My home is situated in the historic centre of Aix en Provence, just steps from the Cours Mirabeau, considered the Champs Elysees of Aix. The house is bathed in typically Provençal light, and through its large windows there's a sumptuous view over the garden and the facade of an 18th century residence, as well as the rooftops of Aix en Provence.

You can enjoy the large, sun filled living room in soft tones of gray blue, go out to discover the old city or stroll among the stalls of Aix's markets. Music lovers are certainly welcome and can hammer out a few notes on the white grand piano, the showpiece of my home, where music is omnipresent.

The city of Aix en Provence was originally established more than two thousand years ago, and later chosen by the Romans for its fine springs and strategic location. The nearby Mont Sainte Victoire, visible from my rooftop terrace, is so named for the Roman victory over the local Celtic people who were resisting becoming part of the Roman Empire. Fast forward 1900 years or so, and it’s this same mountain that Cezanne painted so many times, each time from a slightly different angle, in a different season or weather conditions. You can see Cezanne’s studio in Aix while you’re here, and visit the Granet Museum which houses many of his paintings. My home was once the residence of Cezanne’s wife. The Mont Sainte Victoire is also the site of Picasso’s penultimate home, a grand and ancient chateau left in the same condition it was in at his death, and for the first time open to the public for 4 months in 2009, in connection with the important 2009 “Cezanne and Picasso” events planned.

The markets of Aix are well-known for their many delights, from tablecloths to beeswax candles, tomatoes to tiny purple artichokes, and the shops offer every charming treat or object you can imagine. Of course, you’ll want to have a taste of the fine wines of the area, the sweets made of candied melon and almond paste called “calissons” and no visit to Aix is complete without enjoying a coffee or cold drink at the café “Les Deux Garcons” so dear to the heart of M.F.K. Fisher in her book “Two Towns in Provence.”

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1999

I’m feeling a bit self-conscious about writing about myself, so I’m just going to quote what someone else has written about me, which I think captures the essentials: The eldest daughter of Italian parents, Aline d’Aquilante brings the flair and expertise of a lifetime passion for art, music and the arts of the table in the loving restoration of her Aix-en-Provence home, which she now makes available to visitors. In 1999, after many years in the serenity of the Luberon, and a successful period as a restaurateur, Aline took on the near derelict property occupying the top two floors of a fine four story 18th century merchant’s residence. With vision and determination she saw the potential of the lofty rooms, moved some walls and added a rooftop terrace, and by carefully integrating modern facilities with traditional materials, she created her wonderfully stylish home. It’s this attention to detail which won Aline the accolade of a major feature article in a prestigious French home and lifestyle magazine. The soft furnishings, surfaces and furniture are never less than spectacularly well chosen, providing the visitor the most wonderful experience of their stay in Aix. The apartment does not turn its back on the city – the famous Cours Mirabeau is only a two-minute stroll away – instead its windows looks over the open space and trees of a private courtyard. “Paul Cezanne’s wife once lived in these rooms. And it’s hard not to feel the strong connections here with our artistic heritage,” says Aline. Indeed, Mont Sainte Victoire, the subject of so many studies by Cezanne, is visible in the distance from the apartment. “I do love to travel” says Aline, who also owns a tiny Paris apartment. “But it’s Provence that has taken my heart, and it’s where I’ll always return.”

Why the Owner Chose Aix en Provence

Aix en Provence is a fantastic place! You can enjoy all the cultural advantages of a much larger city, with opera, symphonic orchestra, dance and of course the Lyric Music Festival every summer. There are great art museums and galleries, Paul Cezanne’s painting studio, and a constant flow of temporary art shows. Theatre, films, outdoor concerts and events, it’s all here. There are daily outdoor markets and weekly larger markets, in addition to some of the best shopping in France. Provencal and international food is on offer from simple café fare to Michelin-starred gourmet dining – and all points in between. Aix has a world-class spa with pampering treatments and fitness options. My home is in the Mazarin district, in the heart of the historic city center of Aix, just off the Cours Mirabeau, and two blocks from the 17th century Four Dolphins Fountain. Aix is well-located, with the TGV train station 15 minutes away, and the Marseille airport not much farther. There are many day-trip options out of Aix, the seaside village of Cassis, Arles and its Roman amphitheater, the flamingos and white horses of the Camargue, Chateauneuf du Pape’s fine wines, I could go on and on. The tourist office can give you lots of other ideas, and organizes many walking tours as well as day-long excursions in the region if you don’t have your own car.

Memory of a Lifetime

Date of Stay: 12/19/11 Review Submitted: 01/07/12

Our family of 4 (2 boys, 21 & 17) traveled to Aix to experience Christmas in Provence. We hoped for an apartment that was beautiful, charming, yet comfortable and convenient. La Maison de Carlotta was that and much more. First of all, my conversations with Aline, the owner, were always delightful as she is a vivacious, gracious and kind person. At the last minute she was unable to greet us upon arrival since she was with her new grandbaby, born only days before our visit, but she arranged for her wonderful neighbor to show us around the apartment. At first glance we were impressed with the way Aline had turned a naturally charming historical apartment into an artistic, classy home. Each room was warm, light and lovely. We loved our bedrooms, each with their own bath and each beautifully appointed. Being musicians, we were thrilled with the grand piano in the living room and wonderful cds to enjoy during our stay. The kitchen was well-stocked, the laundry room easy to use and the dining area charming. The location of this apartment is fantastic. Everything you need is just around the corner: boulangeries, pattiseries, restaurants, beautiful shops of all kinds and fresh outdoor markets! During Christmas, the Cours Mirabeau is decorated with beautiful lights and lined with Christmas gift booths. On Christmas Eve we bought all our fresh food at the incredible Saturday market for the Christmas feast we cooked and shared with friends, served in Aline's gorgeous dinnerware. A very special day indeed! We were able to take excursions to Uze', Avignon and Cassis and easily make it back in time for a good nights sleep. Aline met us on our 7th day and we wished we had more time to spend with her....as well as more time at La Maison de Carlotta. What a place! We will always treasure our time there and hope to return someday.

Beauty and comfort

Guest: Susan (Laurel, Mississippi)
Date of Stay: 11/20/11 Review Submitted: 12/01/11

We rented La Maison de Carlotta for a week in November, and were completely delighted with every aspect of it. Each room is beautiful and decorated with soft colors and a warm Provençal style. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms ample, the kitchen is cozy, and feels very French, and the living room and dining room are lovely. It was perfect. Aline, who speaks excellent English, is the warmest and kindest of hosts and made sure our needs were met, and helped us reserve a taxi for our early morning departure. La Maison de Carlotta is on a small street, right off the main street of the old section, the Cours Mirabeau. It is an easy walk to anywhere in the old city.

A trip to remember

Guest: Clara Fe (Puerto Rico)
Date of Stay: 10/22/11 Review Submitted: 11/16/11

Just back from a trip to Provence, with our home base at the Maison de Carlotta in Aix. It was indeed an unique experience. A large apartment, in a beautyfully restored XVII century building, with a charming owner that made our rental, arrival and departure process smooth and easy. Location? The best!...... Just a few steps to Cours Mirabeau Confortable? Very!..... Three bedrooms and three bathrooms, spacious and well appointed. My only complaint? .......That I had to come back to reality after a wonderfull week. Thank you Aline, for sharing your home with us. I hope to be back soon!

La Maison de Carlotta

Date of Stay: 10/02/11 Review Submitted: 10/10/11

Our visit to La Maison de Carlotta was outstanding. The location is perfect--a block and a half from the Cours Mirabeau and the Cafe des Deux Garcons. And the apartment is perfect. It's beautifully decorated and so comfortable. Each bedroom has its own bath. It's everything that a French home should be. Aline is a charming and gracious hostess and truly wants your visit to be wonderful! If I ever get to go back, it is the only place that I will consider staying!

La Maison, a home away from home

Guest: none (hodge)
Date of Stay: 09/17/11 Review Submitted: 10/05/11

This apartment is warm, welcoming, comfortable with a living room, dining room and well supplied kitchen. The three bedrooms, each with its private bath , are roomy, beautifully appointed with fresh, ironed linens. Well located, this apartment allows one to walk everywhere in Aix, and Aix itself is central to all that is so interesting in southern France. There are three flights of stairs to reach the ground level and additional flight to the bedrooms. Street noise exits on the nights the disco, down the street, is open. The owner is helpful in all respects, before, during, and after the visit.

A Delightful Two Weeks in Provence

Guest: Family of Four (Japan)
Date of Stay: 06/26/11 Review Submitted: 07/13/11

Our family came to Provence to celebrate our daughter's graduation. We feel so fortunate to have found La Maison de Carlotta! It was a wonderful home base from which to explore...we enjoyed it's central location in Aix immensely and also toured many of the surrounding villages such as Luberon, Ansouis, Arles and Avignon. Aline (the very gracious landlady) supplied us with a map and had circled her favorites. We were certainly not disappointed with her recommendations! At the end of the day, though, we were always happy to return to this beautiful home. It is within easy walking distance of restaurants, shops, markets, etc. In fact, while in Aix, we never used our rental car, but parked it in a public parking garage five minutes away. The house has an elegant and spacious feel. It was quite nice for our 20 year old son and 18 year old daughter to each have their own room and bath. However, the "room" we enjoyed the most was the rooftop terrace! We spent many hours here with a cup of coffee or glass of wine or sharing a leisurely meal. It's truly a charming spot and one of the best features of the property. We fell in love with Provence and will definitely be back! P.S. The only "snag" we encountered during our stay was after one week the Wifi stopped working. I mention this only because I was impressed with the way Aline handled it. As soon as we alerted her to the problem, she sent her daughter over to try to determine what was wrong. (It was nothing they could fix as the problem was not within the house.) But phone calls were immediately placed to sort it out. Unfortunately, it was not working again until after we left, but this was something out of Aline's control. We could not have asked for a more attentive, immediate response to a problem.

A wonderful week in Provence

Guest: Joe (Iowa City, IA USA)
Date of Stay: 10/10/10 Review Submitted: 10/30/10

What a great week we had in Provence staying at this property. We were 3 couples looking for a real Provencal experience and we were delighted at what we found. The listing was accurately described and reflected on the VRBO website. It was a charming apartment located 2 minutes from the Cours Mirabeau, Aix’s activity center. The property was clean and well maintained and Aline, our gracious hostess, was very helpful in making our stay a memorable one. I definitely would recommend this property to anyone who wishes to be within minutes of Aix’s “centre ville” activities. The Monoprix, the smaller grocery stores and open air markets were all within easy walking distance and we had a wonderful time eating breakfast and some lunches in the apartment some of the time and yet enjoying the nearby cafés and restaurants. There is a parking garage near to the apartment for those who have a rental and the small villages around Aix are delightful. Someday we hope to return.

A wonderful way to experience Aix

Guest: Grant & Kate (Auckland, New Zealand)
Date of Stay: 03/01/10 Review Submitted: 04/25/10

We cannot speak highly enough of Aline (the landlady) or the apartment. We are a family of six, and enjoyed the apartment for 6 weeks at the end of winter/beginning of spring. The apartment is a beautiful provencal apartment, and is warm and secure. It is more spacious than we anticipated. It is beautifully (!) furnished, very comfortable, and very-well equipped with appliances, utensils, linen, furnishings, and WiFi. The location of the apartment is difficult to beat - it is but a few steps from the centre of Aix (Cours Mirabeau), and all of the museums, shops etc, and there are two beautiful parks nearby. Aline is a very hospitable, helpful and gracious hostess. We would highly recommend the apartment to anyone wanting a taste of Aix.
