still got stuck. I have nothing but good words to say for this cabin and I agree all the other 5 star reviews for this cabin. If I had another chance to go to tahoe I would definitely want to stay in this cabin.
Owner response:Hi Jonathan, Thanks for the great review. I thought I'd address the icey driveway issue. This is a common situation in snow country when we've had a lot of snow fall then the sun comes out. It melts somewhat then freezes at night. Hense the ice. I always tell people 4WD is the first choice then chains but you must have one or the other. Thanks again for your review and hope to hear from you again. Tor

We had a wonderful ski vacation while staying at the "Best Bang for your Buck" . The cabin was exactly as described. Very clean and the fireplace was so nice to cozy up around. Our 2 daughters, ages 13 and 9, loved playing and exploring in the backyard. The ski resorts were so close by, it was nice to not have to get up at the "crack of dawn" to get there. It made for a perfect "get away". We were able to relax and play in a very comfortable atmosphere. We will definitely be back!! Thanks Tor! Heidi

We came up to the cabin just in time for (from what I have heard) the worst snow storm in 10 years! It was a good thing that the cabin warms up quickly! The cabin has a great combination of spaciousness yet a cozy feeling. The pictures and reports are very accurate but the beauty of the environment covered with snow is indescribable. The owner keeps a clean and well-maintained property. He is easily accessible, friendly, and helpful. He also provides information regarding outside opportunities in the area. This was our first time renting the Little Brother cabin, but I look forward to returning next year! I would definitely recommend this cabin to others (but not during the week we want to stay!) It truly was a wonderful experience!
Owner response:Karen, What can I say..........you obvioulsy are coming back and that's great! I'm so glad you enjoyed your vacation at my "little brother" house. I hope you ventured out to experience all the private ammenities too. Hot tubs, sauna, swimming pool and the resteraunts. See you soon. PS: If ever you have a large group or just want a big place, please check out "big brother" too!

We were there Dec 18-24th. The place was a little small but cute & comfy. Dining table is huge. Our kids had a blast sleding down from the driveway to the backyard. The driveway is steep, and seems steeper with 4 feet of snow on it. We were caught in the storm that came down overnitet & the snow plow didn't come to clear the driveway, even after we called (3x). So prepare to use the shovel on the property to dig your car out. Mud room (hallway) was a tad small especially when you have 3 little kids wanting to come in from the snow & taking their boots & jackets to hang up (filled w/ snow). Bring extra paper towel or rags to wipe snow (water) on kitchen floor. Carpet is a light color so be careful not to spill food or color drinks. We were always nervous when they had drinks in their hands, even if they were careful. Love the fireplace (stove). It was very cozy & warm & great place to dry wet socks & boots. You have to visit Pizza on the Hill..best pizza. Loaded w/ toppings for $16. Thin crust. Overall, we enjoy the home & would rent again. Tor, owner, was very responsive when we called or emailed. Nice & funny guy. Easy to work w/. Got our full security deposit w/in 4 business days. Thanks Tor!
Owner response:Had a Blast!........Hmmm, You know there's a punishment for only giving me a 4 star rating. I will have to charge you extra next time. Just kidding. Don't forget I do have a larger, twice the size house, available too. Maybe next time you'll try that one. Regarding the snow removal service, keep in mind you were there when we had the greatest amount of snowfall in the past 10 years. Those guys do the best they can but if it's dumping then it will build up. I agree Pizza on the Hill a mile away is great as is the formal dining at Trout Creek Lodge & the lounge there too. Also the hot tubs, heated pool and snow tubing there too, not to mention our own little ski resort, perfect for beginners and low priced. So close you can go home for lunch and take a nap. Then in the summer we have Donner Lake with our own private beach with a boat launch & boat rentals available, plus a snack bar. Plus horseback riding. It's a great year round wonderland! Thanks for your review!

This cabin is just that, a cabin. It's comfy and cozy, in a great quiet location. If you're there during warm weather, the deck is great for relaxing and listening to the wind in the trees. There is a trailhead down the road that will lead you to a series of trails for a great hike. It's nice and close to Truckee and all the Tahoe ammenities. We didn't use the rec center so can't speak to that. The owner is helpful and fair with pricing. We've stayed there twice, and will likely rent it again.
Owner response:Hmmm, only 4 stars Naomi. I think I'm going to have to charge you extra next time until I receive a 5 star rating from you. Just kidding. BTW: You forgot to mention you've also rented my 4 bdrm nearby and you loved it! Tor

I would rent this place.Very good deal and the friendly owner reacts promptly on any email, or phone messages if you needhelp /info. Each bedroom has queen bunkbeds and there are 2 bathrooms . We stayed for five nights in July . The house is in the woods very quiet and you can sit outside on the deck and take a hike in the woods. I liked it that there were clear instructions for the house and that there was a washer dryer and dishwasher. Everyday we expolored another part of the area. Truckee has a really nice main street with historic stores and fashionable boutiques. We preferred it to all the other Lake Tahoe cities/places we saw which were more touristic. With the rent of the house come two guest passes for up to 8 people so that you have to pay less for the entrance of Northwoods , a sand beach 5 minutes from the house with platform in the lake and the availability to rent for a reasonable price all these great things: stand up paddel, hobie cats for sailing, kajaks etc. Donner lake water is also warmer than the Tahoe lake. Huge supermarket is near. Enjoy your stay! (don't forget to do the rafting 2 hour ride with water pistols in hand!)
Owner response:Another happy renter. They are from So.Cal. They appreciated the professional management of this house and it's surroundings. Owner

Our stay for a family reunion-vacation was complicated by extra charges per person, six pages of contract rules, fines, and penalities. Should've listened to my gut feeling and stayed far away from this complex and one-way contract. Never before have I had an owner drop by and count heads. Paid a large deposit for a dirty house, dishwasher full of stagnant water, half the light bulbs blown or missing. Extention cords everywhere, a messy electricial danger. After leaving the place cleaner than when we arrived, he charged us to clean the carpets. Recommend you stay far away from this and him. Your Buck gets Banged hard here. No one in our family will ever recommend this rental.
Owner response:This particular renter did not have much experience with renting houses or rental contracts in general. A renal agreement should have as many of the what if's as possible, yet still things do arise. The more you have in writting the less it leaves to chance of miscommunication resulting in bad feelings. I want my good renters to come back again & again so it behoves us both to understand each of our responsibilites. In this particular case they had been there for two weeks and the place according to my cleaners (my eyeballs), was filthy. So filthy infact that I had to arrange for carpet cleaners to come in inbetween renters because it was too embarassing to rent as it was left by his family. The complaints I have are minimal for a place that's been a big renter for 71/2 yrs. with several hundred renters. Many are repeat year after year. 99% of the happy ones don't take the time to send a review because it's what they had expected, a nice clean place with professional management. Owner

I can't say enough great things about Tor's cabin! We are a family of three and so far its our favorite place at Donner - and we've tried quite a few places. We love is how open it is - its not cluttered with cutsey decorations. Its very quiet there and you really get away from the hustle/bustle, but everything fun is really close (Reno or Lake Tahoe). There's lots to do around there or you can just hang out at the cabin. This might sound funny, but one of the things I love is the keyless entry. Its a hassle to carry other people's keys and have to keep track of them! We went with friends over July 4th this year - and it was wonderful! They were a family of four so we gave them the downstairs bed & bath and we took the upstairs. We had a great time, there was room for everyone to group together or spread out. I was a little hesitant to rent from a private owner at first because I'd always used an agency but Tor has been great to work with and we have always felt we got our money's worth. In fact, we are already looking forward to the next time we can get away!!

Another enjoyable 4 day weekend at Little Brother! It was May in the mountains and we had a full range of weather! We arrived to sunny skies and cool breezes, and left four days later to full on snow! Take the owner's advice (on arrival/departure info) - 4 wheel drive or chains, no less. I love the three couches arranged around the gas (no mess no hassle!) fireplace... a couch for each of us! I only found one other property with as reasonable a rate and since I was booking last minute, the owner could not get the keys to me on time. Not a problem at this cabin!! Having WIFI was wonderful, we just brought the laptop and my husband was able to finish up the hiring process for a new job right over the internet. The location is great, the cabin is super comfy, you are close to everything. We loved our time there and can't wait to go back!! Even our chocolate lab had a wonderful time... her first trip to Truckee.

We stayed at this house, the house itself was pretty reasonable, until we got the bill and saw the owner tacked on all sorts of random charges. Best bang for you buck? yeah right! Unless you like surprises on a bill, I wouldn't recommend it and will NEVER stay here again!!!
Owner response:Dear "Disappointed Girl", You receved a contract prior to booking "Best Bang for the Buck" and reviewed all charges before signing. Therefore there were no "surprises' or "random charges" as you suggest. The base rate and any extras are quoted in advance and you reviewed them and had the option of not booking my place if you felt that the price did not suit you. I have a great rental history with much repeat business of satisfied renters who love my great low prices. Owner

We loved this cabin when we stayed in Fall 2008! We had stayed down around the Donner Lake for years but decided to try Tahoe Donner and found this one. We were amazed at the value for the money spent... its everything & more than the description & pictures. Easy to get to town but we still felt secluded and away from the daily grind. It was very comfortable & clean and the queen bunks are so cool. We went with a friend and she got the downstairs bath & bedroom and we took the upstairs two bedrooms with the bath in between. Great set up for asinlge or couple and a family with 1 or 2 kids. We ended up taking our 2008 Christmas card photo on the back deck. You won't regret staying here!!
