Wintergreen Resort we’re not, but if you’re looking for a cozy (800-900 sq. ft.) mountain cabin with most of the comforts of home, Rocky Run Landing might be the place for you. Our motto is “You’re a long way away from it all before you ever get here.”
Rocky Run Landing sits back in a loblolly pine grove just under the crest of Hawk Ridge in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cabin is two miles up the Tye River from the village of Norwood and the James River in southern Nelson County, Virginia. The address is 3124 Cedar Creek Road (gravel road). The cabin has a telephone, but no long distance service. Your calling card will work with this phone. You’ll have to find just the right spot to use your cell phone.
Rocky Run Landing consists of a small first-floor bedroom, a small loft bedroom, a bath and a half, kitchen/dining area, and a great room. The great room has two sofas (one a queen-size sleep sofa), a chair and a small TV/VCR with cable. A wood stove is also in the great room. The small kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, deep sink, gas range, coffeemaker, and microwave oven. A dining table and four chairs are provided, along with basic pots, pans, and tableware. Rocky Run Landing has central HVAC, but often all you need are the ceiling and pedestal fans. The best experience is al fresco!
The small first floor bedroom features a queen bed, nightstand and lamp, and a chest of drawers. Bed linens, blankets, pillows, and towels are provided upon request. The half-bath is off this bedroom and adjoins the full bath. Electric wall heaters provide auxiliary heat in the bedroom and bathrooms. The bedroom also has a couple of very small closets, which are the only clothes closets in the cabin.
The staircase to the small loft is very steep and is not recommended for older guests or the very young. The loft is furnished with a double bed.
A hiking trail and a gravel road will take you the 1/3-mile to the Tye River, but be warned — both are steep. You’ll need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to drive to the river. You’ll need good legs to walk back to the cabin. By the riverside you'll find a well-groomed recreation area with picnic tables shaded by a canopy of white ash and river birch, a fire ring, and, in the summer, even a porta-potty. A "beach" is cleared to the river. At normal water levels, this spot on the Tye is appropriate for supervised child's play and for adult water recreation. Fishing is also fine! History has it that the Tye River was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite fishing stream. Rocky Run Landing is a good location to either begin or end a paddling or tubing trip on the Tye/James Rivers. A canoe is available for rental and your hosts can assist with planning river trips from one-half mile to 20 miles (overnight). Shuttle service is included with canoe rental. Tubes are also available for a lazy drift downstream. Charcoal grills may be requested for use at the cabin or in the riverside picnic area (guests provide charcoal).
The screened porch offers a serene view of Buffalo Ridge to the south across the river (if the leaves aren't too thick). Turn on the porch ceiling fans, relax in the porch swing, and whistle back to the whippoorwills. As the evening gets quiet, let the roar of the Tye River rapids lull you to sleep.
If you decide you’d like to forgo seclusion and venture into the outside world during your stay, many places of interest are within a day trip of Rocky Run Landing. Jeffersonian and other historic properties abound, Civil War sites are easily accessible, Wintergreen Resort offers a variety of activities, and kid-friendly excursions are within kid-tolerance driving distance. Your hosts will be happy to recommend itineraries based on your interests and will check with Wintergreen to ensure any desired activity is available. Many wineries and breweries are also in the area, along with local artisan shops.
Rocky Run Landing is appropriate for a family vacation, spiritual sojourn, romantic escape, adventure quest, artist's or writer's retreat, friends' get-away, or sight-seeing base. Free canine companionship is offered for animal lovers!

We enjoyed the cabin and were very pleased to find that it was so well stocked with everything you need. And, it is definitely bigger than the pictures indicate. The owners are extremely pleasant and accommodating. It was so comfortable that we spent time just hanging around the cabin playing games and enjoying the peace. Even the ride to the cabin is through picturous scenery. We will definitely stay again when we're in the area.

My wife and I, our daughter and her husband and their three children spent a very very enjoyable weekend at the Rocky Run Landing. We found time to relax, read, walk, fish, camp on the river, spend time with dear friends. We went on a special nature walk to the famous "rock bar" where we found and collected some very interestingly shaped and colored rocks. The accomodation couldnot have been better and much better than the photographs. We visited a small local country store to pick up a couple of things and found that cash and carry was the only means of payment. A nearby family restaurant provided a quick and good meal for the whole family -- the price was very reasonable, but no credit cards, cash only (eventhough they had the VISA & MC stickers on the front door). Funny story... On our drive to RRL Friday evening, we had to stop our car and wait for the Buffalo to cross the road. Home Home on the Range, Where the Buffalos Roam has moved East. The owners were most helpful in providing accurate directions and making our stay wonderful. We certainly recommend this home away from home to all who enjoy Nature's outdoor bounty.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property and we simply couldn't have asked for more; it was everything we wanted and then some. From the cleanliness and thorough stocking of the cabin, to the peacefulness and seclusion of the setting, to the helpfulness and personal touch of the owners, RRL is all we'll ever need for a weekend getaway (or more). We feel very lucky to have 'found' Rocky Run Landing. The owners go far out of their way to make sure that a guest's stay at RRL is like a stay at one's own vacation home...attentive to guest needs is indeed an understatement. Charlie and Pettis are special people and it is truly our pleasure to have made their acquaintance. While spending most of our time at the beautifully groomed riverside area and hiking around the property, at the owners’ suggestion we also ventured to a ‘local’ drive-in old fashioned ice cream parlor, a well stocked local/small grocery, and a farm market that had excellent local produce, fruits, jams, sauces and gifts (Saunders Farm – it’s well worth the approx. 35 minute trip). There are many local wineries, micro-breweries, historical attractions and restaurants throughout Nelson County so there are definitely things to do besides lazing by the river if one is so inclined. Writers and avid readers alike would find RRL to be a perfect fit for the peaceful seclusion advantageous for those activities. A good book is a great companion when staying at this property. The cabin and grounds provide one with ample opportunity for both introspection and communion with nature…it’s a bird watcher’s delight replete with waterfowl and forest birds. If you’re looking to get away from all the hustle and bustle, enjoy water/river activities, want to be closer to nature while still having all the amenities of home, and don’t mind being some 20+ minutes away from cell reception (a big bonus in my opinion), this property just might be right for you…it certainly is for us and we plan to come back very soon.

My boyfriend and I accidently found this place online and boy what a gem! We absolutely loved it. The cabin was bigger than it looked online and was fully stocked with everything we needed and more. The host Charlie and Pettis are the nicest people you'll ever meet. We had the most fun by the river, of course and went kayaking and floated around on the tubes. We spent most of our time there and cooked out and enjoyed nature. We had the whole place to ourselves and were the only ones on the river. They even had a grill, fire ring and a port-a-potty for your convenience. We will definately be back, might even bring our kids. Lol

We spent three amazing days at the cabin for a holiday weekend in the summer and could not have been happier. From the scenic drive in on beautiful country roads, to our delight at our own private beach/picnic area and access to the river Tye, Rocky Run Landing is just fabulous. The owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome and provide more amenities than even we could have asked for. The natural beauty, however, is the real sell. The river is pristine with a gravel bottom - great for swimming - and the property has the feel of both country and woods. You could spend days down at the river without seeing another person, and that is one of the true luxuries of this property. This is a great place to bring a family, friends, or just to get a way from work for a few days. If we could give this place six stars, we absolutely would!

This house really filled the bill for our family and the owners are super nice people. We stayed at the house during the winter, but it sure looked as if there would be lots of summer fun, what with the river access and beach. The house was supplied with everything we needed and more. It was very clean. And I can't stress enough what nice people the owners are.

My family and I stayed the weekend of Thanksgiving. This was the best mini vacation ever. We are already planning our next stay. A 6-star place. The owner was so helpful and my 2 yo daughter loved him at first sight. My wife's parents came along and when it was time to leave, they did not want to leave. Thanks.

Our stay at this cozy property was excellent. Homeowners became instant friends and were beyond generous with assistance while we visited. The house was clean and well furbished. We didn't want for anything. The yard/river/etc was gorgeous and we look forward to returning to better enjoy it. The whole experience of renting here was just what we needed and we encourage anyone looking for a private place to get away to look no further.
