A house is a house is a house, and mine, although it's upscale, its just a house. BUT . . . you are coming to Florida to live, so let me tell you what life is like at home.

My neighbors own a restaurant near the beach. On Thursday and Friday nights they have live music and great food, very inexpensively (BYOB). I go there for lunch many times. They own a big boat and like to take me and my guests out fishing, good neighbors.

My other neighbor is a man from Georgia. He renovated my home two years ago, granite all over, new doors, lots of glass and wood all over and music piped throughout the house, and outside. He also has a boat and would take you out, but you have to ask him; he can come and fix anything for you, or let you in if you got locket out!

If you are adventuresome, I have a tandem kayak that is all set to go--that's how I visit with the Cormorants (see poem about that somewhere else here). If you want to bring your own boat, my white floating dock is just waiting for a new captain to moor its most prized possession on its boards.

For breakfast, there's nothing like sitting by the water, enjoying your cup of java, listening to nothing and taking it all in. The word peaceful most have been created to describe my back yard. But if coffee with a succulent breakfast is more your speed, get on my retrofit bikes and to the Full Belly Deli. Rela, the owner, would cook up a storm for you. When I am not hungry, she toasts a Kaiser roll for me and serves it hot and juicy, with fresh milk for my coffee. When I am hungry in the mornings, she scrambles two eggs, slices fresh tomatoes and sprinkles lots of the Italian herb recipes she smuggled out of her native Italy, and adds plenty of olive oil, delish . . .

When I am in the mood for Greek food--almost any of the local restaurants have a plate or two of Greek food in their menus--I drive down to Tarpon Springs and stuff my face with grape leave wraps, gyro meat or a fresh seasonal fish, baked and deboned in front of you, cooked, of course. We have plenty of all fast food around, don't get me wrong. But who would want to do that when there are so many early bird specials in really good and inexpensive eateries?

When I get home after a night out, I serve after dinner drinks, or a glass of wine, by the waterfront, listening to nothing and enjoying every minute of it. I prefer to listen to soft jazzier sounds on nights like those but I've been known to play music that makes me want to dance under the night sky--the back and front yards are all bricked so the party can take place anywhere in the house. Don't worry about the noise, should you make some, just waive the neighbors in and offer them some goodies. They can tell you sea stories until you are just exhausted; If you get tired, just ask them to make a gracious exit and they comply right away. Or, play the music a bit lower and they will not be heard from--they'll keep their desire to party to themselves.

By Hudson Beach, there's this hole in the wall kind of seafront place that has the best oyster Rockefeller you have ever eaten, plus music and good conversation. Sam's on the water is great for enjoying--dancing--the oldies on their boardwalk restaurant. I ride my bike to Sam's or the Inn on the Gulf across the street, great food. Of course, I am very partial to Mike's Dockside--not a dock to be found at the restaurant. The setting is wetlands and a water canal across from it. They do fishing tournaments and the music is great.

The only requirement to living in my home is that you have to have a story to tell. If you have lived through life and are full of wonderful stories, big and small, of things that happened to you, or things that you made happen, then you will fit beautifully in my home. When you come, I want you to build your own stories using my home as your backdrop. Build your memories to share with other people in your life who would be missing you when you are not with them. Those people would greatly appreciate the stories you would bring back with you about how happy and how fulfilled you felt while you were a guest in my home.

My friend, Jerry Bond, does a bonfire on his property in Tennessee every year. The only requirement that you have to be a guest at his bonfires is that you bring a story with you that starts like this: "I was there when it happened . . . ". As you have already surmised, Jerry has very interesting friends. These events are coveted in the mountains of east Tennessee so if you are from that area, or want to part take in one of the bonfires, just let me know and I'll ask Jerry to invite you, with your story.

One time, Jerry was a guest in my home. After he left, I went out in my Kayak to the bay by the condos, easy to get to from my home, by kayak, of course. In there, I had one of the many encounters I often have with Cormorants that fly and dive by me. I emailed Jerry about that experience and my writing began with "I was there when it happened". Jerry got inspired by my writing and wrote a poem he called "Life is Where the Cormorant Finds You". It occurred to me as I read it that life is where the Cormorant lands, not where it finds you so I wrote a response to his poem appropriately named "Life is Where the Cormorant Lands. Jerry pilots his own airplane. I am a lady pilot in training.

These two poems are included below as a way to illustrate that what is important is what it feels like to live in my home and not necessarily in the amenities it offers--they amenities are all there and they are valuable, but building upon your life's story is more important to me, than anything else.

Take the Kayak out. Go see my Cormorants, just tell them Monique and Jerry sent you.

Don't take my plane out. It is under lock and key and the FAA would not want you to go for a joy ride on it, sorry, not everything is perfect.

The Unique Benefits at this Private Home

Life is Where the Cormorant Lands Strangest that it was ever that I met him, yesterday Standing tall, by my side, e’ver thoughtful and gallant. Be here; here that I am, Wet wings spread towards the sky. I saw it fly the skies, ever so gentle, ever so fine, Streams of clear smoke just left behind. I saw it fly the skies, ever so gentle, ever so fine, Deep down near the heart. Silent keep’th, through the night, And pause to hear the light. Silent keep’th through the days ahead And pause to feel the light. Surfacing down from the havens, Or up from some mysterious lands, Ever so careful, the minnow guards As sea soaked moms parade on by. Fear not the sky is blue, And sparkles brighter than the sharpest star. Be there, sit, Spread your wet wings towards the sky. Fear not the wondering souls, For out of darkness, the sun comes to light the sky. Fear not the mysteries revealed For out of darkness brightly shines the sky.

Owner's Map of Hudson

When there are guests in my home, I go travel. Last year, I traveled to Greece with my four nieces. The girls are New Yorkers and they like to vacation by the pool at the resorts we stayed in. Me, I took off and went to see the ruins, volcanoes and even rode a donkey up a steep mountain. Enjoy my home and build your own stories while in there. Its allure has always been the water. In the mornings, and late at nights, the water is so still that it looks like glass. The water is deep, 14-23 feet, depending on the tide. When you swim in the water, your body can feel the different temperatures in the water, as the water gets dipper, it is colder. If you stand in the water, your feet can be very cold while your upper body is still responding to the bright sun above. I've never ventured out in the water at night so I don't know what happens to the temperature then . . . I'm too busy thinking about who the night visitors might be and whether they are up to no good, like nibbling at my feet. One time, dolphins swam around the dock making figure 8s trying to catch baby fish. Quite Amazing! Another time, 10 red fish came to visit. I took every thing I found in my fridge and kept feeding them. Ed, the guy that was doing my brick at the time, went and got a fishing rod and took two in. Later, much later, we found out that there is a restriction on the fish size, below 17" or above 27" you cannot touch. My fish was 36", Ed's was 42". I felt very badly after I found out that I was not supposed to have put in my frying pan. So beware: there are restrictions to size and they must be observed.
