This 3000-square-foot, five-level house was originally designed and built by its inspired architect for his own home. The views of ocean, pool and gardens are rivaled by its interior views -- of open-beam ceilings, wide passageways, and big, open rooms bathed in natural light from many windows and skylights. Decorated in a whimsical, original, uncluttered style by its owners, the property invites you to breathe, rest, dream, laugh and play.
Two full suites are set at the top of the house, each with ocean views, a full bath and a large dressing room. The master suite has a king bed, full softabed, fireplace and private balcony; the guest suite has a queen bed and twin Murphy bed. A smaller bedroom downstairs offers two twin beds, and french doors to its own small patio. A ladder loft at the top of the house, with three twin beds, serves as a fourth sleeping room for kids.
Indoors, you can splash and feast in the big kitchen, equipped with a six-burner, two-oven Wolf industrial range, large prep island, and a woodburning fireplace for toasted desserts. Entertain in the big living room, equipped with its own grown-up sized, ocean-view swing, whose career passes through the (open!) double french doors to the pool. Or play in the family room with its fully stocked arts-and-crafts area, twin daybed, and large-screen TV with DVD library. Or retreat upstairs to one of the very private suites.
Outdoors, there's grilling and napping in the kitchen garden, lounging on the sundeck, gathering for stories and s'mores round the firepit, splashing and lap-swimming in the pool, and soaking in the spa. Oh … and if you ever decide to venture OFF the property, Del Mar's best beaches, parks, shopping and dining are right down the hill.

We're Todd and Marna. (That's Marna in the picture, but Todd looks a lot like dog on the left.) Todd is a multimedia software designer, and Marna is a special ed teacher and artist whose warm and whimsical pieces decorate the property. We purchased this inspiring house in 2008 and loved it immediately for its open, peaceful and playful design, and its dramatic views, three fireplaces, pool and spa. Del Mar is a special town with a casual local vibe but with excellence and taste all around.

Perfect house for us! We enjoyed every minute of our time at the Del Mar house. Our family came from Boston to spend some time with our new baby. The house was spacious, clean, well-stocked with everything we could need and more. The older kids loved the pool so much they didn't even ask to go to the beach. The owners were wonderful from communication to instructions for everything in the house. We will definitely try to rent this place again with a large group. As usual, we ended up hanging out in the kitchen. I would LOVE to take that stove home. Lots of meals, laughs, and memories made. Thanks!

Totally Great Experience overall! We all loved this house, the kids loved the loft and all the books. They were never bored! They enjoyed the art room with toys and art supplies, great movie collection and lots of reading material to the pool and spa! Attention to detail from the owner Todd, very friendly and accomodating! Del Mar is a magical place. All ages would love this house, it is stocked with everything you need! We will be back.

We cannot say enough good words about our recent 10 day stay. The house is truly magical for kids and adults alike. We would recommend this house to anyone looking to spend time in Del Mar. Every visitor that arrived, and we had quite some from del mar, walked away saying what a spectacular place It is perfectly located close to beach, restaurants and stores and most importantly the house is complete with all the household goods that are often lacking in vacation rental homes. The owners (Todd and Marna) go out of their way to help make your stay completly hassle free and have done a great proactive job in answering many of the questions that renters have when entering a house in an easy to understand manual. We had not one issue with anything during our stay For our kids the pool, creativity room (filled with arts and crafts supplies), Vince and Nancy (resident turtles), books and dvd collections provided entertainment when not at the beach or sight-seeing and the Loft provided the perfect retreat after a long day in the sun. For adults, the back deck staring at the Pacific in the evenings with a fire pit, the front outside seating in the morning and the balcony off the master, pool and jacuzzi are for adult serenity. The rooms are complete as pictured and although we didnt take full advantage (we had max 8 and could have doubled) are able to comfortably accomodate a large group as advertised. We drove to the beach where parking at Torrey Pines and 15th-22nd street was much easier than we ever anticipated (note we have kids 8,3 and 1). If our young ones were a little older we could also walk. In summary, our kids are asking when we can come back to see Vince and Nancy and we adults loved it so we will be returning visitors which ultimately is the best indicator of how much we enjoyed our stay. Counting down to summer 2012.

We have rented homes all over the world. This was our best rental experience. The owners of this property are two of the nicest people we have ever met. They are absolutely honest and helpful. We stayed for a month and even got to feed their pet tortoises. We had family in all the time, and one night the entire extended familywas comfortably accommodated. The kids LOVED the loft. The house has wonderful, with contemporary art touches all around. The beds are all very comfortable. It is quiet at night. The pool and spa are tended to very carefully. They love dogs and our Labradoodle, Tess, loved their home. The kitchen is to die for (I do all the cooking.) It is close to everything. Walk downtown, shopping center and restaurants, off street parking. It is ten minutes to the race track and the beach is even closer. Off street parking, WiFi works great and from the back patio you can watch the sunsets from one of the highest points in town. We spent a month, but any length of time would be very enjoyable. This place is a real find, and the owners will treat you like old friends.

The property is like a resort getaway. There is plenty of space for everyone to find a little privacy, and plenty of large areas to accomodate the whole group to gather. The furnishings and decor add an almost museum like element, and spark everyone's interest, if you take the time to notice! The owners are more than helpful, and made our stay very comfortable.

When my husband and I decided to get married in San Diego I wanted to find a house to stay in that fit our personalities, because our guests would be staying with us, photos would be taken there, and possibly even the wedding itself depending on the weather. I fell in love with this home the second I saw it, and fell in love with the owners as well. You can tell they love their home and it shows in every nook and cranny of every room. As guests arrived and we assigned them rooms - everyone was comfy and happy. It both feels like a home and a magical adventure at once. It was the perfect setting for our very lovely wedding and I can't wait to go back for future anniversaries.

Dad - "Kid's, what was your favorite part of our San Diego vacation?" Kids - "The HOUSE!!!" It was great. The kids had a blast and enjoyed the house more than Seaworld, the SD Zoo, Legoland, the beach, or Balboa Park. The house was perfect for Mom and Dad too. It had plenty of room for us to get quiet time away from the kids yet still keep one eye on them. Todd was a really nice and interesting guy. My wife and I really enjoyed our conversations with him.

We loved our stay at this beautiful, unique house. We were very comfortable, with every detail thought of and provided. Our kids loved the turtles, indoor swing and pool/spa! The owners are friendly and so easy to work with; somehow attentive and allowing privacy at the same time. This will always be our first choice when we travel to San Diego and I can recommend it without hesitation to anyone.
