Tinker's Toy is an oceanside house in Waves on Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks of NC, seven houses from the oceanfront. Waves is a small, unspoiled village not far from Nags Head. The beaches are wide and are never crowded, perfect for families, fishing, surfing, sailing, etc.
Tinker's Toy has 3 bedrooms, sleeping 8, one a master with a queen bed, another with a queen bed and a third with 2 sets of bunk beds. All rooms are colorfully and thematically decorated, with attention to detail (i.e., hairdryers in the bathrooms, artwork in all rooms). There are 2 full and 1 half ceramic-tiled bathrooms, 4 ceiling fans, two large great rooms, a spacious dining room with a cathedral ceiling, a fireplace, and a wet bar. The first level has a large deck, with ample deck furniture; the second level has built-in seating and a spacious hot tub, facing the ocean. A well-equipped kitchen includes a refrigerator with icemaker, stove, dishwasher, microwave, many cooking gadgets and ample dishes, serving pieces, and cookware, and cookbook library. There are several other nice touches: wireless internet, a highchair, DVD library, 4 TVs and DVDs, a mini fridge in the upstairs wet bar, a fish cleaning table, a charcoal grill, washer and dryer, and an answering machine. The house sits on a 1/4 acre lot, so it is very private, on a quiet street. There are ocean and sound views from the second level deck and sound views from the first level deck, as well.

Tinker's Toy was a wonderful experience--lots of space indoors and out, designed for comfort and relaxation, decorated beautifully, sparkling clean, and convenient location. Kitchen has everything you could need or want. The short walk to the the beach and easy shore access was ideal. I'd recommend the property. If relaxation and comfort are important, this is the place! We enjoyed one local restaurant and several shops including a lovely art center. The owners seemed to genuinely care about my comfort and had provided information about local opportunities. I thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub on the top deck!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

I've spent time the past couple of summers at Tinker's Toy in Waves, OBX. It is a beautiful, cozy and conveniently located beach house on one of the most gorgeous coast lines to visit on the East Coast. The house easily has the most well-equipped kitchen I've had the privilege of using on vacations to the beach. And while I do enjoy going out to eat a night or two during vacation, being able to cook wonderful meals without being required to bring kitchenware is a wonderful amenity. The house has a hot tub on the top deck with an amazing view. The walk to the beach is only about 200 yards. I've been to a number of different beach houses over the years, from 10-bedroom giants to small two-bedroom homes and this is one of the best bargains with invaluable amenities you're going to find. I highly recommend Tinker's Toy for your next vacation to the Outer Banks.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

About the owner: We are a retired couple (from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC), moved to Elizabeth City, NC, in 2004, and bought an historic home to restore. After restoring the house, it is now a bed and breakfast -- the Grice-Fearing House B&B, offering two suites with Jacuzzis. We often travel to our beach house in Waves, NC -- Tinker's Toy -- to relax and unwind. We have two grown sons, one an artist, and the other a musician. We are active in local committees, particularly interested in historic preservation activities.
Why the Owner Chose Waves:
The Outer Banks has wonderful beaches. Waves is a small village on Hatteras Island, which is still unspoiled and very serene. The beaches are very wide and are never crowded. Additionally, the lots on which houses are built are large (1/4 acre), so there is a lot of privacy. Ocean temps are warm even in early fall months. Waves has shops, restaurants, and outdoor activities to offer -- it's a small, charming village.

Tinker's Toy is a great place to unwind and relax and enjoy the beach. Offering ocean and sound views on the second level, and sound views on the first level, it offers two great rooms for guests to spread out -- it is a spacious house. There are 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and many amenities, including a hot tub, fireplace, books and DVDs, 4 TVs with DVDs, 4 ceiling fans, central AC and heat, a wet bar, a fish cleaning table, a highchair, wireless internet, and an answering machine. Washer/dryer, all appliances, of course. Very well decorated. Because we love to cook, the kitchen is extremely well equipped, even boasting a cookbook library! Our favorite activity (besides going to the beach) is relaxing in the hot tub, under the stars!
