Taos house description
This is a wonderful old Taos adobe home. The original house (now bedroom #2) was once the home of a family of 9-kitchen and bath then were outdoors. It is thought to be 250+ years old and is considered an historical property. Like many Taos homes it was added to in the ensuing years.
This home is delightful for a couple. It is a spacious home which is unusual for an old adobe. The layout is perfect for a couple and is also suitable for a group stay and would be especially comfortable for two couples since the two good sized bedrooms each have full, private baths and are separated by the sunroom and great room. There is a double futon in the sunroom and another in the great room for additional guests. (Up to a total of 8) The house is cozy in the winter due to thick adobe walls, four kiva fireplaces and a very efficient gas heater. There is always a good supply of firewood under the carport. Summer is delightful and cool inside and great for outdoor living with a deck off master bedroom and a wonderful front flagstone patio with table and chairs, BBQ and outdoor fireplace. The house is furnished with interesting antiques. sculpture and original art. The kitchen is fully equipped and ready to produce those gourmet feasts or a quick snack for two. Bathroom #2 has a washer and dryer for those chores that call out even on vacation. The yard is fenced and well behaved dogs are welcome at a small additional fee.
The house has a wonderful, peaceful feeling and yet is only a few minutes from all Taos has to offer..good restaurants, shops including MY shop Red CatMelissiana. (www.redcatmelissiana.com),galleries, the Taos Pueblo and many great outdoor activities).

Excellent Taos stay
Excellent Taos stay
When we arrived for our 5 night stay at the Adobe, we felt we were walking into history with a sense of flair. Melissa has a keen eye for antiques and art. Our dogs were able to run all over the large backyard that was enclosed, and we weren't concerned about them damaging anything. The kitchen was well supplied, and we enjoyed eating at the dining table. The house was easy to reach from downtown Taos, and we were glad we could take the back road into town. Homes around the property were well spaced, and we never felt encroached upon by a neighbor. It felt very peaceful, and like we were in the country. As another positive, the wireless connection was great. My husband enjoyed fly fishing, and we did a driving trip back to Angel Fire an up to the Taos ski resort. Hikes were wonderful, and we were glad to be able to go out to some great restaurants. Loved it, and will be back!

Owner response: Hi Therese, thanks so much for your nice review. You used some of the words I always strive for in my vacation homes. This house truly does have a sense of history. The second bedroom was once the entire house 250 years ago so a whole lot of history has taken place there. Like many homes in Taos it was added on through the years, but I have always loved the flow of it. Thanks for admiring my "sense of flair". That's how I play. I love my sense of whimsy and am always so pleased when guests notice and comment. I have many guests who say they were still discovering things as they packed up to leave. 'A keen eye for antiques and art' is a fun comment too. I always furnish all my houses (now numbering five and #6 almost ready to go and all on Vrbo) with antiques, art and that sense of whimsy... I'm glad your dogs enjoyed the large fenced yard and that you enjoyed the function of the wireless internet connection. Even on vacation we need to stay connected. The property does have a nice sense of privacy with the fencing and location, but as you say is a quick trip to town on rural backroads. I have stayed at many vacation rentals myself so I always try to think of everything a guest at one of my homes might need. After all, who wants to buy a tin of curry powder for one dish so I endeavor to have spices, condiments, staples, coffee, tea etc. on hand. I'm a cook so I always say that if my kitchen doesn't have it, you probably eon't need it! I enjoyed meeting the two of you and your two dogs and do hope you return to Taos for another visit.
My husband and I loved this adobe and found it hard to leave each day and so easy to return to, to build a fire most nights and make dinner. I wasn't sure what other reviewers meant about its comfort and having every need attended to but really that's it...as if our every desire was anticipated in the kitchen, wood, kindling, matches, linens etc. it did not feel overused with miscellany but carefully thoughtfully provided. The pics don't do justice to the commodious style of this historic home. Wonderful! Great location not far from very historic areas. Thankyou Melissa

Owner response: Hi Margaret, thanks so much for your nice review. I am so glad you enjoyed my Taos home. I have stayed in many vacation rentals myself and spend time trying to anticipate the needs of the guests in all of my rentals. It is always nice to hear that I have succeeded. I love it when guests say the home was hard to leave each day and welcoming and inviting to return to each evening. That is just what a vacation should be if you ask me!
HISTORIC ADOBE WITH SOUL
HISTORIC ADOBE WITH SOUL
We stayed at this wonderful adobe for 8 days and loved every minute of being there. This charming adobe was perfectly suited for a couple and 2 singles...the layout ensured privacy but also the ability to spend time together inside and outside this wonderfully designed and artfully decorated authentic 200 plus year old adobe. The open floor plan of the great room & sun room coupled with the 2 private bedrooms made for a pleasing combination of openness as well as privacy. The second (Historic) bedroom has an aura of it's own, soothing to sleep in...quiet and solid...womblike and comforting with its own bathroom including a washer & dryer. The Kitchen with the island lit by early morning light was a wonderful start to the day and it had everything we needed to prepare meals. The kitchen coupled with the large dining table created a wonderfully comfortable and atmospheric space in which to enjoy a meal. The sun room was a wonderfully airy and light filled spot to hang out after a jam packed day in Taos or Santa Fe; a great spot to just relax and savor the experience of being in Ranchos. Our go-to space was the outdoor patio with the Kiva fireplace. In this great spot one can have morning coffee beside the glow and smell of a small fire, as well as enjoy the aroma of the junipers and watch the antics of the Magpies. The outdoor patio also became the locus of our end of the day ritual: watching the sky as the sunset and the moon rise, grilling dinner and dining outside, relaxing by the fire and discussing the days adventures as well as the adventures to come. Every day we looked forward to spending time on this very cozy and private patio. The location of this adobe allows one to drive the back roads to the Plaza, the Pueblo, Arroyo Secco and beyond, offering a true taste of rural Northern New Mexico. The ability to bypass all the traffic through town was an added bonus. Melissa, your generosity and kindness to our family and ability to put this historic adobe out into the world has been a blessing for us as well as others.

Owner response: Hi Donnarae, thank you so much for your glowing review. I loved this home from the first minute I saw it and it is so gratifying to share it with so many guest who have the chance to spend time in this wonderful home. Your visit was especially important to me since our first meeting and your story of your uncle living in this home for many years and because of this you now are a second home owner in Taos yourself since you had so many wonderful childhood memories of this home and of your uncle. I loved the stories of his time in this house too. Thank you for that I believe he is pleased that I bought his home. It has always had such a warm, welcoming feel to it. AND now I know the reason for the name of the road this house is on...
Warm Inviting Home with Taos Character
Warm Inviting Home with Taos Character
My husband and I stayed with another couple in Melissa's wonderful home. It was an authentic Taos experience. The home was inviting and so spacious. There was plenty of room for the two couples. She has the house stocked with everything you could possibly need. It was such a wonderful experience after having stayed at a five star Inn in town that was lacking in warmth and supplies. I would definitely return for another stay.

Feeling the culture and history of Taos
Feeling the culture and history of Taos
I am going to be very honest in this review(as I always am).My reservation, some how got mixed up at VRBO. When I contacted the owner, Melissa I had no idea that we were talking about a totally different property than I was seeing on the website. I finally figured it out when Melissa sent me directions and I goggled it and it was not in the location I thought I had booked. Melissa was so prompt with her response on every question I had and was very open about everything She said her house was great, so I decided to take a chance. I think there must have been some divine intervention in the whole deal. I was born in Santa Fe and ski and backpack often with my family. My sons and I were concerned but were very much pleased when we saw the house. We very much enjoyed Melissa house it has a great feel of local rustic culture in a totally up to date house. The decor was authentic and natural, without the trendy/tacky Santa Fe tourist art decor the seen in many of the rental properties. The house has the feel of a tasteful real persons home not a contrived over decorated magazine ad (awesome job Melissa. If you want a comfortable, warm, inviting environment to feel the real flavor of Taos this is the place to stay. We will be back for sure.

Owner response: Hi Bill, thanks for your review. I must say, that was a first to have VRBO scramble the numbers on a rental. Could have been a disaster for you, but I knew you would enjoy my house and looks like I nailed it. I love buying old adobes and fixing them up with my taste and sense of style and as you said and my reviews show, I have a lot of folks agreeing. Stay tuned since I am, as we speak, working on two houses I just bought--foreclosures on the same property, but I am confident I will make two silk purses out of these sows ears! My plan is to fix them up and decorate in my "Melissiana" style, put them on VRBO AND have them on the Home & Garden Tour summer 2014! Just to show what you can accomplish with a few bucks, some style and imagination! Such Fun!!! Must get back to scrapping, painting and planning...
We can't wait to return
We can't wait to return
Taos is a beautiful place to visit anytime of year, but with the mountains coated with snow, it was especially so. This was our second stay at Melissa's lovely historic home. It's location is close enough to town to make the restaurants, markets and other shops a quick trip, yet far enough away from the crowds at vacation time.Even though you are surrounded by old world charm, the house is surprisingly roomy with everything one needs to entertain. We have family in the area so we have been visiting for a number of years and have stayed at numerous homes and hotels, but we have found our new "home".

Owner response: Hi Karin, thanks so much for your nice review of my Taos home. I am so glad you like it and have returned for your second stay. Once again you left the house in beautiful condition. Always appreciated. I am sure I will see you again to visit that sweet little granddaughter. Do let me know your future plans as soon as you have them since my house in increasingly popular--due in part to past guests and my many positive reviews. Thanks again.
Xmas Adobe Solitude
Xmas Adobe Solitude
I have traveled to Taos four to six times a year for skiing, fishing, et cetera for years. I've stayed in many hotels and casitas in town. Finally, I've found the perfect retreat south of the hustle and bustle of town. Casa de Melissa is an amazingly serene getaway. We booked at Xmastime this year and a recent snow made for a magnificent arrival. The roomy "open-ness" of the upper bedroom and the living/kitchen area is an awesome surprise when opening the front door. The main/upper bedroom is spacious and attached private deck is perfect for lounging and vegging out without any disruption. The new gas log furnaces in all the rooms kept us all warm and cozy even when the temperature outside plummeted to 5 degrees! (We initially had trouble with one of the furnaces, but with a single phonecall Melissa had the problem remedied within an hour. Awesome customer service!) 3 kiva fireplaces in various rooms that add some warmth and ambiance. The entire home was very clean and tidy, and all the amenities were perfect for my family of 6 -- full kitchen with an island, large dining table, two full baths, washer/drier, outdoor grill and patio with fire pit... the list goes on. We grilled out one evening, and cooked dinner in the kitchen another night, and we found everything we needed to prepare both meals -- cookware, tongs, spatulas, skillets... Both bathrooms are up to date, individually heated, plumbing works great, and very well kept. Showers had great pressure and had plenty of hot water. We utilized both convertible beds. Our boys said they were very comfy and slept great on them. We found extra blankets and pillows in the antique chests throughout the home. Staying south of town is so quiet and tranquil. We reveled in the solitude. There are homes all around, but somehow it doesn't feel like it at all. It's a quiet neighborhood, and the trees and taller fence surrounding the property provide a cozy atmosphere, creating more privacy than you might expect. My family sat around the crackling fire on the patio one evening after dinner and told stories about the day's skiing adventures, making for a soothing segue to bedtime. Parking is private and felt very safe. We couldn't utilize the covered parking because of our ski racks, but it's nice to know it's there. Overall we loved the home and cannot wait to return.

Melissa, Just a note to thank you for the stay in your beautiful house. We loved the beautiful old Adobe home, it is beautifuly decorated and has all the amenities of home. There was plenty of room for our party of four, and we couldn't have been more comfortable. The sense of history envelops the house, and we loved having a fire in the fireplace on the porch in the evenings and enjoying the incredible night sky. We would definitly recommend this rental property to family and friends.

We loved staying in your wonderful house. I loved your gardens, both flower and vegetable. We enjoyed three meals from your vegetable garden and each was such a treat. I picked apples off the ground and will make jelly when I go home. I'll send you some. Our week in your home was everything we could have asked for and more. You have created a paradise. Thank you for sharing it!

So Glad We Found It!
So Glad We Found It!
Our weekend in this home was exactly what we were looking for! This authentic adobe home was quiet, private and well appointed. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to stay in all weekend. The private fenced in yard was delightful to sit under a tree for coffee in the morning, with views of the mountains in the distance, and to view the stars at night. The natural high desert vegetation added to the Taos flavor of this home. We loved the brass bed in the master bedroom; romantic and cozy comfortable. And the reasonable rate of thie property can not be beat. We are already thinking about our return!! Thank you, Melissa!

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: I was a California landscaper who wanted a simpler life so I moved to Taos. I fell in love with an old adobe home by the river and bought it. Then I fell in love with another old adobe and bought it for a vacation rental. I have a shop in downtown Taos Red Cat Melissiana 110 Dona Luz in the Guadelupe Plaza just behind the main Plaza. It is very 'Taos Eclectic' and must be seen to be believed...
Why the Owner Chose Taos:
I love old adobe homes. They have such substance, personality and character This house has a cozy and welcoming feeling that everyone who has stayed here comments on and yet for an old adobe is amazingly spacious. The house has a private enclosed yard, is nicely landscaped (next project big container plants and an irrigation system) and great mountain views.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This home has the charm of an old adobe (original room 250 years+) but has all the modern amenities we expect. It is in a quiet location, yet only minutes from all Taos has of offer (i.e. restaurants, galleries, the pueblo and outdoor adventures) I love the deck for sunsets and the outdoor patio, the 4 kiva fireplaces (each bedroom, great room and sunroom) the wood and brick floors and the 46 (count them!) overhead vigas as well as the 14' thick walls. Owner lives 5 minutes away to answer any questions or provide information.
