Location: West Hyannisport, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA (Central Cape Cod and 1 Hour from Boston by Car)

Accommodations:  House, 5 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 4 Baths (Sleeps 10-12)

This 5 bedroom home sits 100 steps from a private beach on Craigville Bay, considered one of the finest bathing beaches on the Cape because its warm waters and calm surf. The property is 10 minutes from Hyannis, which is a hub of activity in the summer and provides shopping, movies, restaurants, spa treatments and other conveniences.

Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are visible on clear days and may be reached in a couple of hours from the nearby ferry in Hyannis. Fishing off the beach for striped bass and bluefish can be very productive in season, shells and sea life are plentiful and whale watching is excellent from nearby Barnstable Harbor. Sailing, windsurfing and power boating are all available nearby (Craigville beach has a sandy bottom that is not suitable for mooring overnight.) Cape Cod has a rich history from the 1600's and local museums are plentiful. The Cape Cod Melody Tent - just 10 minutes away - is a major entertainment venue.

Because West Hyannisport is centrally located on Cape Cod, it's easy to reach all Cape attractions on day trips, including museums, summer theatre, hiking, historical monuments, whale watching, and sports of all varieties.

The Blue Shutters offers a taste of historic, unspoiled Cape Cod. This property has stayed in the owner's family since its construction in 1904 and retains the 'away from it all' character that was so important to Victorian era sensibilities: peace, quiet, fresh air and leisure pursuits such as reading, card games, jigsaw puzzles and arts and crafts. The house includes a TV and cable service, but guests are encouraged to 'tune out' and make use of the stack of board games, decks of cards, paper and pencils, books and beach toys they'll find around the house. The property is furnished with a mix of antiques and casual beach furniture and although the house is clean and all typical amenities are available (microwave, blender, ice maker, etc.) the owners have kept the house as casual and reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century get-away as possible. Creaky floorboards included free of charge. Hardwood floors and washable rugs create a low-allergen environment. The sleeping porch has cots for overnights.

The property includes a clay tennis court that is one of the few of its type still remaining. Steps away through the woods, the court belongs to the family but is shared with neighbors and reservations are made to ensure everyone's convenience. The court gets only light use and has lots of availability. 2 child's tennis racquets are available but serious players should bring their rackets.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1904

I grew up spending summers in The Blue Shutters, as did my own mother and my children. My grandmother, Margie Risk, grew up spending summers at the house at the end of the lane, which her father built in the 1890's. When she married an architect, Benjamin Vroom White, he designed and built The Blue Shutters for her in 1904 at the top of the hill.

Why the Owner Chose West Hyannisport

The Blue Shutters has been in our family since it was constructed in 1904. In those days, houses were named and street addresses were irrelevant. A windmill stood on the other side of the lane which provided water for the group of houses on the lane; it was called The Lonelyville Water Company. Although West Hyannisport can no longer be called Lonelyville, it still retains its turn-of-the-century charm.

The Unique Benefits of this House

Spacious rooms allow your family to spread out and relax. Massive trees shade the property and provide habitat for chickadees, cardinals, goldfinches, hairy woodpeckers, finches and doves, while the screened porch and sleeping porch catch the sea breeze and a large yard provides plenty of space for play. We have chipmunks year round and fireflies in July. If you are looking for a quiet retreat with character and charm that is steps away from beach and tennis, this is one of very few of its kind on the rental market.
