Wintergreen Resort we’re not, but if you’re looking for a cozy (800-900 sq. ft.) mountain cabin with most of the comforts of home, Rocky Run Landing might be the place for you. Our motto is “You’re a long way away from it all before you ever get here.”
Rocky Run Landing sits back in a loblolly pine grove just under the crest of Hawk Ridge in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cabin is two miles up the Tye River from the village of Norwood and the James River in southern Nelson County, Virginia. The address is 3124 Cedar Creek Road (gravel road). The cabin has a telephone, but no long distance service. Your calling card will work with this phone. You’ll have to find just the right spot to use your cell phone.
Rocky Run Landing consists of a small first-floor bedroom, a small loft bedroom, a bath and a half, kitchen/dining area, and a great room. The great room has two sofas (one a queen-size sleep sofa), a chair and a small TV/VCR with cable. A wood stove is also in the great room. The small kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, deep sink, gas range, coffeemaker, and microwave oven. A dining table and four chairs are provided, along with basic pots, pans, and tableware. Rocky Run Landing has central HVAC, but often all you need are the ceiling and pedestal fans. The best experience is al fresco!
The small first floor bedroom features a queen bed, nightstand and lamp, and a chest of drawers. Bed linens, blankets, pillows, and towels are provided upon request. The half-bath is off this bedroom and adjoins the full bath. Electric wall heaters provide auxiliary heat in the bedroom and bathrooms. The bedroom also has a couple of very small closets, which are the only clothes closets in the cabin.
The staircase to the small loft is very steep and is not recommended for older guests or the very young. The loft is furnished with a double bed.
A hiking trail and a gravel road will take you the 1/3-mile to the Tye River, but be warned — both are steep. You’ll need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to drive to the river. You’ll need good legs to walk back to the cabin. By the riverside you'll find a well-groomed recreation area with picnic tables shaded by a canopy of white ash and river birch, a fire ring, and, in the summer, even a porta-potty. A "beach" is cleared to the river. At normal water levels, this spot on the Tye is appropriate for supervised child's play and for adult water recreation. Fishing is also fine! History has it that the Tye River was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite fishing stream. Rocky Run Landing is a good location to either begin or end a paddling or tubing trip on the Tye/James Rivers. A canoe is available for rental and your hosts can assist with planning river trips from one-half mile to 20 miles (overnight). Shuttle service is included with canoe rental. Tubes are also available for a lazy drift downstream. Charcoal grills may be requested for use at the cabin or in the riverside picnic area (guests provide charcoal).
The screened porch offers a serene view of Buffalo Ridge to the south across the river (if the leaves aren't too thick). Turn on the porch ceiling fans, relax in the porch swing, and whistle back to the whippoorwills. As the evening gets quiet, let the roar of the Tye River rapids lull you to sleep.
If you decide you’d like to forgo seclusion and venture into the outside world during your stay, many places of interest are within a day trip of Rocky Run Landing. Jeffersonian and other historic properties abound, Civil War sites are easily accessible, Wintergreen Resort offers a variety of activities, and kid-friendly excursions are within kid-tolerance driving distance. Your hosts will be happy to recommend itineraries based on your interests and will check with Wintergreen to ensure any desired activity is available. Many wineries and breweries are also in the area, along with local artisan shops.
Rocky Run Landing is appropriate for a family vacation, spiritual sojourn, romantic escape, adventure quest, artist's or writer's retreat, friends' get-away, or sight-seeing base. Free canine companionship is offered for animal lovers!

Charlie and Pettis were absolutely the best property owners I have ever had the privilege of being involved with, and I have stayed at dozens of rental properties in the past. Charlie personally met us at the property and spent a good 20-30 minutes showing my wife & I around the property; gave activity recommendations; and really just made us feel welcomed and like we were family. The property itself is very well maintained, both inside and out. It has both a gas and charcoal grill, as well as a fire pit, and plenty of chopped wood. We did venture down to the riverfront in our 4 x 4 vehicle (don't even try it without); and that landing area was also very well maintained, even having a shower and port-a-potty. My wife and I had plans in both Charlottesville & Lynchburg; to which the property is ideally situation about 40 minutes from either. Perfect if you want to go to Monticello or Montpelier. Also, there is a couple small grocery stores that have limited food stuffs within a 5-10 minute drive. Within a 15-20 minute drive, there are several restaurants and a Food Lion supermarket, which has everything you might need. The property is just isolated enough, but not extremely so that we felt "too far" from civilization. We will definitely not hesitate to stay at Charlie & Pettis' property again when our travels take us back to the Amherst area.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We reserved the Rocky River Run cabin for July 1-8 this year. We so looked forward to a quiet week on the river enjoying frequent visits from our newlywed son and his wife who live nearby. Well, as you Virginians know, mother nature had other treats in store for us for this year's fourth! The havoc caused by the "Rancheo", including numerous downed trees and power outages, meant that the cabin on the Tye had no power and therefore no water. We were so disappointed! But I am writing to share how helpful and wonderful the cabin's owners, Charlie and Pettis were to us despite the fact that they too were without power, phones and cell signal most of the week. When the storm hit, Charlie immediately called us to let us know the situation. (This involved driving until he got a cell signal to make the call!) Since we were coming to the area anyway, he offered to keep us posted on progress in getting the power restored so that we could go to the cabin if and when it was "on". Additionally, Charlie invited us to come up to the river and spend a day so that we could experience the water and the location, even if staying over wasn't going to work. So we accepted his kind offer and spent the 4th at the river with our son and family! We had a wonderful picnic and barbeque, got to visit more with Charlie and Pettis and some of their friends, and all in all had a relaxing, special day. Unfortunately, the power was never restored while we were in VA, so we left without spending a night at the cabin. But because Charlie and Pettis are the most gracious hosts I can imagine and own a most beautiful place to enjoy some time away from the usual schedule, we will definitely be making another trip to Rocky Run - this time to actually settle in.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We had a great weekend here. It was exactly what we were looking for...a quite escape from normal life. Even though there was plenty of stuff we could have done in the surrounding area...we chose to stay at the cabin for the entire weekend and just enjoy our solitude. We didn't leave once and it was perfect. We brought food and a few supplies with us and the cabin had absolutely everything else we needed, so there was no reason to leave. It was so quite, the only sounds we heard were the birds, frogs and other wonderful sounds of nature that helped lull us to sleep each night. The riverside area was also very nice, well kept and had everything we needed to enjoy our evenings around the fire pit under the moonlit sky (and WOW with how much light the moon actually shines out here away from all the light pollution of the city...beautiful bouncing off the rapid peaks in the river!) We also Kayaked and I was amazed at how perfect their part of the river was for a first time kayaker...and Charlie's kindness in giving us a helpful shuttle back to the property was above and beyond (and he even offered to do it more than the once we needed!). We will definitely come back if the Murphy's would be so kind to have us. And next time we will probably take advantage of some nearby attractions: Crabtree Falls, James River State Park, wineries/breweries, etc. That is probably one of the best parts of this location. You can have a peaceful low key getaway, a romantic getaway with wine tastings, or an adventure getaway. Perfect for everyone and every type of vacation. Charlie and Pettis have a gem here, and their obvious desire to just make sure every visitor has a great time and has everything they need, makes this a rare vacation rental indeed (very down to earth people). We can't wait to share this place...I hope we can convince some of our friends to come with us next time.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We enjoyed the cabin and were very pleased to find that it was so well stocked with everything you need. And, it is definitely bigger than the pictures indicate. The owners are extremely pleasant and accommodating. It was so comfortable that we spent time just hanging around the cabin playing games and enjoying the peace. Even the ride to the cabin is through picturous scenery. We will definitely stay again when we're in the area.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My wife and I, our daughter and her husband and their three children spent a very very enjoyable weekend at the Rocky Run Landing. We found time to relax, read, walk, fish, camp on the river, spend time with dear friends. We went on a special nature walk to the famous "rock bar" where we found and collected some very interestingly shaped and colored rocks. The accomodation couldnot have been better and much better than the photographs. We visited a small local country store to pick up a couple of things and found that cash and carry was the only means of payment. A nearby family restaurant provided a quick and good meal for the whole family -- the price was very reasonable, but no credit cards, cash only (eventhough they had the VISA & MC stickers on the front door). Funny story... On our drive to RRL Friday evening, we had to stop our car and wait for the Buffalo to cross the road. Home Home on the Range, Where the Buffalos Roam has moved East. The owners were most helpful in providing accurate directions and making our stay wonderful. We certainly recommend this home away from home to all who enjoy Nature's outdoor bounty.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property and we simply couldn't have asked for more; it was everything we wanted and then some. From the cleanliness and thorough stocking of the cabin, to the peacefulness and seclusion of the setting, to the helpfulness and personal touch of the owners, RRL is all we'll ever need for a weekend getaway (or more). We feel very lucky to have 'found' Rocky Run Landing. The owners go far out of their way to make sure that a guest's stay at RRL is like a stay at one's own vacation home...attentive to guest needs is indeed an understatement. Charlie and Pettis are special people and it is truly our pleasure to have made their acquaintance. While spending most of our time at the beautifully groomed riverside area and hiking around the property, at the owners’ suggestion we also ventured to a ‘local’ drive-in old fashioned ice cream parlor, a well stocked local/small grocery, and a farm market that had excellent local produce, fruits, jams, sauces and gifts (Saunders Farm – it’s well worth the approx. 35 minute trip). There are many local wineries, micro-breweries, historical attractions and restaurants throughout Nelson County so there are definitely things to do besides lazing by the river if one is so inclined. Writers and avid readers alike would find RRL to be a perfect fit for the peaceful seclusion advantageous for those activities. A good book is a great companion when staying at this property. The cabin and grounds provide one with ample opportunity for both introspection and communion with nature…it’s a bird watcher’s delight replete with waterfowl and forest birds. If you’re looking to get away from all the hustle and bustle, enjoy water/river activities, want to be closer to nature while still having all the amenities of home, and don’t mind being some 20+ minutes away from cell reception (a big bonus in my opinion), this property just might be right for you…it certainly is for us and we plan to come back very soon.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

My boyfriend and I accidently found this place online and boy what a gem! We absolutely loved it. The cabin was bigger than it looked online and was fully stocked with everything we needed and more. The host Charlie and Pettis are the nicest people you'll ever meet. We had the most fun by the river, of course and went kayaking and floated around on the tubes. We spent most of our time there and cooked out and enjoyed nature. We had the whole place to ourselves and were the only ones on the river. They even had a grill, fire ring and a port-a-potty for your convenience. We will definately be back, might even bring our kids. We spent three amazing days at the cabin for a holiday weekend in the summer and could not have been happier. From the scenic drive in on beautiful country roads, to our delight at our own private beach/picnic area and access to the river Tye, Rocky Run Landing is just fabulous. The owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome and provide more amenities than even we could have asked for. The natural beauty, however, is the real sell. The river is pristine with a gravel bottom - great for swimming - and the property has the feel of both country and woods. You could spend days down at the river without seeing another person, and that is one of the true luxuries of this property. This is a great place to bring a family, friends, or just to get a way from work for a few days. If we could give this place six stars, we absolutely would!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
