Shadow Run Cottage is a magical, enchanting mountain retreat nestled at 3000 feet on one and a half acres of lushly wooded land on the slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain. The cottage is approximately four miles off of Chimney Rock Road, and is equidistant to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure twenty minutes to the northeast and the quaint city of Hendersonville to the southwest. Your journey begins once you turn off of Chimney Rock road and begin to ascend up into the mountains and the scenery gets better as you go. Travelers wind through vast, rolling apple orchards, past small family farms and deep forests, all the while seeing the sheer granite cliffs that cling to the mountainsides. For three seasons the roadsides are blanketed in an amazing profusion of wildflowers. Shadow Run Cottage lies near the end of a dead end road so traffic is virtually nonexistent, and the surrounding forests wrap the area in quiet serenity. Wildlife is abundant here, and one might spot a black bear, bobcat, coyote, raccoon, deer or wild turkey. Hummingbirds are frequent and delightful visitors to our Honeysuckle vines!

For nature lovers and outdoors activists, Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure are the nearest outdoor venues. Here one can enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, boat and kayak rentals, rock climbing wildlife observation and fishing. The region boasts two vast National Forests, the Pisgah and the Nantahal National forests which are an outdoor enthusiasts paradise with hundreds of miles of wood paths, mountain trails and dramatic cascading mountain streams to explore. The cottage is about 90 minutes to Mt Mitchell State Park, home to the highest mountain east of the Mississippi, the park's namesake, Mt. Mitchell. The Great Smokey Mountains are also about 90 minutes to the west, but no matter where you are, there is a never ending menu of things to enjoy.

For those looking for more civilized recreation, there is also an abundance of shopping, dining, and sightseeing in nearby Hendersonville or Asheville. Hendersonville is twenty minutes away, and the city is a participant in the Historical Main Street program which has enabled the city to retain its small town flavor, architecture and charm. Visitors will find fun boutiques, shops, art galleries, antique dealers, ice cream parlors, and dining choices that range from sandwich shops to Haute Cuisine. Throughout the summer months, there are cultural events, including live outdoor concerts on Monday and Friday evenings. Another twenty minutes gets you to Asheville, the largest city in the region. This vibrant and eclectic city offers a tremendous variety to shop, dine, and see the sights. Asheville has the highest concentration of art deco buildings in the east, as well as being the home of the famous Vanderbilt mansion and grounds, the Biltmore Estate. There are also two areas that exemplify architecture of the Arts and Crafts period, the Grove Park Inn and the historic Montford District. Both are worth a visit as the homes and the Inn both offer a snapshot of the genteel past in Asheville.

Shadow Run Cottage is a three year old home that has been designed as a vacation getaway. All modern conveniences have been provided, and we have supplied everything needed to have a stress free and relaxing stay. We purchased the cottage in May, 2009, and have fully furnished it with all new items to ensure our guests are comfortable during their stay. The upstairs contains a bright, clean, and modern kitchen, an intimate dining nook, a light and airy living room with vaulted ceiling, TV, and stereo system, a large full bath, and the master bedroom. The bedroom features a very large walk-in closet, a wrought iron queen size bed, hardwood floors, ceiling fan, and a built in ironing board with iron. Best of all, there is a French door that opens directly onto the large and private upstairs deck. This is a great spot to sit in our wooden rocking chairs with a mug of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. After the sun goes down on clear nights this is an ideal spot to gaze in wonder at the star studded sky, as there is virtually no light pollution here! The downstairs consists of a large and bright recreation room and sleeping area. There is a leather sofa to lounge on in front of the TV, a brand new full size sleeper sofa, as well as a separate twin day bed. We have stocked the shelves with an array of books, nature guides, outdoor adventure books, art books and games such as monopoly, chess, checkers and dominoes as well. So kids will find this a great place to stay and will love the downstairs. There is a powder room off the rec room with stacked washer and dryer. The room also opens directly onto a large enclosed sunroom, which is another great spot to sit and relax at the bistro table overlooking the woods that slope away from the cottage. This in turn opens to a large back deck which offers a shady spot to enjoy the outdoors and a great spot to grill up a mountain feast!

Shadow Run Cottage is the perfect antidote to all those modern day stresses and strains. From the moment that you first arrive you will begin to feel any burdens and anxieties quickly melt away to be replaced by feelings of serenity and wonder! This magical spot, with its clean cool air, is scented by the sweet perfume of wildflowers and the earthy scents of the high mountain forests. Birds will serenade you in the early morning and once again when dusk arrives. Summer thunderstorms boil up and burst on the mountains, then quickly blow away and the sun returns to dry the clean and cooler air. Nightfall brings cool mountain breezes and one might never use the air conditioner then. Rather, throw open the windows and the French doors, snuggle into our comfy beds, and fall into a deep sleep serenaded by the cool mountain air and the soothing breezes rustling through the trees.

Shadow Run Cottage a Magical Mountain Retreat

Year Purchased: 2009

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage

Shadow Run Cottage is in a fantastic location relative to the resorts of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure as well as being within a short drive to the city of Hendersonville which is just the right size and has the right mix of shopping, dining, and recreation. Even though the cottage is so close to these three draws, it is located four miles up a series of beautiful winding roads at an elevation of 3000 feet on the quiet secluded slopes of Sugarloaf mountain. We find that we can spend the day out exploring, shopping, dining, hiking, and so on then return to the solitude and relaxation of the cottage and enjoy the feeling of being secluded and private. The area has not been overdeveloped and retains it's natural flora and fauna. There are two large decks, which make guests think of being in a treehouse, especially the second floor deck which opens off of the master bedroom via a French door. In the evening, one can sleep with the door open and be lulled to sleep by the cool refreshing mountain air while listening to the wind rustle through the woods. This is a great spot to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening in our two wooden rocking chairs. After the sunsets, there is a profusion of stars to gaze at on clear nights.

Owner's Map of Hendersonville

My wife and I are outdoor types and we truly appreciate the beauty of nature and the great outdoors. Now that we are "empty nesters" we are planning to relocate in the coming years to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina so we can take advantage of all that the area offers, namely spectacular natural beauty, significantly less development, friendly and engaging people, as well as the slower more relaxed pace of the area. We have three dogs, and enjoy getting them out on the trail with us as we explore lush wooded trails and forests. We also enjoy the culture of Asheville and Hendersonville and are drawn to the unique period architecture found in both cities. Another facet that appeals to us in the area is the large amount of small family farms and agriculture in this part of the state as one can always seem to find delicious fruits, vegetables, produce, as well as honey, eggs, etc...This allows us to buy locally when we are down staying at the cottage as well as to contribute to the ongoing success of the local farming economy.

    • Shadow Run is a beautiful home surrounded by beautiful trees, singing birds, and for convenience, new paved roads. The in interior is newly furnished and very comfortable. The choice of colors is really designer and the furniture is lovely. New linens and dishes add to the pleasure. Great kitchen and baths too! Everything is all good at Shadow Run. Well worth my time to stay and I WILL BE BACK.

    • We arrived late at night and were concerned about being lost on the mountain roads. However, Peter’s directions were perfect, and we easily arrived at the Shadow Run cottage. Filled with relief at a drive way large enough in which to turn around, (We had a BAD experience at another time and place), three adults and two mid-sized dogs tumbled tiredly out of the car. The fragrance of the blooming flowers that surrounded the driveway met us as we opened the lock box and went inside. Our first impression was of freshness and cleanliness. A large family room, with sofas and a daybed, a half bath and a glassed-in porch were on the left, and a stairway was before us. At the top of the stairs, a cute little kitchen, sitting room and bedroom awaited us. All was neat, clean and comfortable. Decorative touches added a feeling of home, and the pride of the owners was reflected in the furnishings. Out the bedroom door was a fabulous deck, with Cracker Barrel rockers in which to sit and admire the view. Trees and bushes surrounded the location and crickets chirped in the moonlight. This was a peaceful place – one in which to relax and enjoy silence and nature. The next morning, as I watched a giant swallowtail sip her breakfast in the backyard, three big, beautiful does majestically walked up the back drive. They were obviously at home, and I was the intruder. Sadly, I startled them, and they moved into the woods. They did not return again during our stay. Our trip to Hendersonville and to Shadow Run was enjoyable. We had a great time wandering the back roads, and walking the dogs on the trails suggested by Peter. Returning to the cottage in the late afternoon, we would attempt to read, only to soon be napping on the sofas, lulled to sleep by the silence that surrounded us. In the evenings, we rocked on the deck and listened to the sounds of nature. The three days went too quickly, and we had to leave. However, we took pleasant memories and rejuvenated spirits with us when we left this cute little cottage in the woods.

    • My husband & I stayed at Shadow Run Cottage for a week. We found the cottage clean, well stocked and close to Hendersonville, Lake Lure and Asheville with major highways close by. The cottage was secluded but on a well maintained road. The area was quiet and peaceful. The deck had lovely views and nice rockers to relax in. We enjoyed our stay there.

      Homeowner Response:
We are very happy to see that our first guests at the cottage had a nice stay and that they found the cottage and its ammenities to have met their needs! Thanks very much! Pete & Marcy Jackson.
