For 30 miles in most directions, you will be able to see whatever the light and sky are doing – always changing other worldly mountain views in a sea of air, morning mist rising from the river valleys below, the sunrise play of light and shadow on 9 ridges to the West, amazing sunsets – and continuous breeze.
This house is our home but we would like to turn it over to you to enjoy while we travel. We designed and built the house as a bright, airy and open place to enjoy the magical site. It is facing SW on the NW end of a finger ridge at elevation 3200’ overlooking the valley of the headwaters of the East Fork French Broad River in a quiet secluded 12.5 acre setting with paved roads right to the end of our easy driveway.
The neighborhood is surrounded by scores of thousands of acres of protected lands - lands in strong private hands or public lands such as Caesar’s Head State Park, Jones Gap State Park, duPont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and Gorges State Park – each only a short drive, - as is the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The house features:
o More than 3000 sq ft of living area on three levels.
o More than 1500 sq ft of porch and patio on two levels.
o Many large windows and tall glass doors for maximum light and air.
o The AC has not been desirable but for one week in three summers.
o There is a well tended flower and kitchen garden with herbs and seasonal vegetables with a gardener provided. Cleaning service is provided once a week.
o No pets. There are two cats in the yard, friendly, but on guard to keep away varmints.
The main floor kitchen, great room (open to upper level roof line ceiling), and master bedroom all open to a wrap around 12 foot deep 750 sq. ft. porch for dining, comfortable seating and fair weather sleeping – ideal for families and entertaining. The large master suite includes a tile shower, double sinks, and walk in closet. The kitchen is fitted with black honed granite counter tops, farm-house (fire clay apron) sink, stainless steel appliances, gas cook top, electric oven and walk-in pantry. The entry hall incorporates a coat closet and ½ bath powder room. The dining table seats 8 with additional seating at kitchen snack bar and on the porch.
The lower level includes family room with TV and game table, and a bedroom with twin beds each open to 750 sq. ft. flagstone terrace; and a full bath. The laundry room includes washer, dryer and utility sink.
The top level consists of one queen bedroom, one twin bedroom and a full bath each opening to a large loft library/sitting area with clerestory windows and the great room below.
Music, arts and dining in Brevard (15 minutes) and Asheville (45 minutes) are terrific. We are 45 minutes from Greenville SC, 2 hours from Charlotte NC and 3 hours from Atlanta.

Tanne and I were born and raised in the SC low country. Escaping the summer heat by traveling to the mountains of WNC was something we always enjoyed. We moved to this area when Tanne retired after 28 years as a teacher. I am still working as a funding compliance analyst for public school districts.
The Unique Benefits of this House
We have been coming to this area almost our entire lives (summer camp, family vacations, visits to relatives) and have always thought this country was magical. Since we have located here full time we have been amazed by the atmosphere of friendship among the residents.
The easy access to music of all types, river trips, fly fishing, hiking and bicycling is awesome. The best is enjoying friends (or solitude) with the views from the porch.
