I rented The Davis House for a family reunion and to attend the Ryder Cup in Medinah, IL. This is a beautiful old house in a very quiet neighborhood location. It’s very close to the town of Glen Ellyn, which is very cute and has several nice restaurants and shops. The house itself is very old but has a modern kitchen with a beautiful old farm-type table that could handle all of us at once. The master bedroom is huge and has a large bathroom with a walk-in shower and a bathtub with whirlpool. The other two bedrooms upstairs share a single bath. The second bedroom is large and comfortable, but the third bedroom is very small, with a single bed and a trundle pullout. This bedroom was not very comfortable for the third couple. It would be fine for two children though. We also enjoyed the outside deck where there was a large table and chairs, as well as a large barbecue grill. The property was clean and the owner was responsive.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners.

We held our daughters wedding in Joliet and needed a place for family gatherings. We live in another state and had friends and relatives visiting from out of town. We rented this beautiful home for about 6 days and it worked so much better than staying at a hotel. I recommend it to all. Great location near downtown Glen Ellyn with a lot of amenities close by. It is situated on a quiet family street which makes it a nice relaxing atmosphere. I was able to hold a nice brunch on Sunday morning for our out of town guests.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

We rented the Davis house for me and my family for part of the summer. The only way I can describe the experience was heavenly. The house isn't just a destination, it is a living piece of history and art. When we weren't spending the afternoon on the porch swing enjoying breeze and looking out upon the elaborate gardens, we were picking concord grapes off the vines that grew athwart the arched iron trellis. And if that wasn't enough, our experience was truly transformed to 200 years into the long past as the kids collected the grapes so that we could make grape jelly in the old world french country kitchen. Another pleasant surprise was the town of Glen Ellyn was only a 10 minute walk to town, and what an adorable antique town this was! While we were there, Glen Ellyn hosted an art and music festival in town which was the icing on the cake. This house deserves special accoloades and recognitionRecommended for: Families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway.

Though it has plenty of high-end furnishings, it was not a very practical house. However, the biggest problem we had with the house was the inaccuracy of the listing. I did confront the owner with the inaccuracies while at the house and following our stay but he claimed at the time that the ad was accurate and would not agree that we had reason to complain. He has since changed the ad but it originally claimed to be a 4 bedroom (there are 3). When we got there I asked about the fourth br, he claimed that a downstairs hallway could accommodate a cot. This space is the path to the exterior, the basement, and the half bath and cannot function as a bedroom. The bed count he listed origwas only tangentially related to what we found when we got there. The listing included this bed configuration: 2 Queens, King, Murphy, Twin, Twin, Double. In actuality there is a master bedroom with a king, a second bedroom with a twin that has a twin trundle, and a third bedroom with a queen and a double sleeper sofa. So really there is a king, 2 twins, and a queen plus a double-sized sleep sofa. This is nothing like what the ad claimed. There are also two air mattress for those who don't mind sleeping on the floor. The listing claimed it slept 9 (now he's changed it to 8) but that includes the sofa bed. I had read the listing very closely to ensure that there would be adequate beds for my family, which included two seniors and since there was only one couple among us, I relied upon the listing to ensure that single people wouldn't have to sleep with someone else. Between the inaccuracies in the bed count and the bedrooms, we had a really tough time accommodating 7 people. When I asked about the errors in the listing following our stay and told the owner how unhappy we'd been he suggested that it was my responsibility to tell him and he would have brought in some cots. I think it's his responsibility to accurately list his property and not hood-wink his guests into expecting something that isn't there. And cots in hallways are not a substitute for beds in bedrooms. He lists the house as "Handicapped Accessible (May Have Limitations)." This is NOT a handicapped accessible house and to suggest that it is not only ridiculous but offensive. Anyone with mobility issues would have to be carried up the steps to the front door and to their bedroom, There is stuff everywhere for a child to grab and break so it's not child-friendly. I'd say more but I've run out of space!Owner response: There are many options for bedding at the Davis House as well as sleeping areas besides the 3 bed rooms. Two of which are very large. On the main floor just off of the kitchen is the library with built in book shelves and window seat. Originally when we bought the house this was the 4th bed room. It is 12 by 10. This is what was referred to as a path. This easily accommodates a Hotel rollaway bed or Aero bed. We do not use cots. In the master suite sweet there is a large octagon turret sitting area. This makes a great nursery or extra sleeping space. We do our very best to satisfy our guests and are only a phone call away. Our guests arrived just before 4 on Saturday and as always we told them to call if they had any questions. When we arrived to water the garden late Sunday afternoon is when we were approached that each guest other than the couple needed their own bed. They did not notice the trundle single or Aero beds. She was fine with that. The hotel bed was at another location and I would have gladly brought it in and would have done so Saturday evening if I was notified. I heard nothing until Wednesday 2 days after departure. Our goal is to make people happy and we have been very successful at it with all of our vacation rentals. We look forward to having you as our guests. Yours Sincerely, William Harty,

We came to Glen Ellyn with the hope and expectation to absorb the local flavor, be able to walk to the Metra, enjoy time at this rental property, and relax and enjoy family time.....and we were able to do all of this! We were grateful for a very NEAT property as well as a feeling of security. The neighborhood was quiet, beautiful, and clean. The home was well cared for and we felt our needs were met when we had any needs or questions. The property owner was prompt and courteous. Thank you!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week of gracious living at the Davis House while renovations were under way at our home just a few miles west. Beautifully appointed with an eclectic mix of old and new, rustic and refined, it's totally cozy and elegant at the same time. Our only regret was that our stay was in winter and we would have liked to enjoy the deck and pretty gardens in spring or summer. William was an excellent host and made sure we were comfortable and felt at home. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a special experience and access to all the charm of living in a Victorian home and enjoying beautiful downtown Glen Ellyn just a few blocks away.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This was one of our best vacations - we thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Davis House. The property owner was wonderful - very responsive and friendly. The home is very comfortable and welcoming. It was so much better than staying in a hotel. Glen Ellyn is a quaint town and we enjoyed walks along the tree-lined streets, the shopping in the downtown area and the friendly folks at Einstein's. It was hard to leave. Our family highly recommends the Davis House if you have an upcoming trip to the Chicago area (lovely suburb with easy access to downtown and other areas of interest).Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The Davis House was the perfect addition to my wedding week. My family lives all over the country and were all flying in for the week of my wedding. Unfortunately, my townhouse would not accomodate everyone and when I found the Davis House I was thrilled. My parents were able to have a "home away from home" while they were in town and were also able to have a spot where my family could gather and spend time together. I was also able to make use of the home the morning of my wedding for my bridsmaids and myself to get ready. My photographer was thrilled as soon as he saw all the great rooms and beautiful yard to use for photos. I would highly recommend the Davis House.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We held our daughters wedding in Glen Ellyn this summer. We live in another state and had friends and relatives visiting from 7 or 8 other states. Our daughter lives in an apartment and we needed a place for small gatherings in the evenings. We had it for a week and it worked so much better than staying at a hotel. I recommend it to all. Great location near downtown Glen Ellyn but situated on a quiet family street. Best of both worlds.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

My husband and I rented this lovely victorian home for the Christmas holiday. The home was large and comfortable and able to accommodate my entire family which included our 2 infant grandsons. Santa left numerous presents under the Christmas tree in the front sitting room. Mother nature also created a Rockwell like scene outside with 3 in. of beautiful snow! It was a wonderful experience and I would certainly consider staying there again.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We stayed recently at the Davis House and it was a wonderful treat. We have 2 children, ages 3 and 6, and thought that the house was perfectly suited for a family with kids. One of the previous reviewers commented that since there are so many nice things in the house, it might not be suitable for young children. Here's my opinion: Yes, the house is beautifully decorated and not 100% childproof. BUT... if your children are reasonably well behaved and you are willing to keep a little closer eye on them than you do at your own house, then I would say it's a lovely place to stay. Plus, I suspect that if there is anything of extreme personal or monetary value, the owner would remove it from the house so as not to get accidently broken. I loved the swing on the front porch, and the kitchen was a nice gathering place for a family meal. The neighborhood was very quiet, and we enjoyed being able to walk 2 or 3 short blocks to the nearby park. I was also able to take a few morning walks to Lake Ellyn, a beautiful lake near town. We hope to return, maybe next time to enjoy the fall colors or winter snow.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway.

The home is lovely and the grounds are beautiful. The home is in a quiet neighborhood and there is a park nearby for small children. The home, however, is not particularly suited for small children. We are seniors so this didn't effect us, but I would have been very nervous with small children around since there are so many beautiful things in this home. The master bedroom is wonderful with a separate sitting area and a large bathroom. The kitchen was well equipped, but had no dishwasher or garbage disposal. This didn't effect our stay, but I was a bit surprised that the remodel didn't include these two things. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen preparing meals for the family. There was a wonderful gas range and great counter space. The outside deck was perfect for a family gathering, and the owner, William, is a delight. I would definitely recommend this home to my friends.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, sightseeing.
Owner response: We have had many children of all ages and have never had any mishaps.

We enjoyed our week-long stay here in Glen Ellyn. The house is lovely with beautiful grounds. I spent a fair amount of time in the kitchen so appreciated the stove top and counter space. There is no garbage disposal and no dishwasher. While that didn't detract from my stay, it has been awhile since I washed dishes by hand. Guess I am spoiled. We are seniors and do not have small children anymore. Not so sure this home is "kid friendly." With so many beautiful things in the home, I would have been nervous the whole time that something would have been ruined if there were small children around. There is a lovely park close by for kids to play in, however, so keep that in mind when renting. The master bedroom is lovely with a wonderful bathroom. The second floor laundry room was very convenient. The piano room and deck were ideal, and the neighborhood was very quiet. I would definitely recommend this home to my friends.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Sorry that you didn't find the wonderful Bosche diswasher that is part of the kitchen cabinetry.........:)

We just returned from a great week in this amazing home! I grew up in Glen Ellyn and was returning for a family reunion. The Davis House provided us with comfortable accomadations for our immediate family of 6 plus a toddler. The home is well appointed, is beautifully furnished and every detail has been considered. Architecturally it is a gem. Classic front porch, beautiful yard and landscaping, close in yet private. We loved it and would highly recommend it. We plan to return!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We loved staying here. The owner made sure we had everything we needed. During a chaotic trip it was a relaxing oasis to come back to. We loved sitting outside on the porch swing and enjoying the deck for dinner in the evening. The house was beautifully decorated and immaculately kept. Downtown Glen Ellyn is a little slice of Americana. It was a quick walk downtown where our 2 year old daughter loved 2 Toots with its trains delivering hamburgers. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway for your family, this is the perfect spot.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway.

My family and I stayed in this charming home for a couple of weeks in February of this year. From the curb, it was clear that this is not your typical vacation rental house. The house is meticiously maintained and nicely furnished. The photos do not do justice to the quality and details contained throughout. My children (ages 3 and 1) both enjoyed playing in the large front yard, and I really appreciated the quiet cul-du-sac location. The house is situated within walking distance to the train (although we never heard the train), as well as the quaint downtown Glen Ellyn. The owner was very accomodating and easy to work with. We would definately stay there again!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
