I stayed with my family for 2 weeks. From the first, the owner send us many information for this cottage, so I can go there without worrying. The cottage is very clean, is nicely furnished and well stocked with all you kitchen essentials. . I was happily surprised that the home was absolutely immaculate, the beds were comfortable. There was even the flowers on the dinning table when we arrived. What a nice touch! About the train, the noise was not problem for our family. It was really great for my family and me to stay there.

The Mt Shasta Retreat is a gem in the rough. The house is beautiful, the yard is beautiful, the location is convenient, the owners are very friendly and helpful, the neighborhood varies...but the TRAIN IS LOUD. If you like trains this is the place for you. They don't come too often during the day but they do run at night...which for us made it hard to sleep. My teenage son slept through it. But it literally sounds like the train is running through the middle of the house. Quite an experience if you've never had it. The tracks are directly across the street. There is no buffer... It is a pet friendly house but for us the yard was not...There is not a complete fence around the property and since we were there when it was hot we needed to keep the doors open so we had to put a baby gate at the back door and a makeshift gate on the porch. We could not let the dog out without supervision. There is a chain so that if you are outside you can chain your pet without worry. There are great bakeries and cafes nearby. Wonderful Italian restaurant Mike and Tony's, The Goat Head, Casa Ramos, to name a few... Definitely a great place....If you like TRAINS.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, pet owners.

Great location in Mt Shasta. We had four adults in our group and we enjoyed using the well stocked kitchen and outdoor space for BBQ and fire pit. We just needed to provide our own food! We actually enjoyed the train passing and would head out to the front porch to watch it go by. We loved the rocking chairs on the front porch and the nice sized dining table and chairs on the back porch. We will definitely be back!

Owner response: Thank you for your nice review. We agree it is a perfect place to share with another couple--a nice cozy atmosphere for togetherness but also lots of spaces on the porches and yard to have some individual quiet time, reading or napping! We too enjoy the experience of rushing out to count railway cars and see how many engines they are using.

We stayed at this home while attending a family reunion. It was a quick trip in on a Friday and out on Sunday. We were so pleased with the property, and wished we could have stayed longer to enjoy it! The home was very comfortable and had a wonderful outdoor area. The firepit outside was calling us, but unfortunatley, we did not get the chance to use it. My two kids loved to watch the trains go by...which was fun, but I will say it is very close to the house, and is very loud at all hours of the night. We did not mind it at all as we are all heavy sleepers, but if you are a light sleeper, than it may be an issue. The property owners were a delight to work with, and we will most certainly be returning!

Owner response: I'm sorry that you couldn't have spent more time outside at the cottage because it is definitely delightful to sit outside on the patio or Adirondack chairs in the cool evening breeze. I'm glad that your boys enjoyed the trains--you are right that they are unpredictable and can sometimes run different times in the day and night. That is why we always warn guests before they book, in case they are noise sensitive. We hope you will be able to return and stay longer next time.

This recently remodeled 2 bedroom cottage was a perfect resting place for our short stop in Mt. Shasta. Only blocks from the central downtown shopping/dining, and beautifully landscaped with a large fenced backyard. A covered patio with BBQ and furnishings as well as a fire pit for roasting snacks awaited us. The front porch is a new composite deck and a quaint place to rest and read, and the interior decor of natural hardwood floors, granite kitchen countertops, quality furnishings, and full media center made the living environment perfect. Many little details have been focused on to bring a rich and relaxing experience. The home is impeccably clean and well maintained. Though close to a main railway, the sound of the trains going by only distracted our social time for a few minutes in the evening while watching a movie or conversing. It actually became a point of conversation as we viewed the train passing. Upon leaving we spoke with the owner and felt very comfortable and respected. The owner takes pride in the home and equally wants guests to have a great experience. Local dining is fantastic, especially Trinity Cafe for fine dining, local bakery, Mexican dining, and several well stocked organic grocery establishments.

Owner response: We are so pleased that you had a great time in Mount Shasta and at the cottage. We do try very hard to make being here a wonderful vacation experience so feel very good when folks appreciate it and are so complimentary. You are certainly right about the innumerable things to do and places to go in the area. Even before we bought the cottage, it was one of our favorite places to explore. We hope you can return sometime.

Beautiful home! Mt Shasta was scorching hot while we were there, but the home is well shaded and stayed moderately cool throughout our stay. The kitchen is well equipped, and everything else you need is just a few minutes away in town. We had slight concerns about noise from the train prior to our visit, but it really turned out to be not an issue at all. The yard is a great place for an evening glass of wine! We'll definitely stay here again the next time our travels take us northbound.

You did manage to pick the hottest weekend of the summer so far (!), so I'm glad that you were still comfortable and were able to take advantage of the cooler evenings to sit out in the garden.

I booked this cabin on relatively short notice for a long weekend for me and my 3 kids, and we got up there from the south bay in about 5.5 hours. Its a great location and the Train brought back memories of my own from being a kid and being near tracks. It was beautiful weather and the cabin was clean and cozy, and we spent a good bit of time in and around it. The porch with patio furniture and grill was used multiple times as it was so beautiful outdoors. We look forward to coming again as it was a memorable trip for my family. Thanks again!

When we walked into the cottage for the first time, we immediately felt at home. Jeanne, the property manager, had left the front porch light on and turned up the heat for us. We were pleasantly surprised. The house was much lovelier than we had imagined. It was a perfect size for the four of us (kids ages 9 and 13) and our bulldog. We drove up in a bit of a snowstorm and Jeanne was very helpful and constantly communicating with us. The kids loved waking up to the backyard full of snow, and we spent the next morning making snowmen and having snowball fights. The house was fully stocked, and really comfortable. We loved how the house was decorated and all the special touches they added. The landscaping was also extremely tastefully done. We enjoyed sitting on the porch, with hot chocolate in hand, watching the train go by. The location of the house was convenient...close to downtown, and a short distance from the foot of Mount Shasta and other attractions like Lake Siskiyou and Castle Lake. Our recommendations for grabbing some great grub would be The Goad Tavern in Mount Shasta, and the Cornerstone Bakery in Dunsmuir. We had such a great experience....we will definitely be back in the summertime for more adventures!

We had a great experience staying at Charlene's home at Mt.Shasta for a week. I say "home" because it truly was, to my family-2girls n r lab. A cozy home just right for us with snow right in the backyard if we did not want to drive 25mins to the snow park or 15mins to any road-side sledding area. Charlene's attention to detail with the decor and the general cozyness-very comfortable beds and bedding, great fireplace and general heating and well stocked kitchen, was very much appreciated after long days of rolling in the snow! Thank you so much for sharing your home with us we will definitely return to spend many a winter here!!!!

                      Year Purchased: 2012

About the owner: My husband and I moved to the north state over 20 years ago to enjoy the outdoor activities it provides. Our main home is in Redding but we have spent many a happy hour hiking and skiing in the Mount Shasta area. For several years we have dreamed of having a little getaway but never found anything that felt “right”; that is UNTIL we first saw this cottage. The cute little house had character, was tucked away in a seldom-traveled cul de sac , and was within walking distance to the main street in Mount Shasta. We quickly bought the property and now would love to share it with others.

Why the Owner Chose Mount Shasta:
We are retired but are still very active. Owning this property puts us a short distance from some of the favorite hiking places we have enjoyed over the years. In addition, we can walk to all the great eateries and quaint shops on the main street of Mount Shasta. When we are not hiking or shopping, we can just relax by reading a book or watching TV or a movie.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We enjoy being in the heart of Mt. Shasta, but still feeling we're out away from the rat race. We love all the nice restaurants and shops and just sitting on the porch reading a book, watching the train go by. It is just one of the most relaxing places on earth.
