Hale Aloha experience...
Aloha, folks: Just wanted to give a little feedback on our experience at Hale Aloha. In short, it was great! We have stayed in many tropical places (including a number of previous visits to Big Island, all of which included rentals found on VRBO), and this one was possibly the best yet. It is truly ideal for a couple on a getaway. The only downside on our visit to Hawai’i this time is that it was too short—we usually do three weeks or more, so 10 days seemed like it was over before it began. I will say that Karen and I are explorers and like to get out and about. But, Hale Aloha is so nicely situated that we spent a lot of time at the rental (with forays to snorkeling at the south end of the road, and Pole 120—both excellent spots) and walks to Brown’s Beach House for meals, when I wasn’t cooking. We usually don’t spend so much time at our rental house, so that is saying something. That brings me to a suggestion. I am an ardent cook, and love to have the fresh fish available at Kawaihae to work with. The kitchenette at the place is quite adequate for making a meal, but is really lacking in counter space. You could put a little, narrow table just to the left of the door as you enter (with the trash can underneath), and create some additional counter space. Just a suggestion. I will also say that the cooking utensils were just fine—I have been in other, ostensibly “fancier” rentals that had cooking gear that was far more abused! It is cold here, and a blanket of snow lies over the mountains and glaciers across Kachemak Bay, so we really wish we had had three weeks!Wishing you all well, aloha and gunalcheesh.

My husband and I rented this lovely tree house for 10 days in December, and had a wonderful time. The ocean is literally just a few steps from the deck. Because the house does not have walls, but rather screens, the sound of the ocean waves lulled us to sleep each night. Snorkeling in the warm, volcanic rock pools just off the deck is unbelievable, with amazing tropical fish and sea turtles. The kitchen is compact, but adequate for two people, although remember that the fridge is half size when you go shopping. We BBQ'd each night in the Weber, and ate dinner on the deck looking out at perhaps the most incredible view of the ocean and sunset that you can imagine. The caretakers were very kind and helpful, willing to help with anything you need. There is an amazing ocean front trail that begins just a few hundred yards west down the road (at the state park) that takes you around the point and south to the Fairmont and beyond. We also rented pedal kayaks at a place next to Snorkel Bob's, near Home Depot and the airport, and explored miles of coastline, putting the kayak in at the Puako Boat Launch, not far from the house. The wonderful thing about this place is that you have all the peace and quiet of serene Puako Bay, and yet all the amenities (shopping, restaurants, sushi, golf, nightlife) of Waikoloa just a 10 minutes drive away. It is also centrally located for exploring the island, and a short drive to Waimea, which has many nice restaurants and good shopping, as well as the Parker Ranch. The bottom line: If you want a place that is 'away from the madding crowd' to simply unwind, relax and enjoy the beauty of the Big Island, this might be just the perfect spot for you, and a very good value. We will definitely be back!

A Dream Come True
A Dream Come True
I searched for weeks for the "perfect" rental for my husband and I's first trip to the Big Island. We found it on this beach front property in Puako. The house was majestic. The walls are made of screens and is cooled by the ocean breeze. You can lay in the bed and just look up and see the beautiful, blue ocean. We fell asleep every night to the sound of waves crashing into shore. The area of Puako is conveniently located about 30 minutes north of the airport and only 1 mile south of Hapuna beach. We explored the ENTIRE west side of the island from here. The house is just a quick trip on the highway to Kona, Hawi, Waimea, etc. The ocean front access is amazing. My husband snorkeled in front of the house every morning when he woke up. We saw several sea turtles right in front of the house. He snorkeled every beach we went to and he thought the area in front of our house was the best of them all. Ironically, we went scuba diving with Kohala Divers and the boat ended up stopping very close to our house for the diving. The house amenities are great as well. The kitchen was stocked with all the necessary dishes, pots, pans, and a coffee pot and toaster. The "outdoor" shower was so fun. It is attached to the bathroom and you can enjoy your hot shower while you stargaze. I emailed the owner's rental company with multiple questions and always got responses quickly. They were easy to work with and very helpful. The neighbor's are also very friendly and helpful. They even set out beach chairs on their deck for us to sunbathe on. We would highly recommend this property to any couple looking to relax and enjoy Hawaii. Every couple we told about our house on the island was so jealous. Most people pay twice the amount as this property and are FAR from being oceanfront with a private home in front of a fish and turtle stocked ocean. I would never choose a hotel or even another rental property over this home.

Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is a small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door. Puako is conveniently located for visiting all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, first class restaurants, shops and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may choose, with the exception of the volcano which is a 3 hour drive. Puako Beach is a combination of tide pools and patches of coral sand, but there are several fabulous white sand beaches just a few minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding. There is great surfing spot called Paniau at the end of Puako Beach Drive. When the surf is not happening, fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving will entertain you with beautiful green sea turtle, eagle rays, brightly colored tropical fish and one of the most glorious coral reefs in the world. The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 30 minutes, Kailua Kona 50 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 150 feet from your doors Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all. Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort. The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!
