We were in the Auburn area for a 6 month reunion of our Golden Retriever's siblings. We were able to bring our puppy who enjoyed her stay as much as we did--although her focus was more on the family dogs, chickens and two pigs! We loved both the cottage and the surroundings! Bob and his family couldn't have been nicer. There is not much that hasn't already been said,but we want to add that the cottage is just as nice as the descriptions we read from 2009. We highly recommend staying here.

Everything you have read in the previous reviews about this property is true so there isn't anything new that I can add. Although what made our stay work is the fact that even though my wife and I got brutally sick for 48 hours during our stay we still made it work. We can't imagine how much harder it would have been had we been in a nondescript hotel or motel room somewhere else. To have a washer & dryer available, a couch by the fireplace, our own kitchen, and a friendly environment made our stay much more tolerable. Will we be back? You bet!

Great hospitality and a beautiful rental

From the start Bob and Jeanne were welcoming and accommodating. After a long drive we were arriving in the evening and the cottage was ready for us and Bob gave us a tour. Towards the end of our stay my wife took sick and we were able to extend our stay a night without any hassle (luckily there wasn't a guest following right after too). The cottage itself is just as the pictures show. Built with great materials, equipped with everything you'd need and comfortable so that we were able to just relax. Exactly what we were looking for. We used the hot tub and bar-b-que on the main level one night, which was very convenient. The washer & dryer in the unit was also fabulous and we made good use of it. We made some short trips around Auburn to visit the small historic downtown area and caught a weekly farmer's market, sampled at one of the local wineries and did some hiking down on the North Fork of the American river. We had a very tasty New Year's dinner at Monkey Cat in Auburn as well. To top it off their lovely daughter took our 3 y.o. daughter (and us) to pet their pigs and chickens several times during our stay which was probably the highlight of her (our) stay. We definitely plan to return, perhaps in the summer to try out the beautiful pool.

Luxurious and Relaxing Retreat

Our family feels fortunate to have discovered The Cottage Pool House and have enjoyed two separate weekends there over the summer. Bob and Jeanne are gracious and generous hosts, and they have thought of every detail to make the stay luxurious and relaxing! Our kids had a great time swimming, visiting the chickens and pigs, and playing ping-pong and volleyball. My husband and I enjoyed relaxing in the sun with a glass of local wine and evening soaks in the spa gazing at the stars. We are already planning our next stay -highly recommended!

My holiday staying here as a guest of Bob and Jeanne was wonderful. I loved this place so much! The description is 100%, the location is a perfect get away from the hustle and bustle that is so easily accessible if you want it. I wanted a place to stay with peace, quiet and a swim every morning, and that's what I got with so much more! The Pool House is stunning, the design, layout and fittings are superb, so much better than staying in a hotel - AND - you get to see the dogs, pigs, chickens, wild turkeys and humming birds too. Bob and Jeanne made me very comfortble, the house has all the equipment that you need for a lovely holiday, the pool and amenities are beautifully crafted and exceptionally well cared for. My family and friends were made very welcome when they visited, and we all enjoyed the pool, hot tub and table tennis. If you have any questions Bob is only too happy to help. I would highly recommend this property to anyone visiting the area, if I could keep it a secret and for myself then I would but that would be a real shame - go and see for yourself. Thanks to Bob, Jeanne, the children and the animals - I had a wonderful holiday.

A very peaceful setting

My wife and I stayed here while our own home was being rented. We must agree with other reviewers that the property is even nicer than the pictures. It is a very peaceful setting with long views over the surrounding fields. The grounds are very well maintained with a variety of interesting plants & flowers. The pool house itself is well constructed with high quality components and amenities throughout. Best of all, Bob is a great, friendly host - we hope to stay here again soon.

Anniversary Getaway

My husband and I rented the poolhouse for our 4th anniversary--a much-needed getaway from all responsibility! The poolhouse provided that for us in spades! You know how sometimes the pictures on sites like these are old or taken in such a way to make things seem bigger or nicer? Not so with this rental. It was even more beautiful in person than in the photos. It's obvious Bob and Jeanne take great care with the property (unlike others I've been to where the 'vacation' property gets the cast-off/hand-me-down furniture); everything in the poolhouse is appointed for the comfort of the guests. My favorite, which you can't see in the pictures, was the shower. There were two shower heads, both pointing into the same corner (so not just a long stall with heads at opposing ends), and dark travertine tiles that gave one the impression of entering a modern cave. I'm trying to figure out how to redo my bathroom at home to make something similar! When we arrived, Bob was there to greet us, and show us the property and amenities. Not only did we have the poolhouse, but we had access to the grill, the smoker, the fire pit, the volleyball court, the pool, the spa, the garden (we were offered to pick through for fresh vegetables). The pool and spa were controlled by an iPhone, so we could set the spa temperature while upstairs, wait for the phone to tell us when it was hot, and only then head downstairs. Bob even offered for us to invite our kids up to play in the pool during the day (we had to make ourselves not take him up on that, because this was a trip for just the two of us, but it was tempting!!). Our only problem came with the kitchen windows, which were uncovered and positioned opposite the TV. When we brought it up with Bob and Jeanne, they not only covered the window for us with butcher block paper, but offered us the option of moving to an apartment over the garage that had the ability to be made much darker (we got to tour that space, and it was just as beautiful as the poolhouse, but without the uber-shower, so we stayed put). My husband and I will definitely be returning...we've talked about renting it for a weekend, just so this time we could bring the kids!

My daughter and I stayed here back in June. Robert and Jeanne were just absolutely wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome! Their children were very great as well, seeing that my little one had as much fun as possible with the animals and gardens! We also bbq'd with the family on our last night there and sure did put the cooker and outside fireplace to work! The pools, scenery, accomodations, amenities are much more than the pictures show. This place is a definite must with plenty of attractiosn near by! Enjoy!

The Perfect Retreat

The Wife and I both needed to work on our business strategy for the year, so we headed to the country, to Auburn, California to the most luxurious and well-appointed vacation home we've stumbled upon. The owners, Jeanne and Bob, provided everything we desired: a variety of pleasant work spaces, inspiring surroundings, and a relaxing environment--truly paradise for these two city mice. Design and style-wise, much thought and effort have perfected this gorgeous place. We worked, yes, but we also reclined a lot and luxuriated in sumptuous details: arrival wine, exquisite flower arrangements, a gloriously comfortable bed, and a vast garden in full bloom. We spent work breaks in the pool or the hot tub or playing chaotic games of ping pong. And the birds! They entertained and serenaded us through several very serious meetings and brainstorming sessions. What an unexpected delight! The kitchen appliances and equipment made cooking a joy. The two fireplaces made lousy weather a non-issue. Bob and Jeanne have achieved that perfect balance of of presence and privacy--something many vacation rental owners foul up. We felt we had access if there were questions and we felt we had the privacy we needed to relax.

Based on all the prior reviews we decided to stay here and we weren't disappointed. The property does Auburn well, it's a beautiful place to stay and relax or explore the Auburn area. The surroundings are gorgeous, quite and peaceful. The pool cottage was so comfortable and had everything we would ever need. They thought of everything. Bob and Jeannie were very nice, helpful and knowledgeable about getting around Auburn. We loved meeting their 3 Collies. Thanks for a wonderful weekend and we look forward to returning.

Felt like Italy!

I was fortunate enough to find this fantastic home while visiting VBRO. We honestly felt like we were in the Italian countryside. The "Pool House" was spared no expense when decorating; the kitchen is gorgeous and functional, the bathroom is very large and beautifully tiled with a two-head large shower and the bedroom is heavenly with the most comfortable bed ever! We had quite a show from the pheasants on the property,...it was mating season. Our hosts Jeannie and Bob are wonderful and very hospitable...loaning me a bathing suit for the spa and loaning me a large pot in which to boil our lobsters. A very romantic setting and a beautiful place to spend the weekend. Thank you for your good taste in everything, Jeannie and Bob! Lynn and Harry

The Ultimate Luxurious Treehouse

This was one of the best places I have stayed. The attention to details and the graciousness of our hosts made the entire experience simply delightful. I loved the feel of the open air, with windows and doors that opened wide to let the breeze through. The place was perfectly suited for a few nights of elegance in peaceful and quiet surroundings. The elegant spa was fantastic, with great jets that felt like a shiatsu massage kneading my back, and super comfy robes to wrap in when we got out. The pool is nice and big, with a deep end with diving board and waterfalls and enticing places for lounging all around. Even though we were only able to stay two nights, we came home feeling as relaxed as if we had experienced a long vacation away.

I've stayed at various B&B's and VRBO rentals, but this is the best experience so far. We decided to go to Auburn since my kids are not into skiing, but want to play in the snow. We thought we don't have to deal with crowd in Tahoe area by staying here. First of all, we achieve that, mostly by staying at pool house, I think. The pictures on the web sites are nice, but even better in person. What's more amazing is how wonderful Bob and Jeanne are. They are such great hosts that I decided to leave a review, after all. In one sentence, I'll put it this way. Expect the best - you will still be surprised~

They had great communication allowing us just a little more time to prepare the cottage between guests. We try to make everything as perfect as we can. 2 boys' mommy (oakland) were wonderful guests. I don't know why, but we seem to get the best guests. 2 boys' mommy (oakland) were so nice and I loved seeing the smiles on the two boys. They were darling. I am sure that 2 boys' mommy (oakland) is very proud of those boys. We offered some just cut greens out of the Winter garden. One of the boys knew the name of the vegatables and knew that he liked kale. The cottage was left extgraordinarily clean, which helps us because we do the house work ourselves. I just want to say thank you for coming, and I am glad you had a nice stay. Thank you for the review.

luxurious find

Wow, now this is a dream get away. You could run away from home with nothing and be completely comfortable. The hosts clearly like the best from the shampoo and wine to the linens and have shared it with their guests. They thought of everything one might need. This would be an amazing find for a safe respite, a honeymoon or a family get together if you rented the carriage house too. It was roomy enough to host a party and I did. There was plenty of everything. All my guests loved it and wanted to return. Besides the roominess of the pool house you have access to all of the grounds, out door fireplace, pool, barbecues and smokers, hot tub, ping pong. The views slowed my heart jmrate. I felt like I was in a glass tree house. Yet, if I wanted privacy, I could close the blinds, light the fire and retreat. I stayed in the carriage loft too and would recommend them both without hesitation

We were looking for a special place to celebrate a special occasion and we certainly found it at the Auburn Cottage Pool House. From the clear communication and ease of making the reservation, the professionalism of the owners, to the beauty of the grounds, to the fabulous surroundings, to the obvious love and attention to detail that went into the cottage, we couldn't have asked for a nicer get-away. Truly a romantic spot for couples or enjoyable for small families. The spa and outdoor fireplace were wonderful! Our hosts provided little touches, including a lovely bottle of wine, to make the time even more special. Another stay at the Pool House will be in our future! The only challenge was finding the driveway and we didn't realize that the kitchen didn't have an oven, but these were minor issues that did nothing to take away from the wonderful experience. Thank you!

With our busy schedules it is very important that when we do take the time to do something special that it is a wonderful experience. The county will only let us have a microwave convection oven which will not do certain things, but we are opening up the "carraigeloft" that does have a commercial-style Jennair range. I rented the Cottage Pool House for several partial-weeks-in-a-row this Fall while I attended a nearby garden design school. My mom came with me to watch my two year old while I was in class. They had fabulous days visiting with the friendly collies, horses, chickens and piglets that my daughter never wanted to leave. The pool house itself was perfect. Beautifully decorated and really, really well thought out. Bob and Jeanne and their son Walter couldn't have been nicer or more considerate. We looked forward to the great bottle of wine upon our arrival every Sunday and all the fancy soaps and details. The bed and linens were so comfortable that I'm now buying the same bed for my home with the exact same sheets. You should have seen my daughter's face light up when she was plunked down on the fluffy pillows. She just loved it. Everything we needed was there including great toys and kids books in the drawers. The kitchen worked really nicely for us and the living room was a great size. I could spread out and do my drafting homework and there was still room for my mom and daughter to hang out. The view from the bedroom window at sunset was something else. The fans over head, lovely. My husband, who had to stay home and work, got down-right tired of hearing about how nice it was up there when we'd come home between weeks! I'd recommend to anyone - and have. Stay there if you have any reason at all to be in the Auburn area. Great place.

L & M & Our Happy Dog

We stayed for two nights in mid-September. The cottage is by far the nicest place we have rented in the Bay Area. It is decorated in a Ralph Lauren/Pottery Barn/Ethan Allen style and every possible need seems to have been considered. The cottage was spotlessly clean. The pool, surrounding grounds, and distant pastures are lovely. I waited awhile to write my review because I wanted to see if my opinion would change after leaving. Not a chance. I adore the cottage and wish I lived there. We are plotting our return and our dog still cherishes his swim across your pool. Thank you for sharing your bucolic paradise with us.

Our stay at the cottage

Found the property easily and was very close to several interesting activities and dining. The photos shown could never reflect the overall effect of how beautiful this place was, but they are well done. The property was exceptionally clean and exceded our expectations. Bob and Jeanne were extremely gracious and very personable people as was their family. We would highly recommend this property as it was very pleasureable and relaxing trip for us. It was by far the best VRBO we have ever stayed in. We have plans to return soon. Our favorite resturant was Bootlegers. Thanks again to the Vaughan family for their warm welcome.

We stayed last weekend at this property and couldn't have been more pleased..it was perfect--secluded peaceful,romantic,exceptionally furnished and close to all sorts of great restaurants, wineries, towns and shops as well as all varieties of outdoor activities. The owners are very accommodating, helpful and accessible for any info or needs. The pool and spa are as pretty as the pictures and are programed for your desired temperatures,,,we used the facilities every night looking up at the stars, just gorgeous and hard to leave--we wanted to live there:)!! We certainly would recommend this rental to everyone--we will definitely return when we can.

Excellence in Auburn!

My wife, dog and I were in town for a wedding in Foresthill. The stay at the pool house was excellent! The condo/pool house is perfect for a get-away; everything is new, beautiful, and comfortable. There is a huge dog run for our much loved pet. The pool and hot tub were thoroughly enjoyed. The overall experience was top-notch. The web-site accurately described the place, the pictures were an accurate representation, and the owners were very friendly. We hope to be a return guest!

Just Perfect

I was a guest for 5 days in early August 2010. I was looking for comfort, relaxation, quality pool time while house hunting in the local area and vacationing as well: I found everything here!! The pool house was beautiful and luxurious, sparkling clean, perfectly decorated and the pool and grounds were spectacular. All features were as described or better. It was welcoming, great to be there, hard to leave. Amazing! Bob and Jeanne are very gracious hosts and could not be more polite or interesting. I really had an excellent time and would highly recommend the Auburn Cottage Pool House. I hope to visit again very soon.

Ah, serenity!

We rented this beautiful pool house for 2 days in July to go on a rafting trip (with All Outdoors - another GREAT find!). We had high expectations given the reviews and photos, and the experience was even better than anticipated! The pool house is much roomier than expected and perfect in every way. It was sparkling clean, had air conditioning, a pool and spa right outside the door - even ping pong and volleyball! I have never slept in a more comfortable bed (wow - that is a plush bed!), and I just about fell in love with the shower. This place is heaven on earth, right down to the very high end shampoo and soap they provide! Honestly, I can't recommend any lodging more highly. We plan to return for sure! Thanks for a truly wonderful experience, Bob and Jeanne!

The pool is fantastic and the gardens surrounding the home add color and atmosphere. There were fresh flower in every room upon arrival. The hosts were not hovering, but available for advice and requests. I would stay here again in a heart beat.

THIS IS EXEMPLARY OF GOING BEYOND EXPECTATION. COMMENTS FROM FRIENDS VISITING US WHILE AT THE COTTAGE INCLUDED REMARKS SUCH AS "WHEN CAN I MOVE IN", "THIS PLACE IS FANTASTIC AND IS DEFINITELY A 5-STAR RESIDENCE", AND "HOW DID YOU FIND SUCH A GREAT PLACE"? JEANNE AND BOB HAVE DONE A MAGNIFICENT JOB IN EVERY DETAIL OF THIS COTTAGE POOL HOUSE, AND WE CANNOT RAVE ENOUGH ABOUT IT. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT AND WILL DEFINITELY RETURN ON OUR NEXT VISIT TO CALIFORNIA.

Easter in Auburn

We spent a relaxing Easter weekend at the Cottage Pool house and were delighted with our experience. The pool house is cozy, comfortable and extremely stylish and well appointed. Sitting in the steaming hot tub in the rain was lovely! Bob and Jeanne provided everything we needed and it was great to explore Gold Country and learn more about this beautiful area. We hope to come back some day!

Could our place and our little town and local vineyards measure up to his standards? We were quite thrilled that they liked our place and the Gold Country. Jeanne and I have spent many wedding anniversaries at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa in Sonoma and have used some of their ideas when outfitting our place. We emphasize our landscaping, provide plush robes, and try to provide some extras for our valued guests. Karen and Andy were really a sweet couple, and we were blessed to have them.

This really is as good it gets. For anyone (especially a couple) wishing to explore and enjoy the great history of the California gold country, there is no better place to call your home away from home then the Vaughn's Cottage Pool House. It's a spectacular find. The place is immaculate, well furnished -- not with furnishings that one would expect to find in a rental unit -- but the well thought out care that goes into decorating a place for one's family and friends. It's truly a majestic cottage. From the hardwood floors to the granite counter tops to the double-headed two person walk-in shower to the luxurious bathrobes to the gorgeous fresh flowers throughout -- the Vaughns keep in mind every detail that makes a stay special. We were welcomed with a bottle of Mt. Vernon Zinfandel. And Jeannie also brought over fresh buttermilk and her own special pancake and waffle mix (with the fresh eggs). The gourmet kitchen with high end china and cooking utensils produced a sumptuous first morning's breakfast. My husband and I had a super time -- and the Vaughns are pet friendly. We brought our well- behaved black lab -- who enjoyed the expansive property. From waking up to flocks of geese to slipping for a soak in the hot tub to cuddling by the fireplaces -- there are two -- one in the cottage living room and one by the hot tub -- this is a great place. There is even a welcome book that lists top restaurants and things to do in the area. Robert Vaughn's recommendations for Grass Valley and Nevada city were spot-on. And the local French restaurant just down the street -- it doesn't look great from the outside, it's next to a bail's bondsman -- was the best meal we had on our trip -- and there are some really good restaurants up and down route 49. Thank you, thank you! Tom and I had a wonderful respite out of the City -- and we absolutely enjoyed the amazing friendliness of Auburn -- the Vaughns are very much a part of that refreshingly friendly and cordial community.

We were the first guests to stay in the pool cottage. We were so impressed by the detail and extra touches that are built into the rooms. The kitchen and bathroom are amazing. The bed is extremely comfortable and the linens are superb. The views from every room are incredible. We spent our days relaxing by the pool, walking on the trails, amnd having wine and appetizers on the deck. Even more enchanting than the amenities were the hosts. We were made to feel very special and enjoyed talking with them. They saw to it that every need was taken care of - hot tub was ready at night, cold drinks in the fridge, fresh vegetables from the garden. We enjoyed the beauty of the landscaping and rolling hills. Me and my girlfriend stayed there for nye and nyd and bob and jeanne were very nice. They gave us a free bottle of champange to toast the new years with. The property is very nice! Bed was extremly comfy as well as the couches! property has an amazing view of horses and farmland. And the jaccuzzi was just a great bonus to enjoy! My only complaint while, I was staying there is that there wasn't enough cooking utensils such as a large skillet or pot to boil pasta. And the satelite cable in the bedroom was not functioning properly one night. But Bob was very accomendating by giving us a prorated discount towards our next stay which, I though was really nice! Overall me and my girlfriend had an incredible time staying there and would recommend the property to friends and family!

My husband and I stayed 3 nights while visiting and we enjoyed everyday. This is great for a family as we barbecued and enjoyed the pool and spa. The Pool House is beauitful and every comfortable. Bob and Jeanne were very helpful. I highly reccommend if you want a getaway to the foothills.

Exceeded our expectations! We have stayed at more than a dozen VRBO properties over the years and this by far was the most beautiful accommodation. Bob and Jeanne have provided all the luxury you could find in a 5 star hotel and gone a step further by filling your fridge with beverages and breakfast fixings and your cupboard with snacks. Jeanne also left us wonderful tomatoes picked fresh from her garden. The property is gorgeous. The landscaping is beautiful and as mentioned in other comments the pool is HUGE. Not only do they have a dog run where we could have kept our dog Lucy if we left the property but since the property is fenced in Lucy had the run of the place. They even provided dog treats to make Lucy feel at home. This place is a must for people looking to enjoy what the area has to offer or to just relax like we did and never have to leave. Bob and Jeanne have created a tranquil, idyllic and most welcoming environment for their guests and we look forward to enjoying this property again.

Thank you Bob and Jeanne for such a wonderful experience! My stay was incredible. The pool house itself is amazing and the owners have sparred no expense - molding, two fireplaces, marble, granite, hardwood floors, dual showerheads - it’s absolutely gorgeous! The pool is one of the largest I’ve seen and is perfectly clear and the spa is wonderful especially at night. Bob and Jeanne were fantastic hosts and even had cold Diet Coke (my favorite drink) stocked in the refrigerator upon my arrival. The place was immaculate and was prepared like a high-end hotel room with every convenience. I travel frequently for both business and pleasure and it is rare to find a place so beautiful and hosts as thoughtful. I was also impressed with Auburn, which has plenty of activities including hiking trials, horseback riding, and wine tasting. I can’t wait to come back again!

My wife and kids and I have made multiple trips to Auburn to visit family over the years. We are always disappointed with the lack of nice accommodations in the area. Our problem has been solved. We went searching for vacation rentals and/or B&Bs in the area, and Voila. The outdoor area is wonderful: the pool is larger than life, while the hot-tub is nestled close to the bungalow and patio/BBQ area for a perfect 'play in the day', 'relax in the evening' experience. The bungalow itself is like a small, high-end apartment - perfectly equipped, very clean, very comfortable. And yes, plasma TV and Wireless Internet. The hosts were gracious and eager to make our experience flawless. I asked where the nearest Starbucks was located, and within 30 minutes we had freshly ground coffee and a french press in the kitchenette. While the area is packed with things to do (rafting, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, biking, iron-man racing if you like), the historical significance of Placer County is unmatched - this area is the focal point of the 1849 Gold Rush - my wife and I spend many hours visiting Old Town Auburn and the surrounding gold country. Clearly the owners (Robert and Jeanne) are in it for their passion to provide a perfect vacation experience and NOT to make money on this property - they can't be. Before we left, my brother, who lives locally, said he will rent this property for a quick weekend getaway for he and his wife - especially for the pool and barbecue area. My family and I will be back whenever we visit the area - there is no place of better value and stress-free demeanor in the area.
