Meadow Hill has been owned by the Lewis Family since 1946 and is a true island home with island heritage. This modest but comfortable house dates from 1877 and was renovated and expanded after World War II. It was the continuous year-round home of Captain and Mrs. John R. Lewis from 1948 to 2001. The house has been well-maintained across six decades so that future family generations will be able to call it home as well. On an interim basis, Meadow Hill has been available for seasonal rental since 2007.
Meadow Hill is 15 acres in size and is conveniently and centrally located in the triangle cornered by Old Harbor, New Harbor, and the airport. It is a hilltop that flattens into a broad, elevated meadow - hence the name. The house is the only structure on the property. The remaining 15 acres is undeveloped, offering privacy, peace and quiet, and time away from the hustle and bustle, while being conveniently close to everything when one wants to engage.
The house is located on the eastern end of the meadow and features a commanding view of Crescent Beach stretching from Old Harbor breakwater to Clay Head, and the open ocean beyond. Large picture windows take full advantage of the view.
The first floor has a large, well-equipped kitchen, dining room, living room, study, bathroom, and master bedroom with queen bed.
Looking out the windows is a special joy of being in this house. The kitchen has two picture windows, one looking to the east and the other, to the north. The kitchen table is at one of them making breakfast, lunch, or dinner that much more enjoyable. The dining room and living room also each have a large picture window.
Three bedrooms are upstairs; one with a queen bed; one with two twin beds, and one with a single twin bed. The bedroom with two twin beds offers sleeping flexibility, but maximum sleeping capacity in the house is limited to 6.
The entrance to Meadow Hill Greenway is nearby. This greenway is a ½ mile public walking trail of medium difficulty that circles the perimeter of Meadow Hill at its base. (Maps of all the island’s walking trails are available at the Chamber of Commerce office in town.) Captain and Mrs. Lewis donated Meadow Hill Greenway to Block Island Conservancy in 1992. Please see the Owner’s Profile for more information about Captain Lewis’ role in island conservation.
Boat reservations for your car are a necessity and should be made immediately upon booking your rental. Google Block Island Ferry for their web site.

Why the Owner Chose Block Island:
Meadow Hill has been in the Lewis Family since 1946 but Block Island has been the home and heritage of the Lewis Family since 1817 when the family farm, Lewis Farm, was established on the southwest corner of the island. Subsequent generations across the decades were not only farmers and fishermen but also community leaders. Most recently, Captain Lewis was the founding director of Block Island Conservancy, organized in 1972, and president for 12 years. Those were the formative years during which Block Island established itself at the forefront of community-based land protection and conservation with a goal of maintaining Block Island’s essential character and natural setting. Captain Lewis’ two sons have also played major roles leading the island’s conservation effort. Meadow Hill is not simply a place that we rent. It is our home and part of our heritage. We invite you to enjoy it as we do; enjoy the simple pleasures of relaxing in a comfortable, functional island home, looking out at the world from a quiet, private, beautiful spot as the Lewis Family has for three generations.
