This spectacular home on the "right" side of the tracks was custom built and completed in 2009 by owner Doug Sigler. Doug's love of woodworking and the skill developed by a lifetime of devotion to his craft are clearly evident in every room: cherry kitchen, master closet and dressing area, ash and bamboo floors, tambour vanity doors. These handcrafted details shine as brightly as the mountain views.
Cantilevered porches and a stone patio overlook the nearby Toe River a short distance from the train tracks. Deer will often come by to drink from the river and it's not uncommon to find wild turkeys gathering on the lawn. Trains pass by frequently. And yes, you can feed the fish from the dock on the pond (We'll show you where we stash the fish food.)
A brief verbal tour:
As you walk into the front door of Coal Train House, you'll find yourself in the Great Room, a large open living and dining space with a wonderfully functional kitchen to the right. A wide hall to the left includes the coat closet, a half bath and stairway to the lower level.
At then end of the hall is the master suite with a queen size handcrafted bed. There's a comfortable sitting area for reading and relaxing as well as a dressing room with custom cherry closets and vanity. A full bath with jacuzzi tub, walk-in shower and vanity with two handmade sinks completes the suite.
Sliding glass doors open to the stone patio and lawn on the lower level which offers two spacious guest rooms and full bath with shower. One room features a custom-built queen size-bed and walk-in closet; the other has two twin beds and a walnut game/card table designed by Doug.
Coal Train House is close to nature but far from the beaten track. It makes a great getaway for one or two couples. Children are welcome but supervision is necessary with both a deep pond and an active RR track in the back yard.
Penland School is 10-15 minutes from the house and supermarkets are about 20 minutes away.

A Wonderful Stay!

Our family of three humans and two dogs desperately needed a break. I began the VRBO search but knew once I found the listing for the Coal Train House this was the house for us. My husband and son, and yes even I, love trains. The conductor would blow the horn if he saw us watching. We got to the point where the first person to hear a train coming yelled, "Train!" Aside from the excitement of watching trains, there was also feeding and fishing at the pond. And reading laying on the hammock on the dock of the pond after walking through a little beachy area of sand. The Toe River is just down the hill and my guys waded, skipped stones and panned for gold. Alas, they didn't find any but they still had fun. While the guys were doing their things I was reading and relaxing. There are many places in and out of the house to do that but my favorite was a rocking chair facing out to a beautiful view. The kitchen was very well equipped. The house has more cool features than I could ever describe. Our wonderful hostess was Kathie. She met us and guided us over the mountain and through the woods on a fun gravel road to the house. She welcomed us with a plate of brownies! Yum! And if you were wondering, our dogs had a great time also. We will definitely go back when we can.

If you love the river and the train this is beyond wonderful. My boyfriend surprised me for my birthday with a weekend at the Coal Train House. Everything was so perfect! The house was amazing, the river was beautiful and the train going by every few hours was so great! We can't wait to go back! The owners, Kathie and Doug have really outdone themselves! We have stayed at many cabins and B&Bs and this one is by far the BEST!

We had a wonderful weekend at the Coal Train House. The owners were very helpful, and had left homemade cookies for us on the counter. The setting was lovely by the North Toe River. The house is a beautiful contemporary design, with a well thought out layout. It was perfect for two couples, and would be perfect for a family as well, since two of the bedrooms are located on the lower level with their own bath. We will certainly be looking forward to our next stay at Coal Train.

We were met by Doug and Kathie at the bottom of a snow covered road and when our vehicle couldn't make it up the road, they transported all of us and our luggage to the cabin and left us their all wheel drive work van for the week! It just gets better from there. The cabin was beautiful, the wood working in the bathrooms and kitchen all made by Doug with his years of expertise, there was a decorated christmas tree waiting for us, and sleds for the kids! We had three days to explore the different small towns around us and hike the property, then Christmas morning the snow started and it snowed for 3 1/2 days, so we sledded and had hot chocolate and great family time. The coal train that goes by the house is wonderful, we all love trains and it only blows it's whistle if you flick the lights off and on, like we did every chance we got. We played around by the river and made snowmen on the pond. It was a wonderful time and Kathie and Doug could not have been better hosts to us. We plan on heading back there for the rhodendrons this summer and look forward to staying at the Coal Train House again! thank you Doug and Kathie!

Our Thanksgiving stay at the Coal Train House could not have been nicer. The house was absolutely beautiful from the beautiful architectural details on the interior to the lovely wooded river views from every window...loved seeing the coal train pass by and the kids had fun running out to wave and getting the conductor to blow the whistle. The set up of the house was terrific and accommodated our two families very comfortably. The kitchen was very well equipped and preparing our Thanksgiving dinner has never been so enjoyable. We have stayed at many places throughout this area in North Carolina and nothing comes close to the Coal Train House...a real treat.

If you want (need?) a mountain getaway, this is the place; very private, quiet and beautiful. We loved waking up to the mist on the mountains and wading into the Toe River. Also, the house has everything, seriously. We love to cook and the kitchen had everything we needed; pots, pans, proper utensils, coffee maker (and coffee!), corkscrew, grill with charcoal and upgraded appliances. There were no corners cut here - the woodwork is literally amazing (we discovered the owner/builder is a master woodworker), two private master suites, whirlpool tub, custom shower, two decks, etc. Also, the area is beautiful and filled with craftspeople; potters and glassblowers. The Penland School of Crafts is very close with a great gallery and coffeeshop. We'll be back!

The Coal Train House is a wonderful vacation destination. It is clean, comfortable and new, has lots of morning sunshine and a spectacular view of the mountains, river and railroad. The lake was a great retreat we all enjoyed feeding the fish, watching the amazing wildlife, each morning wild turkeys, deer and rabbits abound. We still have the image of the doe crossing the river with her fawn amazing….Kathie & Doug were friendly, professional, honest and did everything they could to make sure we had everything we needed and had a good time, and we did. Needless to say they have every need covered, we felt as if we where staying at a 5 Star Resort & Spa. Tranquility, fresh air, natural beauties, all in one place The Coal Train House is great place to stay, so we recommend it wholeheartedly. Thanks again for a great experience.

At every turn there are details that we wish we had at home. The house is a gem that makes it easy to vacation. Incomparable views from every window; soothing sounds of the babbling river coupled with the views of the rustling trees make this an idyllic country getaway.
