Located on the lower western slopes of Twin Peaks, this impeccably retro appointed West Portal/Parkside home equally serves the first time visitor and the seasoned San Francisco traveler. West portal is a small neighborhood in San Francisco on the western slopes of the city. Walk outside the house and public city transportation is literally at your doorstep ready to take you north to Golden Gate Park and the Golden Gate, west to Ocean Beach and the Cliff House, east to Downtown/Market Street and the lateral areas of Castro, Mission Dolores, Pacific Heights, Hayes Valley, City Center, Nob Hill, Chinatown, the Embarcadero, SOMA, Fisherman’s Wharf, etc.
West portal is a small neighborhood in San Francisco on the western slopes of the city. Because of West Portal's small size and mix of shops, cafes, casual eateries (that represent dozens of different international cuisines), special occasion restaurants, coffee roasteries, dessert shops, chocolate and candy shops, wine stores, small grocery stores, library,a bookstore, local movie theatre, and pubs, it has a smaller city village atmosphere and "retro" charm.
Should your trip include an automobile, your access to east-west and north-south arterials is easy. Whether you intend to visit Point Reyes, the wineries of Napa-Sonoma, Half Moon Bay, Carmel/Big Sur, or Berkeley and East Bay sites there is no need to struggle with a labyrinth of streets before reaching the appropriate highway/freeway.
This home permits the traveler to return from their excursions and truly rest while taking in a full view of the Pacific Ocean from the living and dining rooms (telescope included). The sunsets are magnificent; should the famous fog creep in and up the slope, you will experience a true San Francisco phenomena. No need to plan deeply regarding where to eat.
One of the finest butcher shops is located 100 yards away as is the local fruit , vegetable store and premiere wine shop. The kitchen is fully equipped but you also benefit from the tens of excellent restaurants situated in the West Portal Tunnel area, only a 6 minute walk away!
The nearby Taraval corridor is home to some family style eateries. Both locations are within walking distance (in a safe and secure neighborhood environment). On-site parking into private enclosed garage with electric garage door opener and full laundry facilities at your home-away-from-home add to a stress-free holiday. The street car goes right by the house, so there is some rumbling during the day, but quiet at night.

Why the Owner Chose West Portal
When my wife and I were looking to build a home in San Francisco, West Portal was the area that met our criteria. We wanted a home with a view, a friendly and safe neighborhood, convenience of shopping, and transportation close by. As my wife does not drive, access to public transportation that would take her anywhere in San Francisco was essential. As we like to eat well, we had the owner operated butcher shop and fruit store within a 2 minute walk (where we quickly knew everyone by name, they become our friends.) West Portal had tens of restaurants (and even more now), a movie theater, spas, coffee shops, pubs, and banking. No need to fight for a parking spot as we would walk for 5 minutes and there we were!
The Unique Benefits at this House

Owner's Map of West Portal
My wife and I have lived in San Francisco for over 60 years! This is the city where we met, were married and raised our two daughters. The home we are offering, with a view to the ocean, was built to our specifications 40 years ago by an accomplished San Francisco contractor who used quality materials. The house is well designed, classically appointed, and light and airy and boasts an excellent location. We have had many gatherings in this home and due to the open floor plan between the living room, dining room and kitchen, all our guests could easily interact with one another.

My three sisters and I stayed in this home for ten wonderful days. It exceeded our expectations - very clean and well-equipped. For the size of the house, it was a fantastic bargain! The garage was a nice bonus, as we rented a car to visit Muir Woods and then drove to the wineries in Sonoma (an excursion I would definitely recommend). If you're planning to remain in the city throughout your visit, however, don't bother renting a car. The Muni stops at the corner and couldn't be easier. Get a Citipass and enjoy unlimited public transportation. I would most definitely recommend this rental to anyone visiting this beautiful city.

First we are French so please apolozige for our unperfect English. After a trip in 2 national parks and a long car way along the Pacific coast; we did appreciate this spacious home for our familly (3 children & us) in a calm place. The beds are confortables and the kitchen is perfectly fitted for preparing any good meals. While the house is not in dowtown, it is located near bus and street carst allowing to reach the main neibourhoods of San Francisco rather quickly. Moreover the owners are so kind. Sincerly Kina & Laurent

We had a wonderful time staying in this home. Everything you could possibly need was within a few easy blocks. The location of the home is perfect. We would walk to West Portal for meals, to the Safeway on Taraval for food, and hop on the street car for transport. It could not have been better. The kitchen was also very well equipped and the bed linens looked brand new and were luxurious. We were able to fit both cars (Honda CRV and Nissan Sentra) in the garage which was also a plus. The view would be magnificent but it was overcast the three days we were there. I would definitely stay here again. Everything is as shown in the photos. There were no surprises.

We had a great time in San Francisco and thoroughly enjoyed our time in this home. The house was spotless and had everything we needed for our stay. It was great to have a garage to park our rental in and it was easy to get to all of our destinations. We even used the BART to get downtown and it was very convenient. We fell in love with the West Portal area and loved all of the little shops and restaurants. Fabulous and convenient location! We loved staying in your home.

Our experience was fabulous -- flexible management, ease of access, LOVE the MUNI right out the door -- perfect for our family to relax after some long days in San Fran. SO GLAD we had the room to stretch out given the summer rains -- far better than a hotel, the kids didn't go crazy or sent anyone else there! Clean, clean, clean. We will be back.

Found VRBO.com on recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed. Property proved to be the best living arrangement for our family and far superior to a hotel room. Listing accurate, location and views superb, very timely communication with owner and price was excellent. We WILL stay there on our next trip to San Francisco and have already recommended the home to friends traveling to the city.

Between the outstanding views of the ocean, Parkside and West Portal neighborhoods, and the L-Taraval Muni Metro outside the front door, this place is pretty close to the ideal San Francisco 'Avenues' rental. Roomy and open in the living area. Firm mattresses, chairs with good lumbar support. Great skylights in the bathrooms, hall and the well appointed kitchen. Guerra's butcher shop with all their Italian specialty meats is steps away. Safeway is two blocks. The Parkside Farmer's Market with great produce and Mediterranean specialty items around the corner on Taraval. We enjoyed West Portal restaurants Fuji for sushi, Fresca for Peruvian, and Xiao Loong for Chinese delivery. L-Taraval light rail gets you downtown subterranean to Market Street very quickly. And the views from the living space. Wow! We usually like to have coffee, fix breakfast then see the city, maybe do fine dining and club music. In this house we spent quite a bit more time relaxing and enjoying the view. Then going to Guerra's for Italian sandwich to eat in line for events. Great rental! Great people to deal with.

Sparkling clean, soaring views, and ultimate convenience made this home perfect for our stay. Our family of 4 plus 2 other family members stayed here, and the space was fantastic. Beautiful living room, great full kitchen made it easy with our 2 small children. Everyone had their own space. The neighborhood is super charming. We rented a car, and were able to park in the garage. Margie and Evelyn were wonderful to work with, and we'll be renting again when we visit San Fran next time! Loved also that the MUNI stopped outside our door!
