We spent a beautiful 3 weeks at Sunset Casa. All three of the apartments are beautiful with fantastic ocean views. We loved the proximity to town . La Penita is a wonderful Mexican town. The town is vibrant and alive with wonderful friendly people, inexpensive restaurants, grocery stores, bank machines, pharmacies and almost eveything else you would want from a small town. We always felt safe in the enviroment. Our apartment was clean with a beautiful ocean and beach view right to the next town, nice furniture and a comfortable bed. I can't say enough about the owners Robi and Dan . They were friendly, very informative about the area and showed us a great time with a fun trip to Chacala and a margarita night. All in all it was a vacation to remember and we will be back
Owner response:Thanks for your wonderful review. We are so happy when our guests and friends have a great time in the property and town we love so much. Gracias Robi and Dan

After spending year after year with tourists in packed all-inclusive resorts throughout Mexico, we wanted to try it on our own. We could not have picked a more perfect place!!!! This property truly does have it all! Our apartment was spacious, beautifully furnished, well stocked, quiet, clean, new, and very comfortable! The property is stunning - everyone is right - it is much more beautiful in person and the location is exceptional!! The sunsets are different every night and the most amazing we've ever seen! You truly are right on the ocean and we could easily walk to La Penita for groceries, drinks, supplies, or restaurants. All the restaurants were not only inexpensive but very excellent!! La Penita is a small Mexican fishing village with "real" people - we felt completely safe the whole time we were there (for 4 weeks). This place is beautiful, romantic and relaxing - we loved practically having the pool all to ourselves .... and the whole Rivieria Nayarit was very fun to explore when we felt like walking (to Guayabitos) or hoping a bus to any number of beautiful little towns along the coast. Robi and Dan gave us such a warm, wonderful welcome, alot of helpful information about the area, and the gift of their friendship. If you want to experience the "reality" of small-town-Mexico coupled with a true "piece-of-paradise" then we would highly recommend this property.
Owner response:Thanks so much for all your kind words. We really enjoyed your company , our informal get togethers and look forward to seeing you again. Hasta luego y gracias Robi and Dan

3 of us stayed at this property for a 50th birthday party. The owners seemed nice at first, said never can hear anything so enjoy. First night told too loud, another time brought people over at 6:30 p.m. to check out property as they thought they would rent long term. Asked permission first, said would only be there one hour, after 45 mins. we were told this was not acceptable. One of the most beautiful places I ever stayed at, until one realizes the amount of rules are brutal. My parents in their 70's would get kicked out. The lady of the house is unreasonable and I would never recommend to anyone, ever!!
Owner response:This property consists of 3 vacation rental units, plus the owner’s home. Our policy is to offer our guests quiet enjoyment of the property for the duration of their stay. During the evening mentioned in the complaint, it appeared that a party was developing that would cause discomfort to our other guests. They were asked to please take the party elsewhere, which they did. We did not think we were being unreasonable.

Relaxing Vacation in a Real Mexican Town

If you are looking for a relaxing warm vacation where you can experience the everyday life of a Mexican town, amid the backdrop of miles of sandy beach & endless colorful sunsets, then Sunset Casa is the place for you . The accommodations were wonderful, exactly as described, with every kitchen gadget or appliance you will need, including a quality blender for your margaritas. The bed was super comfy the suite was very clean. There is a great view of the ocean from the deck. We could also watch the fisherman bringing in their daily catch, while literally being swarmed by egrets, pelicans and seagulls; this was very entertaining. There are loads of places to eat in town, but don't be afraid to stop and eat with the locals at one of the many street-side vendors. We also bought fresh shrimp/fish and loads of fresh veggies and fruit in town. Our favorite casual place to eat was “Las Brisas”, a 5 minute stroll from Sunset Casa; I recommend the shrimp burrito. They don’t stay open late so be there by 5:30 ...and you can watch the sunset . Everything you need is in town, but you can easily hop a bus and head to one of the many neighboring beachside towns ( we recommend San Pancho with its interesting library and recycle program!)... if you are missing the noise and crowds of the “touristo” area, you can walk 25 min down the beach , or take a 7 peso taxi to the resort town of Guayabitos. One of the highlights in La Penita, is the Thursday Market which starts around 0800...until 1:30-2:00. You will find loads of jewelry ( silver, leather, stones), blankets, pottery and other artisan wares, but you will also find that the locals come here to buy baked goods, fruit and vegetables in addition to almost every household item you might need. The main plaza by the church seems to be for visitors and artisans, while the side street behind the plaza was where the locals streamed. The owners of Sunset Casa, Robi & Dan are super hosts; they are very helpful if you have questions or need advice, and we really enjoyed sharing a drink under the palapa. It is a true testament to our wonderful experience, that when we returned home we found that we not only dearly missed La Penita & Sunset Casa, but also Robi, Dan (& Maggie) and the other wonderful people we met. Hasta Luego
Owner response:Thanks for your great review. People like you are truly a treat to have at our wonderful vacation spot

Relaxing Stay in Beautiful Old Mexico

We recently returned from 5 very enjoyable weeks at Sunset Casa in La Penita in Nayarit State. Our very congenial hosts were Robi and Dan who built their lovely 2 story home right on the beach. Robi and Dan live downstairs; upstairs are 3 very clean, modern apartments equipped with all the amenities. Each apartment has a terrace from which to view the vivid sunsets, mesmerizing waves, and unbelievable number of egrets, frigates, and pelicans. We were in the larger apartment, the Aztec, which has a wide terrace fronting the ocean as well as a Juliette balcony off the bedroom. Sunset Casa is even more beautiful than the listing photos depict. Views are extraordinary. La Penita is an authentic working Mexican town with all the dust, sounds, smells and sights of Old Mexico. We loved it. In 5 weeks we did not have a bad meal, and food was very cheap. A 25 peso taxi ride or a 3 mile hike- much of which is along the beach- brings you to Guayabitos with its many restaurants, bars and activities. Other interesting towns reachable via bus or taxi are Chacala, Sayulita, Los Panchos and Bucerias. The Mexican people here are warm and welcoming with none of the aggressive hawking found in more touristy towns. There are no big grocery stores like Mega or Costco, but we found almost anything we wanted in the local markets. Meat and fish are readily available and cold Mexican beer delicious. If you want the mega stores, bus or taxi to Bucerias. We were afraid we would be somewhat bored in La Penita, but we never were. We enjoyed the contrast between the busier towns and the quiet La Penita afforded. From our balcony, we saw only the pool, waving palms, sand, ocean and hundreds of circling and diving birds. More often than not, the beach was devoid of people except for the fishermen mending their nets. Sometimes we felt we had this vast stretch of sand to ourselves. We liked meeting Robi and Dan and the other guests (Canadians rock!) under the palapa for drinks while watching a glorious sunset and then talking into the night under a starry sky. If you are into all inclusive resorts with loud music, group activities drinking contests, prescribed meals and security walls to insulate you from the locals, this is not for you. But, if you want to experience Old Mexico before the developers spoil it, and you don't mind an occasional whiff of reality, Sunset Casa is the place to be. Thanks, Robi and Dan, for being so helpful and for creating this slice of paradise.

After years of Mexican vacations we finally found a rental we look forward to returning to. Sunset House as described by Robi & Dan's brochure is exactly what they promised. It is new, kept very clean, any concerns and questions were immediately dealt with. We immediately felt safe & comfortable in Sunset Casa and with our hosts for a month. The house & grounds keeping was done very thoroughly and at minimum of disturbance. Robi's 10 page information package regarding Sunset House and LaPenita area was the most informative we have ever received in our travels. Prospective guests would be wise to study this package for it's accurate LaPenita knowledge. From our quite and private surroundings it was an easy 5 minute walk to Central Avenue for friendly shopping, dining and entertainment, you will soon have your own favorite places as we did. Our route was down the beach past the friendly local fishermen, mending their nets or sorting and cleaning their fish. Lunch under a beach Palapa or a trip to Rincon, is a easy 30 minute walk on a gently slooping beach or a 25 peso cab ride. Our family & friends have been well informed of our great LaPenita/Sunset Casa vacation, but feel that may have been a mistake, as future bookings may become difficult for us. We have booked for 6 weeks next year and can hardly wait. We could say many more positive things about Sunset Casa / LaPenita, but Robi's brochure covers it very well.

sunset house was everything as advertised. If you are looking for quiet, this is the place to be. The ocean is right in front of the house and the waves were more than p.v. My wife was looking for smaller waves, as she lost her sunglasses after being tossed around. Really not that bad. The place is clean all the time, did not use the bbq as the places to eat in La Penita are everywere, and the food is great. If you are looking for venders on the beach a half hour walk south to the town of rincon de guayabitos is a great place for beers, food and vendors on the beach. Could go on but this is not p.v. which is okey by us. by the way, buses are everyware to go anyware and very inexpensive.
