Resting atop an enchanting Medieval village and right next to a pristine castle lies La Maisonnette du Coteau. Recently renovated, this exquisite cottage offers numerous luxuries, while maintaining a deep respect for it's Medieval roots.
Rest here while you experience a taste of a French countryside steeped in history and culture. Not only will you enjoy the beauty, comfort, and luxurious ammenities at La Maisonnette, but you'll also appreciate Beynac's delicious restaurants, amazing concerts, beautiful walks, stunning art galleries, and one of France's most well-preserved castles within minutes.
When you stay at La Maisonnette, you'll understand why it's one of the most photographed homes in the village, and on several of the printed postcards you'll find around town. Its prominent place atop the Cliffside village of Beynac-et-Cazenac affords its guests breathtaking views of the Dordogne River, the entire valley, and of the village. Enjoy a dinner or lunch outside on the terrace overlooking the canoes dotting the river, or take a bath in a claw foot tub while you gaze out across the Valley of the Five Chateau. Now that's what we call relaxing!
Inside the home you'll find:
* gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances including a sub-zero freezer, two refrigerator drawers, and a dishwasher; the highlight of the kitchen is the gourmet La Canche gas stove--a stove that professional cooks in Europe use throughout France
* beautifully restored wood beams in every living space
* a mix of modern and antique furnishings, including a few pieces that are hundreds of years old
* thick, perfectly restored stone walls
* unique window shapes and ornate iron work on the exterior
* romantic master suite with queen-size bed and a private bathroom, including a claw foot tub overlooking the Dordogne Valley.
* 2 additional guest rooms, one featuring another queen-size bed with both antique and modern furnishings; another with two twin beds; both are lovely and very comfortable
* Sleeps 5-6 people
* Antique tile floor on the mail level, recently refurbished hardwood floors throughout the remainder of the cottage
* Modern bathroom on the second level, including a luxurious shower cabin and a towel warmer; private views of the nearby hillside as well
* relaxing TV/movie room where a TV, DVD player and leather sofa await
* both a washer and a dryer on the premises
* gorgeous, mature, terraced gardens overlooking the Dordogne River Valley.
Let me share a little more about the glorious town of Beynac and while this is the ideal location for your vacation...whether you arrive from the East or from the West, stunning views of the town invite you as you approach this Medieval cliffside town. You will find your breath taken away as you observe the little golden buildings with their antique tile roofs nestled amongst each other as they overlook the lovely river Dordogne. Like us, you'll be shocked that such a lovely place even exists! It will feel surreal as you spend your days enjoying all the Dordogne has to offer. There will be no question in your mind as to why Beynac is listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France)
La Maisonnette is the ideal landing pad for visiting the other small, picturesque villages in the area, and for enjoying other sights as well. Make sure you visit the Marqueyssac Gardens, the Lascaux Caves (oldest art on the earth), the famed outdoor market in nearby Sarlat, the 5 chateau within 5 minutes of Beynac, and take a canoe or boat ride down the river for unexpected and amazing views. And don't forget to take a tour of the castle you'll be staying right next to (the windows of La Maisonnette look out upon the old castle walls and the old city walls as well); the Chateau of Beynac is one of the best preserved in France. You'll feel as if you stepped back to the 12th century!

Why the Owner Chose Beynac-et-Cazenac
After falling in love with Beynac, we decided to check out a few properties in the area. Properties in this coveted Medieval village are rarely on the market and if they are, it's not for long. When we saw this little cottage nestled next to an amazing castle, we thought, "this is our chance!" Cottages next to castles aren't exactly the norm :) We sacrificed much and put our hearts and souls into making this a vacation property you'll want to return to over and over.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
There are many unique aspects to La Maisonnette, let me name a few: the luxury kitchen, the washer AND dryer, the stunning views, the mature gardens, air conditioning, and well-designed spaces. If you choose to stay at La Maisonnette du Coteau, this will likely be the only time in your entire life that your view from the cottage includes a majestic river, a Medieval village and most importantly, a 14th century castle. Yes, as you walk out the door of La Maisonnette, you find yourself staring directly at the old castle walls.
Owner's Map of Beynac-et-Cazenac
Over the past 15 years, we've created several reasons (and sometimes excuses!) to visit France. For us, France offers the best of everything we want in a vacation--culture, art, breathtaking scenery, excellent cuisine, history, etc. When we first visited Beynac, we felt as if we stepped into some sort of fairy tale--something we'd never experienced, even in France, up till this point. The Dordogne region, more specifically Beynac, is the perfect location for any traveler wanting to experience the best of France. Renovating this historic cottage was one of the most difficult, yet most rewarding "adventures" we've ever taken and we hope you enjoy the fruits of our labors here at La Maisonnette du Coteau.

Wow! My husband and I stayed here for nine days in October/November 2011, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The booking process was very easy and the owners very professional, and coordinating with the property manager who is local was easy as well. We knew we were staying somewhere special from the photos online, but nothing can do this beautiful home justice. Located directly next to the Chateau Beynac, the home is wonderfully appointed with modern appliances and amenities but stays true to the original architecture of the home. We enjoyed cooking meals, playing many of the great games provided, watching DVDs from their collection, and having coffee by the fire. The town of Beynac-et-Cazenac is not to be forgotten, as it is truly something out of a fairytale. If you stay over a weekend, be sure to visit the market in Sarlat on Saturday. It's truly a gem. The fall is also a time not to be missed in this region - the weather was perfect! Thank you, Ben and Stephanie! What a treat to stay at La Maisonnette. We cannot wait to come back!

It's hard to choose what's most interesting: the "cottage," the town or the area. All are great...and visiting "off-season" gives you free rein to choose each day as the spirits move you. We brought two young grandkids (2 and 4), and while they bear constant watching (hard stairs and steep cliffs) Sir Samuel and Lady Jane were soon decked out in Medieval regalia having the time of their lives. Try Fall on the Dordogne: cool air, hot sun burning off the morning mist, no traffic/no waiting, magnificent sunsets as balloons drift by the patio, a roaring fire in the fireplace...

i was lucky enough to be a guest at la maisonette, a wonderfully curating home.Ben and Stephanie renovated this charming home with all that you would wish for on a holiday, yet they did nothing that would compromise the history of this very special place. waking up at la maisonette one might think they were still dreaming, as you stare out of the second floor terrace overlooking the castle and the village of Beynac, you might just think you are in heaven. going to a local market and boulangerie, preparing a meal in the loveliest kitchen, then dining on the backyard terrace surrounded with lime, quince and palms trees is magical. night time is lovely with the castle and star filled sky makes this a wonderful experience the kind that will surely have you pinching yourself to make sure it is real, and it is that and more.

Just got back from our France trip, which started with a very enjoyable one week stay at La Maisonette. The house was just as represented by the web site and photos, and the practical information provided by the owners was top notch. To have such a modern and functional house in an historic setting is a real treat. Ben, his local agent Sarissa, and even the cleaning lady, Martine, were always responsive and helpful. We also enjoyed Beynac as a base for visiting the Dordogne. With so much to do in the immediate vicinity, I believe that our longest drive during the week was a trip to Les Eyzies to see Font du Gaume. Starting the rental period on a Friday, as opposed to the customary French rental period starting on Saturday, also lets you enjoy the Saturday morning market in Sarlat. I feel like we got a great deal on the place, and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

For our first time visiting France, we decided to head straight for one of the culinary capitals of the country, the Dordogne. Fresh strawberries, white asparagus, foie gras and duck confit were some of the local highlights we couldn't get enough of. Staying in Beynac is probably the best place to explore the area, and we couldn't have found a better place than La Maisonette! Walking down the cobblestone path to the cottage, we immediately recognized it from the pictures. We knew we were in a special place when we opened the door in front of a tourist taking a picture of the cottage. We ate fresh heirloom tomato and mozzarella caprese with local walnut oil on the rose garden patio, with passersby wishing us, "Bon apettit." We couldn't have had a more relaxing, yet invigorating introduction to France. Thank you again, Ben and Stephanie!

We just returned from our stay at La Maisonette and had an incredible time. The house is inviting, impeccable, absolutely charming. The beds were comfy and the kitchen was a treat to use. The owners supplied us before our trip with lots of helpful advice about area activities. The highlights of our stay were touring the Beynac castle (literally next door) as well as the Font-de-Gaume ancient cave paintings. We stayed just before the regular tourist season officially began, which meant that many of the restaurants and businesses around were closed. It made for a quiet stay and we were able to prepare some delicious meals in the gourmet kitchen instead of eating out. I cannot recommend this property enough. After reading all of the other reviews, it would be hard for our stay to have exceeded my expectations, but it did in every way.

We stayed at this exceptional cottage for 5 nights over the 2010 Christmas period. The owners were extemely helpful when we contacted them to arrange our stay. They provided advice and a comprehensive guide to the cottage, Beynac and the surrounding area. They also helped us to arrange a wonderful cooking class to attend during our stay. All of our communications were answered promptly and in a way that gave us total confidence in making our arrangements. The cottage has been superbly and sympathetically restored. The owners have retained all of the historical features of the cottage while also providing modern facilities. The furnishings have been chosen carefully and show the owners' obvious decorating flair whilst being entirely complementary to the setting. The owners had kindly arranged for the heating to be turned on before our arrival so that the cottage would be warm. The cottage was immaculate on our arrival. A basket of food for the next breakfast was awaiting us. The cottage, and its surrounding garden and terraced areas, provided an enchanting home that we loved and were very sad to leave. The description and photographs of the cottage on this site, and the extremely positive reviews from previous guests, reflect accurately this superb cottage and its wonderful owners. We have no hesitation in recommending this cottage and its owners would not contemplate staying anywhere else on our next trip to this region. Andrew

At the risk of merely echoing descriptions or prior superlative reviews of La Maisonnette du Coteau… this place is, quite simply, fantastic! The idyllic locations, from the cottage, to the village of Beynac, to the overall setting of the region adorned with castles and wonderful historic towns along the Dordogne River, could not be more charming. If ever one should want to live just a bit of fantasy, this is one great choice... in any season! Ben and Stephanie provide a terrific Orientation Guide… complete with restaurant ideas and suggestions for activities and places to see. We parked just a stone’s throw from Chateau de Beynac. As we walked the short distance down a cobbled pathway along one flank of the castle, we approached the cottage with ever-widening grins as we struggled to absorb the splendor of the cottage in the shadow of the castle replete with the wonders of Beynac and the beauty of the Dordogne valley below. A wrought iron entry adorned with grape vine invited us to our home for ten wonderful days at the end of August. We became enamored immediately with La Maisonnette…from the attention to detail in renovation to the inviting outdoor patio. Throughout our stay we ate wonderful food, drank sumptuous, juicy wines, met great, friendly people, paddled the Dordogne, and visited fabulous sites, towns and markets. All are an easy drive through a splendid part of France – as yet unspoiled and still reflecting a calm, peaceful lifestyle. Enjoy it all to the fullest…we hope to return one day to recapture the charm this place has to offer. We especially miss the simple, yet wonderful, home cooking of Jean Luc at Le Donjon just a skip from La Maisonnette. Thanks once again to Ben and Stephanie… you have, indeed, found what is surely one of the most enchanting locations in France.

My husband and I stayed here for one week in March of 2010. This is the first time I've stayed at a VRBO property as a renter although I'm familiar with renting condos since we have rented ours in Hilton Head for the past 10 years. From a fellow property owner's perspective, this place is managed exceptionally. The staff that greets you is a charming and friendly couple who own a nearby hotel. The property itself is a magical place (in addition ot being newly renovated, very clean, and well-maintained. You really do live right beside an old castle, and the surroundings are truly out of a fairy tale. Pictures fail to capture the true beauty of this place. The free phone line to the US was also a nice benefit as well as the free internet. The village of Beynac and the surrounding villages are lovely. We visited an outdoor market almost everyday and enjoyed cooking in the chef's kitchen in the cottage. We were also able to visit the prehistoric caves as well as take a day trip to Bordeaux. If you do stay here, I highly recommend visiting one of the goose farms to learn about how they make foie gras, a specialty in this region. My husband and I were the only ones in the cottage, but the cottage can easily and comfortably fit 6. It's an ideal place for a family with children or a few couples on a getaway. We are definitely coming back to La Maisonette with friends and/or family. The owners are really pleasant to work with as well. They also provide a very helpful guide that suggests restaurants, activities and also practical things like where to go for necessities. I highly recommend this place.
