High House is an environmentally friendly vacation villa. All the electricity is renewable, non-polluting solar and wind power. Operating since the late 1970's on solar energy, the house has been practicing and upgrading their system for years.
The house has 3 sets of battery banks to store the energy. The roof is covered with solar panels that fill the battery banks to keep things running smooth 24 hours a day. The power from the batteries is inverted to provide 120 volt ac power. Two solar hot water heaters on the roof ensure hot showers and hot water in the kitchen.
High House collects rainwater off the roof that is stored in cisterns for all your water needs. A high tech water filtering system has been installed in line to ensure that water is safe for drinking. The house has low flush toilets installed with a composting system to help save on water usage.
The decks surrounding the house provide incredible views. The front deck looks out over Coral bay and beyond down the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Almost all the British Virgin Islands can be seen from this deck. The side deck has a 4 person hot tub also overlooking the bay with open skies to view the stars and constellations above.
Located at the top of the mountain and end of the road, High House offers privacy and peace. Facing East, the tradewinds provide a pleasant cooling breeze all day and the morning sunrise is an incredible sight. The shade in the late afternoon encourages drinks on the deck for vary colorful sunsets and awesome views. The gardens have many native plants, flowers, and fruit trees. Often, Hummingbirds and Bananaquits visit the feeder hanging from the roof.
As a back up to the solar power, a generator has been installed away from the house that automatically comes on in case of cloudy days or high energy use. It cannot be heard from the house. The house encompasses eco-friendly living with modern appliances and an island vibe.

High House is a wonderful place to be when you are on St. John. The view is spectacular and the breezes are refreshing. Sitting on the wrap around front porch overlooking Coral Bay is a relaxing place to be at any time of the day. The house is clean, comfortable and since the bedrooms are on opposite sides of the main room, it offers plenty of privacy for 2 couples. Martha and Peter are exceptional hosts - meeting us at the dock and offering wonderful suggestions for things to do and see. We loved the eco-friendly environment and it is a very peaceful place to be. I would highly recommend this property to anyone especially if you want privacy, comfort and a view that is the best on the island.

My wife and I came here for our honeymoon during July 2010. This house was perfect and fit everything that we wanted this vacation to be: fun, relaxing and a little bit secluded. We literally felt like we had moved to St. John for the week that we were there. We did some grocery shopping when we first arrived and cooked at the house on the grill outside a few nights. Martha and Peter were great hosts that met us at the ferry dock, got us setup in the house, helped us find things to do on the island and were available just down the street if we needed anything else. But the house itself was incredible: the sunrise views each morning over coral bay, the big kitchen for cooking, and the living space for just relaxing. And the central location was perfect since we tried to visit all ends of the island. By far, one of the best vacations we've ever had.

Our family of 4 stayed here last year. It was so wonderful we had to get one of our own. The house is clean and has everything you might need. The caretakers are extremely helpful in every way and helped make our stay comfortable, relaxing ,and carefree. One night when the power went out all over the island for a few hours we still had power so it never interupted our evening. The view is one of the best on the whole island and the hummingbirds loved the aloe in flower and the bananaquits were wonderful company. This house is private and quiet and so peaceful it was truely hard to leave. Twelve days was just barely long enough. We enjoyed walking the neighborhood in the early morning and the people were all friendly and welcoming. We have been coming to St. John for over 10 years and this was by far our favorite place to stay. ENJOY !

We have been returning to High House every year since 1996. It is a very clean and well maintained by the owners who live nearby and are helpful in answering our concerns and questions. It is located near the top of the mountain with 270 degree views from the deck, living room and both bedrooms. A perfect private get-away to kick back and relax.

We have returned to this property yearly since 1996. It is very clean and well maintained by the owners who live near by and are extremely helpful in answering all our questions. It is high up near the top of the mountain with fantastic 270 degree views. There is complete privacy for a real get away experience.

My husband, myself and our daughter travel from our blueberry farm in New England, to enjoy the fabulous views from this house. It has a view of East End in front of you with Tortola to the left and Coral Bay down to the right. We enjoy coffee on the deck in the morning and endless star gazing at night. It is always clean and comfy when we arrive, it is our home in St John whenever we visit. Martha and Peter are like neighbors, you can call if you need something. We usually buy groceries in town to do coffee and breakfast at the house, then pack the coolers from the pantry with sandwiches and drinks for a beach lunch (a beach is easy to find on the island) ! Eventually we come back to the house to shower and relax before heading out to dinner , we enjoy the local restaurants in Coral Bay. In Cruz Bay the local guide may help you choose a place to eat or walk around and you'll find something (we enjoy the BBQ across from the post office). We snorkel and dive which is easy to do in St John, you can rent snorkel and dive gear in Cruz Bay at the waterfront. The hiking is great with trails all over for short or all day long adventures. The views are endless from all over this island but nothing beats the sunrise from high house, WE love it!
