Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1994

I am an entrepreneur leveraging the broadband internet to near shore software research & development opportunities to the ingenious talent in Puerto Rico. I was born & raised in Puerto Rico, then lived in California for 12+ years, before returning home.

Why the Owner Chose San Juan

In a word, Old San Juan. Well, that is three words. Old San Juan is where everyone who lives in Puerto Rico wants to live! An opportunity arose to purchase the apartment, so I moved forward...it was a great deal. I lived in California at the time, so I rented it on a monthly basis. When I moved to Puerto Rico, I completely refurbished it, lived in it, and am now making it available to vacationers. Old San Juan is the 2nd oldest city in the Western Hemisphere; it has a wire array of restaurants, a hopping nightlife, neighbors of all ages and economic circumstances, a treasure-trove of history, the El Morro's open fields by the ocean, art galleries, concerts, and a real community feel. The place is for walkers and it is alive!

The Unique Benefits of this Apartment

I love walking everywhere I want to go when I stay at the apartment; there is no need for a car. As mentioned earlier, there is a wide array of activities in Old San Juan. But it is not all about Old San Juan...it is about being in Puerto Rico an enjoying the bioluminescent bay, the salsa, the sunny beaches, the snorkeling, the rum, and the human warmth...in my case that of my family as well. The apartment itself is right on Calle San Sebastian, the heart of Old San Juan's nightlife, so there is every reason to enjoy the night!

Great Location; So-So Accommodation

Overall, the apartment is very well located, clean, and the caretaker was friendly and very helpful. There appeared to be little effort to make the apartment a comfortable place to stay – something we’ve come to expect after other experiences with VRBO apartments – and in fact, many basic features were lacking. We’re pretty easy going travelers who spend most of our time outside of the apartment – this apartment pushed us to spend even more time out. To begin, though, the best aspect of the apartment can’t be overstated - it’s central location in Old San Juan. We were never more than a five minute walk to El Morro, San Cristobal, and many great restaurants and cafes. The neighborhood felt safe, and was generally quiet, except for later in the night (11pm -2am) when the bar across the street got going. The apartment is on the ground level, with the main door-sized window facing right onto the street. This either makes for interesting people watching, or a feeling of lack of privacy, depending on your personality. The interior of the apartment was disappointing. It was clean and simple, but lacked many basic features that one would expect, regardless of rental rate, such as a usable couch, decent lighting, and a hot shower. The couch was in disrepair and stained – enough of the sectional’s “sections” were broken that my wife and I could not sit side by side. The kitchen lacked a reasonable set of glasses, dishware and utensils – it was sort of a hodge-podge of whatever had been left around. The lighting was bare bones throughout the apartment, making reading difficult and spending time awake in the apartment less inviting. The bedroom is like a dimly lit cave. The bed was OK, and about what you expect in a 2 star hotel. The room had an a/c unit that managed to slightly cool the room from ~85 degrees to maybe 80. However, the unit made sufficient noise that we could not sleep comfortably with it on. I think this would be a much bigger issue when the temperature gets into the 90’s. The bathroom had some nicer tile work that appeared to be recently done, but the water temperature never passed luke warm. Given the lower water temperature, the lack of shower pressure wasn’t that big of a deal - like showering in a campground, where you get wet, soap up, and rinse off as quickly as you can. Overall, we paid the going rate for a one-bedroom apartment in Old San Juan, and believe we significantly overpaid for the value we received.

Fabulous time in San Juan

I stayed in this flat on vacation. I loved opening the wooden window to the street of cobblestone and activity. Staying on San Sebastian street was the perfect location. Master bedroon was dark and air conditioned. Kitchen and livingroom were perfect and full stocked. Owner and sister were easy to deal with and informative. I will be back!! went ziplining at Ecoquest if you are working on your bucket list! :) Fabulous time- Also close to forts!!! Highly recommend La Bombanera for pan de Mallorca- delicious pastry that is dunked down with coffee. I got my plain with butter, toasted, and sprinkled with cinnamon. ( 259 San Francisco St). Tantra is a cool place to get drinks after dinner. It has a sensual lounge seats with curtains and yummy assorted margaritas.

Convenient and very friendly

My wife and I stayed here for three days. It is away from the noise of the city but we could get there in a short time. El Morro was a five minute walk and it was four blocks to the restaurant district. I would gladly stay there again the next time I am in San Juan.

Great Stay and Close to It All

Guest: Tyler (Miami, FL)
Date of Stay: 01/20/11 Review Submitted: 01/26/11

Four of my colleagues and I just stayed for a long weekend at this apartment and really enjoyed the place. For someone who likes to be immersed in the street life, while also finding all the amenities you need away from home, then this is the place for you. Close to all the nightlife, bars, restaurants, plazas, El Morro, and the best part of the Old City - and away from most busy tourist streets-here you will find a great accommodation or base for exploring the city and its museums, the city wall, and other hot destinations of old san juan. It is also only a block away from the free Trolly for those who dont want to walk too much or for those who have kids. The apartment also has a great working kitchen with all the spices your heart would desire and huge fridge, a projector and screen if you need to watch movies, and a nice bathroom with tile. There is also a little courtyard, which is is great for outdoor breezes and natural ventilation. There can be some noise from the bars nearby but you dont hear it while your sleeping since the bedroom has AC and is in the back of the apartment. Its a bit small for four but for a couple and one or two kids its perfect. Would definitely come back and stay for a minimum of 5-6 nights since you cant see it all in just 4 days! I am considering bringing my wife and kid back with me the next time!

Comfortable apartment, great location!

Date of Stay: 08/06/10 Review Submitted: 08/12/10

My husband and I recently traveled to Puerto Rico for a vacation. We wanted to stay in Old San Juan, and this was a terrific apartment for us. Marcos was very easy to work with--he responded to our emails quickly and answered all of our questions before arrival. He was very friendly and professional. The apartment was very clean and comfortable. The renovated bathroom was very nice. We had easy access to everywhere in Old San Juan, and we enjoyed exploring the city. On-street parking was relatively easy to find. There was a grocery store a few blocks away, so we were able to save some money by preparing breakfast and some other meals in the kitchen. Puerto Rico is hot in the summer, and the air-conditioning in the bedroom was very welcome. I think the apartment is great for couples or families willing to sleep in the same room (the loft above the bed in the bedroom would sleep 2 more for a total of 4). I think it would be too hot to sleep in the loft in the living room, at least in the summer. I would definitely recommend this apartment to anyone wanting to stay in Old San Juan--we loved the space and the location.

Great Place, Great Location

If you're looking to experience Old San Juan without all of the typical tourist traps, this is the place that you're looking for. The place is nice, clean, affordable, and most importantly, in a great location. It's a couple of blocks from El Morro, a couple of blocks from all of the best shopping in Old San Juan, and a few steps (literally) away from some great local restaurants and bars. All of the locals are extremely friendly, hospitable, and great people. Marcos and his sister were extremely helpful and friendly, with lots of advice for the local hot spots. I highly recommend this rental. Enjoy!
