Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2005

Of all the places I have lived, Colorado is my favorite, and within Colorado, South Fork has to be one of the very best places to enjoy the awesome beauty of Mother Nature. I hope you have the opportunity to spend some time here. It will invigorate your spirit!

My name is Chet Pauls and I hope to retire with my partner Kathryn in the South Fork area one of these days in the near future. I grew up in Linden, New Jersey, attended undergraduate school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then entered the Air Force as an environmental engineer. I was stationed at Mather AFB, California; Brooks AFB, Texas; Tuy Hoa AB, Viet Nam; Griffiss AFB, New York, University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, McClellan AFB, California and Washington, DC. In 1979, a commission in the United States Public Health Service was accepted and I was assigned to the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC. There, I worked in the Safe Drinking Water Program until 1990, when I was selected for a position in Region 8, EPA in Denver, Colorado. In 1997, I was hired by the State of Colorado, Department of Public Health and Environment and currently I work part time in their Safe Drinking Water Program.

I have now lived in Colorado for longer than any other location – it is now my home.

Why the Owner Chose South Fork

I chose South Fork for its recreational opportunities, for its rural flavor and associated wildlife and it’s ever changing beauty. For the winter, Wolf Creek ski area is located just 18 miles west on Highway 160 and boasts the most and the finest natural powder skiing in all of Colorado. We can snowshoe directly off our porch and into the adjacent Forest Service land. Occasionally, we get the desire to utilize motorized winter transportation and this area provides many opportunities to quench that desire. In the spring, summer and fall we hike the nearby wilderness areas, watch the birds and other abundant wildlife, practice our photography, and this year, ran the Rio Grande from Coller State Wildlife area to South Fork in our canoe. We have seen moose at Hunter Lake, Bear at Wagon Wheel Gap, bobcat at Coller State Wildlife area, deer and coyote in our yard, and elk in the meadow at the south end of our street. I have even committed to taking a fly fishing lesson to experience the challenge of outsmarting a gold medal trout in the near-by Rio Grande. The scenery is always changing – from snow covered peaks in the winter, lime green aspen of the spring, multicolored wildflowers of the summer and the gold of the fall aspen. And no matter what time of year, the sky is always magnificent: whether it is the clear blue of the morning sky, the stars from the brilliant Milky Way or known constellations, ephemeral bright shooting stars, the recurring but never-the-same shapes and hue of the moon, the changing clouds and storm fronts with their lightning and thunder, or the daily dosido between sun and clouds by day and the mountain's crest in the evening. Finally, there is the darkness - the moonless sky on a clear night sparkles with the stars and the Milky Way. It can't be adequately described, you have to see it for yourself.

The Unique Benefits of this House

The beauty and recreational opportunities available nearby make a vacation in South Fork memorable. You can ski, hike, bike, boat, fish, hunt, bird watch, read, photograph, star gaze, antique, theater, concert, jeep, or railroad to your heart’s content, and this particular house provides benefits that enhance your experience: It is beautifully finished and maintained; it is quiet; it provides amenities to sooth your spirit, like a Jacuzzi tub, or wonderful mountain views and king sized beds. It provides the opportunity to relax with your favorite media entertainment, or to experiment with your culinary skills in a fully equipped kitchen with commercial gas cook top, double oven and outdoor gas-fired grill. If the children come, you can relax while they play games in a safe place, distantly upstairs. Or you can work out on the Concept II rowing machine. And if you must stay in touch or do some work, wired and wireless internet access are available. When night comes, you can use our telescope to appreciate some of the constellations more intimately.
