Location: Etlan, Old Rag Mountain, Virginia, USA (80 Miles from Washington ~DC~ Area, 1.5 Hours from Richmond)

Accommodations:  Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath (Sleeps 3-5)

Old Rag Hikers Cabin is perfect for couples with or without a dog, or two good friends, who really do not need a house that sleeps 6, and don't want the impersonal hotel room! But we can also accommodate a total of five if you don't mind "tenting"! We love to make room, so don't hesitate to ask us about that! We do have a website for you to view. It contains more information and forms to download. Just take a few moments when you are done here to Google oldraghikerscabin for more!

The Cabin is rustic, yet, you will find the basic necessities and then some! While cell phones may not work up here, there is high speed satellite internet ... so go ahead and bring your laptop, and email or Skype everybody about what a great time you are having!

The cabin's front porch is a great place to drink your coffee in the morning and watch the hummingbirds visit the feeder. You can also watch the yellow finches as they get their morning thistle feed, or listen to the Tohees singing "drink your teeea"!. We often wonder just how many different kinds of woodpeckers are living up here in the hollow with us! Keep your eyes open for the big pileated ones with the bright red heads. Also early mornings sometimes allows a deer sighting! Binoculars and a bird book are provided! Then, head off on your hike up Old Rag for the amazing views! Or take a trek up White Oak Canyon and marvel at the waterfalls!

In the evening you may enjoy relaxing the "observation deck". This deck sits on the highest point of the land and is a great vantage point for observing birds. It has seating and a propane grill if you choose to cook your evening meal outdoors.

The "outhouse" is a separate building, known as Paige's Doghouse, that is equipped with a composting toilet. Not the old stinky kind, but a Sun Mar state of the art, ecologically sound, environmentally friendly toilet system. We are proud to offer this alternative toilet housed in this charming little building that has a history all its own!

This brings us to the shower. The shower is outside, beneath the sky. Yes, an outdoor shower. Bathe with nature! It is quite private, and there is plenty of hot water! This is one of our favorite features! We do supply large bath sheet towels for your outdoor shower experience!

For pets we have installed a comfortable sheltered kennel. You may leave your friend there for the day if you are going to places where dogs can't go.

We also have a tent site to offer for additional people (no more than 5 total). You will need to bring your own tent and sleeping bags. Please talk to us in advance if you would like this option.

We live further back on the property, so if there is anything you may need, we are there! We once had a couple who forgot their butter, and the Country store was closed. We are more than happy to help !

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1996

Woodie and his dog Mac taking a break on a hike up Old Rag Mountain. As you drive up the Rider Hollow Lane in Etlan, you are looking straight at Old Rag Mountain. This was the sight that first struck Woodie when he bought this small but beautiful parcel back in 1996. Woodie and Simone moved to Etlan in Madison County in 2006, and lived in the cabin full time with their dog Mac until November 2008 when their house that sits further back on the property was finished. The cabin was designed and built over a period of years as they began to spend more and more time here in Virginia's beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and in the shadow of Old Rag. Prior to that, they were living on their sailboat, Inspiration, which had been Woodie’s home for 30+ years. But when time came to settle down, nothing could match the beauty and peacefulness of Madison County, and spending time in Etlan always beckoned.

Why the Owner Chose Etlan

At Old Rag Hikers Cabin, we believe in leave no trace. Our land backs up to the National Park Lands. A beautiful rocky, fast running creek, known as Ragged Run, flows water from the top of Old Rag and follows Rider Hollow Lane. Wildlife, birds, bears, deer are our neighbors here.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Every year people from around the world visit the Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park as well as the surrounding villages and towns, many of which are historic places, From hiking trails to caverns to white water rivers, this area is scenic, historic and breathtaking! Wineries surround us, and Charlottesville , with all it's music and local culture is only an hour drive. We have it all here and never get tired of the beautiful scenery...even on a drive to the grocery store in Madison! In addition, there are festivals and bluegrass music, horseback riding spring, summer and fall at Graves Mountain, only 6 miles away in Syria.
