Full kitchen with dishwasher, microwave and all dishes, pots, etc. Entrance is through a heated mud room for skis and boots. Bathroom with double shower, washer and dryer. Large closets, cable TV, VCR, DVD, stereo. Private courtyard for outdoor eating and pool in season. Hot tub by appointment - ask about availability. Six miles to Williamstown, MA and 6 miles to Bennington, VT; both with scores of recreational, entertainment, culinary, and cultural venues.
Dog under certain circumstances. Additional photos and information available at our website listed elsewhere in this listing. Calendar is not always maintained, please contact me.
We moved here full-time in January of 2007. In a portion of our barn complex we operate a commercial photo studio and a craft and photo gallery which our customers describe as 'fun', 'unique' and 'not what they expected.' We have a new section of Fair Trade Crafts from a variety of overseas projects designed to help people achieve a middle-class lifestyle in their local context, and hope to open an additional shop expressly for this purpose in the near future. The hills are alive with artists working in all mediums, especially those who take inspiration from our spectacular scenery.
We love the proximity to real people with deep ties to the earth and are incorporating their efforts into our 'made in America' concept. Two years ago we opened a 'Vermont's Best' ice cream shop and last year added 'Vermonster Dogs', using all locally sourced products. And, we didn't see ourselves selling maple syrup, but what we offer is made right up the hill from our gallery!! How could we resist.
Come to Vermont and see why we chose this as our final home.

My girlfriend and I decided to spend a couple days in rural VT before our grad school resumed later in the month. Staying at Gabe and Pat's place perfectly fit the bill. It has an idea location. Nearby are amazing cultural venues, such as MASS MoCA in N. Adams, the Williams College Museum of Art and the Clark Museum of Art in Williamstown, and music in Pittsfield. There are great nearby skiing (Jiminy peak) and snowshoeing/XC skiing (Prospect Mtn). The apt itself is great. The kitchen was more well-appointed than I was expecting! Food processor, salad spinner, adequate supply of cooking utensils! We did enlist the hot tub, which was fun at 25 degrees on a clear night. Gabe and Pat are attentive, but gave us our space to enjoy our trip. Thanks for being great hosts!Owner response: I am so happy you two were satisfied. You seemed to be enjoying yourselves, and Rooney let you enjoy the hot tub in peace! Good luck this semester!

We stayed in south of Bennington for 3 weeks and it was a great location for enjoying the beauty of Southern Vermont. The apartment is spacious and quite well equipped. We particularly enjoyed the patio and spend lots of time there, reading, relaxing and enjoying a glass of wine. I would give it 5-stars for "pet friendly". Our dog enjoyed the patio as much as we did and he loved playing with Rooney. Gabe came to the rescue when we encountered a deluge of flies in the apartment. He was "landlord on the spot". Also, enjoyed the Vermonster hot dogs.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, pet owners.
Owner response: Some folks just won't let you know what it takes to get four stars! Our Rooney loved sitting with you in our brick courtyard as he always wonders why WE never sit there (It's reserved for the exclusive use of the guests) and he enjoyed playing with your low-keyed pooch. You were great guests. Come back next year and we'll try for 5 stars!

My husband and I stayed with Pat and Gabe while visiting Bennington for a quilt show. The accomodations were exactly as described. It was a nice clean large space for a long weekend, and well equipped. Very peaceful too. We enjoyed shopping at the ArtWorks, eating ice cream, and visiting Williamstown, MA. Our little dog was welcome and played with the owners' dog out in the yard. That was a bonus-- he had a great playmate. We will come stay again when we are next in the area and highly recommend this rental. Thanks to Gabe and Pat!Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children.

My husband and I stayed here for a week and loved it. Everything was as advertised and even better. The apartment was clean, cozy and comfy. We had everything we needed and the owners, Pat and Gabe, were the ultimate hosts. My husband was sick for a few days when we first arrived, and they offered their own cold medicine and vitamin C to get him up and at 'em. They went above and beyond and we can't thank them enough. If you want to relax or sight see in a beautiful part of Vermont, this is the place. You are close to MA, and NY and can be in 3 states in minutes. Nearby Bennington has great restaurants, shops and historic sites. MA has Mass MoCa, a must-see museum. You can hike in New York, Vermont or MA. Pat and Gabe have a wonderful store with one-of-a-kind items as well as the best ice cream and hot dogs ever! Come visit Pownal, VT. You'll be glad you did!Owner response: Janet! Wow! It sounds like I wrote this myself. In fact, I hope readers don't think I paid you to write such a glowing review. I'm glad your vacation ended on a high note, and we really appreciate your leaving the apartment in such immaculate condition.

We had a wonderful time in Vermont. We had the pleasure of staying at the apartment for 6 days in May. We loved it there. It was clean, well-maintained, quiet and cozy. The queen bed was very comfortable. The location is perfect -- it is very close to the Appalacian trail and Pat provided a very detailed file on many hiking/adventure opportunities. We cooked simple food in the kitchen, and had quiet and relaxing dinners at the cottage. Pat and Gabe were helpful in answering all our questions and concerns and we highly recommend this property. We hope to be back to visit soon! P.S. The Crazy Russian Girls Bakery in Bennington was fabulous!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

We stayed in the apartment for a week, and used it as a base for taking day hikes on the Appalachian Trail (AT) through southern Vermont into northern Massachusetts. The apartment was well located for access to AT trailheads in this area. We found the apartment to be clean and well equipped. Pat and Gabe were friendly and made sure that all went well. We enjoyed our stay.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

The hosts (plus a sweet dog) were awesome which is enough to recommend it! But the apartment had more than ample space for 4 with a big bathroom and kitchen. It's a quick drive down to Williamstown and the rest the area has to offer.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, people with disabilities.

We have stayed a few times with Pat and Gabe. They are a very friendly, and welcoming couple. The property is exactly as described. It is actually even nicer than the pictures show. We have been there both in the Summer, as well as in the Autumn. The surroundings were stunning both times. The apartment is well-appointed, and quite comfortable. The large farm table is perfect for a small dinner with friends. I love that they allow dogs. If we needed anything, we simply asked and Pat and Gabe were happy to assist. Don't miss this wonderful retreat, just a stone's throw from Williams College. Debra Jo JacksonDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I stayed for three nights in this apartment. We were doing some geneological research, and needed a central location to several small towns in Mass, Vt, and NY. This was a perfect spot!! The apartment was really lovely, beautifully decorated and well equipped. The unit was clean, and well maintained. It is way too convenient (haha) to the owners' hot dog and ice cream stand, and next to their really great crafts store. It is an easy commute into Bennington, and to points beyond. Thank you, Pat and Gabe. We had a great time!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway, people with disabilities.
Owner response: Thanks! Everyone seems to have their special attraction whether it's the hot tub, the pool, slow-churned ice cream, and now our Vermonster Dogs are a huge hit! Guests frequently comment that they were concerned that a rental adjacent to retail wouldn't be private, quiet or have enjoyable outdoor spaces, and were pleasantly surprised to find all three.

About the owner: What can I say? We are creatives who love the beauty and serenity of this place. We spent our adult lives in Fairfield County CT with a 5-year sabbatical in Seattle, and looked for a location that would not only fulfill our space requirements but meet our emotional needs as well. We share our environment with Rooney McDuff a spirited, way-too-loving golden retriever, and Ritz and Riley, two coal black cats who think they're dogs. We've always loved one-of-a-kind places, and this definitely fits the bill.
Why the Owner Chose Bennington:
Well, this is more than a vacation rental; it's an entire lifestyle. Pownal Valley is probably one of the most beautiful in all of Vermont. Rolling limestone mountains might not make for great downhill skiing but they do make for fabulous vistas. Our views are without challenge anywhere throughout New England. Our complex houses our studio and gallery spaces as well as our own residence but our guests ALL say they feel totally private and alone on the property.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
This is all about peace and quiet: not a partying place by any stretch. For our rental guests: Private courtyard for grilling and dining. Private fire pit for relaxing and s'mores. Private pool for a leisurely swim. Private hot tub for a satisfying de-stressing. AND a fabulous flat, safe yard for kids and dogs to play!
