Just upstairs from the home-based cooking school Les Petits Farcis is this charming holiday studio with a view of the 17th-century place du Jésus. As you look out the window you will see the baroque Eglise St-Jacques on your right, while facing you is one of the most popular restaurants in the Old Town. The fourth-floor location in this 400-year-old building means there are stairs to climb, but your reward is plenty of light (and perhaps an extra croissant in the morning)!

A little history

Our building in rue du Jésus, sometimes spelled rue du Gésu, is thought to date from the beginning of the 17th century. Like many buildings in the Old Town, it began life as a monastery. It’s hard to imagine all the stories these walls could tell but we do know that the previous owner, a painter and sculptor, was one of Picasso’s muses. Careful renovation has preserved keeping the terracotta tiles, fireplace and other details that give it charm. The walls are painted in soothing tones, while modern furniture and paintings in bright colors add a cheerful, irreverent feel.

What you will find

This 25 square meter (269 square foot) studio has everything you need for a comfortable stay in Nice. It’s ideal for a single person, a couple or a family with a small child. The spacious entrance has coat hooks, a full-length mirror and a handy ledge so that you don’t misplace your keys and other small objects. Off the entrance, a sliding door leads to the bathroom, which has a full bath and hand-held shower, plus a washing machine.

In the main room, an archway that is one of the studio’s original features separates the kitchenette from the living area. Small but space-efficient, the kitchen has two halogen burners, a built-in refrigerator, a microwave-convection oven, good-quality pots and pans, and all the dishes and cutlery you will need. Next to the kitchenette is a table for two or three with brightly colored chairs.

Separated by a wood beam along the ceiling, the living area has a double bed on one side and a two-person sofa on the other. The sofa’s mattress folds out onto the floor, making it a safe place for toddlers to sleep. You can improve your French by watching the national channels or choose from our selection of DVDs. In the TV cabinet you will find tourist information about Nice, including several guidebooks. The apartment has WiFi access. A built-in cupboard has space for you to hang your clothes and store away other things. In summer a mobile air conditioning unit helps keep the apartment cool. If you need anything to make your stay more comfortable, we are just downstairs.

The neighborhood

Built in the 16th and 17th century, the Old Town (known as the Vieille Ville in French) is the most charming and colorful part of Nice. Its ochre, terracotta and pink buildings recall the Italian influence in this city: long ruled by the Kingdom of Savoy (based in Piedmont and Sardinia), Nice has only been part of France since 1860. Four short blocks from the apartment is the legendary food market Cours Saleya. Downstairs is a bakery with a wood-fired oven, at the end of the street is a coffee roaster founded early last century and around the corner from there is the city's best fresh pasta shop. Continue past the pasta shop and you will come to the cheerful local wine merchant. The pedestrian streets around the apartment are filled with restaurants and bars which make this area particularly lively at night. Nice's legendary pebble beaches are a five-minute walk from the apartment, and if you don't feel like swimming you can walk, cycle or rollerblade along the Promenade des Anglais. For trips outside town, the bus station is nearby and the train station is four stops away on the new tramline. If you come with a car (which is really not essential in Nice) we can recommend nearby carparks.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2008

Rosa Jackson, a Canadian-born food writer who has lived in France for 15 years, runs the home-based cooking school Les Petits Farcis in the Nice Old Town. She lives with her French husband Philippe and her seven-year-old son. Rosa writes about the French Riviera and Paris for a number of guidebooks and magazines, including Time Out, Fodor's, France Magazine and Australian Gourmet Traveler.

Why the Owner Chose Nice

We fell in love with this 400-year-old building while still living in Paris and soon found ourselves moving to Nice. The studio is just upstairs from the apartment where we live. We like the idea of being able to host those who take Rosa's cooking classes, but the apartment is available to anyone who wants to experience life in the Nice Old Town.

The Unique Benefits of this Studio

This apartment is perfectly placed for enjoying what Nice has to offer, from the beach to museums to trips outside town. The owners are nearby to answer questions that you might have and to provide breakfast on request. This apartment is available for stays as short as one night.

    • My husband and I stayed here for four nights in September as part of our honeymoon. Driving into Old Nice was more overwhelming than we expected, and we wouldn't recommend that to anyone! Once we got there, Philippe and Rosa were so welcoming, helping us find parking and bringing in our luggage, and we quickly forgot our harrowing drive. We arrived to a snack of fresh basil, tomatoes, tapenade, breadsticks, and wine, which was so lovely and unexpected. The room was exactly as it looked in the pictures- bright, clean, and neat. The space in this apartment is used very well, and we had everything we needed there. The kitchen was well equipped for basic cooking, and even had oil, vinegar, coffee, and spices. We loved doing our laundry in the apartment and hanging it out to dry "the French way" off the shutter. The location was perfect, and it was an easy walk to many parts of Nice. The five flights of stairs were no big deal for us, and helped us work off our evening gelato habit. We would definitely stay here again next time we go to Nice, and will recommend it to our friends. The atmosphere of this part of the city is so much more interesting and unique than the area near the big hotels. We enjoyed feeling less like American tourists and a little more like locals. Rosa's cooking class was one of the highlights of our trip, and her suggestions for restaurants were very helpful. Thank you Rosa and Philippe for your hospitality!

    • My wife and I rented the studio in Nice for an entire week. It was an incredible stay. Rosa was very helpful and a perfect hostess. Her and Phillipe provided restaurant recommendations and we spent a wonderful day in her really fun cooking class. The studio was very clean and in the perfect location for exploring the Old Town in Nice as well as getting around outside of Nice and to the beach. We loved staying here and would again next time we travel to Nice.

    • My son and I stayed for four wonderful days at this great apartment in Nice. Rosa and her husband were perfect hosts and provided great information about the town, where to eat, to shop, etc. The studio was just the right size for the two of us and Rosa and Philippe have decorated it in a way that makes one feel right at home. The location of this apartment is one of its best features as we were within walking distance to everything. Four days was just not enough...we were so sad to leave but are already making plans to visit again!

    • 18 days of holiday bliss, the perfect vacation habitat. I returned to the US in good spirits and great shape due to my stay here. The apartment is spacious, well appointed, perfectly designed, and above all cheerful. The space lives as if it is twice its size - there is a place for everything. I especially loved the key ledge in the entry foyer and the antique but usable coat rack. Rosa has thought of everything: DVDs, coffee, provencal toiletries, WiFi, and wine. The flat is bright and inviting with its blend of modern and antique furniture. There is a place to dine, work if your dare, or just relax while you read, watch TV, or enjoy the company of your companion. I loved making coffee every morning in the efficient and fully equipped kitchen stocked with gourmet and modern kitchen appliances. Included are a coffee press, rapid boil hot water kettle, toaster, salad spinner, convection microwave, cheese grater, microwave dishes, mixing bowls, cutting board,...and the list goes on, then again, the landlady is a chef. While staying in Nice I also attended the cooking classes taught by Rosa. The commute to class was a breeze since Rosa holds her classes in the same building. One of my favorite conveniences in the apartment was having a washing machine in the bathroom and hanging my laundry "French" style out the apartment window. I took pictures. I enjoyed having the large window open letting the cacophony of Old Town sounds waft into the apartment during the day and the night. You are high enough to appreciate the ambiance but can close the window and have complete silence when you want. The apartment seems to be in walking distance to everything. Armed with guidebooks and a list of suggested dining and shopping spots supplied by Rosa, I was never at a lost for something to do. For those who just want to relax, the beach is a short stroll from the apartment through the famous markets and pass hundreds of shops and restaurants. This is the best location as the tram, bus, and train stations are all within walking distance. The area is safe since there is loads of pedestrian traffic well into the night. As a single woman I felt very secure returning home at midnight. After a day out, I looked forward to a refreshing bath in the deep tub and snuggling under the lush duvet. I am planning my return trip for next year. This, my fellow travelers, is the ideal place to vacation like a pampered local.
