Shopping around for oceanfront?? This IS the most oceanfront home around! And most homes charge $250/night plus! The oceanfront Alohahouse property sits spectacularly oceanfront on the pristine Puna Coast in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision just south of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. This 3 bedroom, 2 bath home offers the vacationer an up close and personal ocean experience! You can't get much closer to the ocean without being in it! It lulls you to sleep at night and the sunrises are so incredibly awesome - you will want to get up early even if you are on vacation! In the winter months, you can hear and see the whales that come in quite close because the ocean is deep in front of the property. This is a great spot to catch fish from the bluff and cook right on the barbecue!

Decorated island style with rattan furnishings and overhead ceiling fans in all the rooms, the home stays very comfortable all year! Sometimes you might even need a sweatshirt in the winter months! This home is centrally located and it is just a short drive to Volcano National Park, the Kapoho tide pools, and Hilo International Airport. The location is superb for the traveler wanting to set up base for the ultimate Big Island adventure. The oceanfront lanai is the place you will probably want to hang out after your day trips!

The kitchen is fully equipped with all your dining needs, all linens are provided, along with soap, and laundry detergent (you won't have time for that though!) There is also an outdoor shower to rinse off after surfing, swimming, snorkeling, or hiking the volcano. We provide a cooler for your day outings too!

The one bedroom Sunrise Cottage also located on the Alohahouse property can be rented along with the Alohahouse if it is available. This cottage can sleep a maximum of 3 guests in one double bed and one twin bed. It is currently long term rented, so only the oceanfront 'Dolphin Bay' home is available which can sleep a maximum of 6 guests.

The Alohahouse is located in a quiet, coastal community, Hawaiian Paradise Park, on one of the loveliest bays in East Hawaii where you can walk for miles and see nothing but pristine coastline and lush forests. Here you will experience breathtaking sunrises, cascading rainbows, beautiful lava formations, dolphin and whale watching, all from the comfort of your Alohahouse. The closest towns are Keaau and Pahoa for groceries, gas, and restaurants. The Alohahouse will become your island home away from home for your Big Island traveling experience because there is nothing better than coming back to your oceanfront home after spending a day of exploring - whether it be hiking Volcano National Park, snorkeling at the Kapoho tide pools, surfing at Pohoiki, soaking at the Ahalanui Hot Pond, or visiting wonderful Hilo town! And don't forget the fabulous farmers markets at Makuu on Sunday, and in Hilo on Wednesday and Saturday.

I have many repeat guests - they come back mostly because they say they have looked around and there is nowhere else they would rather be. According to my guests, the home is comfortable and a great value for oceanfront Hawaii. The price is hard to beat for what you get!! It is a place for relaxation and rejuvenation! This is the Hawaii of old where you will not find tourist resorts, high rises, commercialism, or noise. Just the sounds of nature, the waves, the whales (in season), the birds, and the cooling trade winds whispering through the coconut palms and ironwood trees. Experience oceanfront Hawaii - you will be glad you did!

NATURE SPOTS & PLACES TO SEE ON THE BIG ISLAND Puna District: Kehena Beach – At this dramatic, clothing optional, black sand beach you won’t see any Japanese tour buses, but you may see explicit body parts. If you’re cool with that, then it’s worth the trip. It’s right off 137 just before the Kulani Honua Resort, you will see a small parking area on the ocean side of the road and a few cars. There is no sign marking the path down the bluff and no stairs, but it’s not a difficult walk down. Be aware the surf can be deceptively rough and waves crashing on the shore can be dangerous. Just be cautious and watch the other swimmers. Dolphins are frequently spotted playing in the beautiful blue water and the coconut palms and tropical setting is quite lovely. Recommended for the adventurous. Pualaa (also called Ahalanui) Warm Pools Beach Park – This county park is the best natural swimming spot in the area. This very large pool is situated right next to the ocean where the salt water gushes in at one end and the warm mineral waters at the other end. It’s a big warm pond on the ocean! The natural setting is gorgeous with coconut palms, picnic tables, showers and porta-toilets. Again this is on 137 and is well marked. This is a great spot for the whole family. Pohoiki Surf Break – Considered by many to be the best surf spot in lower Puna! Not really any sandy beach but it’s an easy entry into the water and “Bowls” is an incredible tube ride. Just up from Pualaa Warm Pools Beach Park. Stay on red road (137) and you can’t miss it. There is also a boat launch and an amazing bay which has great waves too. There is a new park here now!! Kapoho Tide Pools & Champagne Pond - Heading south on 137 leads past Kapoho-Kai Road. This road goes to one of the most unusual locations on the Big Island. Dozens and dozens of spring-fed, brackish pools and tide-pools, some volcanically heated, are strewn thoughout the area known as Kapoho Tidepools. Champagne Pond is located in the gated community of Kapoho Beach lots, but you can park and walk inside. You will find a calm, protected ocean inlet filled with crystal clear water. A scattering of fish and many sea turtles (I have seen 9 at one time) await. The ocean water is also geothermally heated (about 90 degrees on top) and changes with the tide. Volcano Area – Volcano National Park – This is a must and has something for everyone. The Thurston Lava Tube is a big cave created by the lava flow. The caldera and rim of the volcano is spectacular. Drive down chain of craters road to the end and hike to the lava flow. Be sure to take good walking shoes, water, and if you go at night a flashlight. Kileaua Caverns Tour – tours of caves made from lava flows! Amazing! Hilo Area - Richardson’s State Beach Park – A nicely protected black sand beach that’s good for swimming and snorkeling. Lovely setting with large trees, ponds, picnic tables and showers. Safe for children. Located on the south end of Hilo Bay. Akaka Falls – A stunning botanical garden with one of the largest waterfalls on the island. Take a picnic and spend some time nature watching. About 15 minutes north of Hilo on the main highway. Rainbow Falls – Just minutes above Hilo – an awesome double waterfall Helicopter tours from Hilo airport – great experience especially on a clear day! West side of the island Hapuna Beach – voted the best white sand beach on the Big Island. Good swimming, boogie boarding, and body surfing, as well as snorkeling. Captain Cook’s Bay & Monument – in south Kona in Kealakakua in one of the most scenic bays you will ever see. A small black sand beach, but the water is like an aquarium with many varieties of tropical fish. North Coast Waipio Valley – on the Hamakua Coast this valley has a staggering look out that will make you a believer. This was the site of the last battle of King Kamahamaha’s unification of the island. Legend has it that sometimes the spirits of dead warriors appear on the valley wall. Horseback riding tours are available! Waimea – charming town on the North Coast that reminds one of the Pacific Northwest. The Hawaiian cowboys, the paniolos, who inhabit the area have horse shoes and rodeos. The Parker Ranch, the largest in the USA, takes up much of the surrounding area. South Point Punaluu Black Sand Beach – beautiful beach where you can often sea giant sea turtles! ...morecollapse

We stayed at the Dolphin House for two nights. As soon as we walked into the vacation rental, we knew we had shortchanged ourselves by staying there only for two days! We saw 4 turtles minutes after walking onto the lanai! The ocean view is too incredible ... no photos can do it justice. We were two couples and a 5-year-old and the three rooms were spacious enough for us. The little one enjoyed the third room ... we hadn't seen dolphins during our trip but he consoled himself by looking at the dolphin painting in the third room! The kitchen did the job ... the house is old but it's comfortable and the location makes up for any minor inconveniences. We will definitely be back!

Owner response: Two nights isn't enough to get the relax factor!! But so glad you enjoyed the home anyway. Built in 1980, it is an older home but we definitely keep it up, and in today's world, you would not be allowed to build this close to the ocean. That being said, you will definitely enjoy the oceanfront location with the most beautiful views south and north! Watch turtles, dolphins, & whales during the winter months. This is an oceanfront Hawaiian beach bungalow that will make you say "WOW" when you walk in the front door! Experience a slice of Hawaii that many never get to see, and what a great price for your own piece of paradise!

Great location and no better place to sit and watch the ocean. 50 ft from the door is the waves. All level and no climbing needed. We sat on the edge of the cliff and just relaxed. Good location about 25 minutes south of Hilo, close to the volcanoe area, close to lava viewing, no rat race or tourist overload. It is definately remote and quiet. House had plenty of sleepy area. Has recycled rain water, which wasn't bad, but if you are picky about drinking water, get some bottles too. Very happy with our stay.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, people with disabilities, sightseeing.

Owner response: We fell in love with this home because it is THE MOST oceanfront home around with amazing views of Kaloli Bay! It is a wonderful ocean experience! It is great with no stairs, so people of any age can enjoy the single level living. Water is on a catchment and is fine for bathing and cooking, but bottled water is preferable for drinking. We love the feeling of being very remote, yet actually very close to restaurants, Volcano National Park, Pahoa, & Hilo! We think it is the best of all worlds!

Hi Pat Thanks so much for getting that check on its way to me so quickly. I really appreciate it. We had such a wonderful time in Hawaii! OMG, what a lovely place it is. We loved your holiday home. Thank you so much for allowing us to use it during our visit. This was our first visit to Hawaii, but I don't think it will be our last. My husband is already planning another visit. It's such a beautiful place and we really want to go back and see more of it. Thanks again. Maggie

We stayed at the Aloha-house (Dolphin House) for two nights and were completely astounded by the sweeping views of the ocean up and down the coastline. Pat was easy to work with and gave a horde of great recommendations to do in the area, including restaurants, grocery stores, & suggestions of activities we could do for free. She was also very prompt at returning our deposit. We made sure we arrived during the day, as another reviewer suggested, which was good as it might be hard to find during the night. The house was clean and had pots, pans, books to read for adults, puzzles for the kids to do & even a little rice cooker. There was a small fold-out mattress in the closet so that when one of my boys started kicking his brother in his sleep it was easy to move him. The 4 stars instead of 5 is just because it is a little older and some things were a little worn, but obviously functional and well maintained. There was a nice refreshing breeze off the ocean the whole time we were there. We went to Hawaii to relax. Going to sleep to the amazing sound of crashing waves and waking up to the absolutely beautiful blue ocean helped us really appreciate the wonders of Hawaii. We could stand out on the porch and watch a mile of waves down the coast with a spectacular sunrise in the background. Thanks so much for making this wonderful location available for us!

Owner response: The proximity of the home to the ocean is what makes this property truly amazing, but it is also adds a little wear to the home. The home was built in 1979 and we have maintained it very well with new roof, paint, tile, etc. I like the fact that it is an older home (well not that old!) with it's true Hawaiian charm. We keep the linens well equipped and update regularly, and the kitchen is well-equipped to make this feel like your own Hawaiian hale. I am at the home now and just purchased all new bedding for all the bedrooms a Location, location, location - not to be missed!! This home is truly oceanfront!!

This house is all about the charm and location. If you want to relax and unwind...this is the place to do it. When you open the front door the beautiful water just takes your breath away. I was up at 6am every morning with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise. I'll be back Pat!

The BEST part of our Hawaii vacation was staying at this house. We felt so comfortable, so cosy, the house was clean and the view was amazing! We watched spinner dolphins go by and sea turtles playing in the surf everyday. We watched the moon rise, the clouds float by, the rain showers come and go, rainbows that appeared several days in a row, and the night sky with all the stars shinning brightly. We had a difficult time leaving the house to go exploring. If we ever go back to Hawaii, this is where we will stay and sit out back and watch the waves crash against the cliff..........without a reason to leave! Well, maybe to go buy some groceries ;)

Love sharing this home with travelers looking for something different than the high rise resorts, and for our low prices it certainly beats the hotel route! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at this oceanfront retreat and hope you can return sometime, and we always offer discounts to repeat guests. Mahalo a nui loa!

We completely enjoyed this house, and Pat was very helpful with the reservations and explanations and questions all along the way. The house was wonderful and the location was exotic and amazing. We found everything we needed already waiting for us in the house. All we needed to add was our food. The lanai is only about seventy feet from edge of the the lava cliffs and breaking waves from the Pacific ocean. We sat on the lanai and watched "the show" every morning and night. Its location is great for privacy and for easy access to the local stores in the towns around it. We were never more than about ten minutes from anything we needed. The visit was wonderful from every perspective. This is a definite choice if you're going to The Big Island. You cannot lose with this place.

About the owner: We love the Big Island of Hawaii and have been vacationing there since the 1970s. We travel between California and Hawaii several times a year to 'slow down' and 'warm up.'

                  Why the Owner Chose Hilo:
The Alohahouse property is as oceanfront as one can safely be - you feel like you are on a cruise ship without the motion. We are ocean lovers and we love the beautiful lava formations on this property and the sounds of the waves breaking on the bluff! The location is great for day trips to Volcano National Park, Kapoho, Hilo, and so much more! And we love coming back to the ocean!

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Sitting on the oceanfront lanai with spectacular views of Kaloli Bay and Kaloli Point, watching the fishing boats and cruise ships go by, dolphin, whale, & turtle watching are just a few of our favorite pasttimes while at the Alohahouse. It is great having no houses to spoil the oceanfront view, yet we have great view of the coastline in both directions. We feel like we are on the edge of the world here and very far away from the faster pace of California. We love to barbecue on the oceanfront barbecue, and take long walks along the rural coastline.
