Le Refie is a small farmhouse of traditional Tuscan design that belongs to the Count Capponi domain. Le Refie (sleeps 6) is situated at an altitude of 650 meters amid quiet forestland. With easy access from the main road, the house sits at the base of Monte San Michele right next to national parkland. Located only a few kilometers from the main country towns and cities (Greve in Chianti, 13 km; Figline, 12 km, Florence34,5 km, Siena 45,8 km), Le Refie is located in the heart of Chianti. It is a charming landscape of chestnut trees instead of olive trees and vinyards. The Refie farmhouse and woodland belong still nowadays to the count Capponi family owner of Villa Calcinaia estate (18 kms ) and former landlord of Villa Carbonaia (300 meters far from the Refie farmhouse). Thanks to the altitude and forest land a very precious chestnuthoney is produced in the estate .The farmhouse has no swimmingpool. The nearest food-store from Refie apartment is in Lucolena Village(4,4km). It is a small shop that sells the essential staff. In Greve village(16,1kms, or 13 km via dirt road) one can find all sort of shops, restaurants , pharmacy ,banks and a supermarket that is open everyday from 8.30 am to 1pm and from 4.00 to 7.30 pm. The supermarket is closed on Sunday. In the main square of Greve village there are some food-store open on Sunday morning. REFIE HAS NO SWIMMINGPOOL

Le Refie was the perfect spot for our family's Tuscan vacation. My husband and I along with our 27 year old son and 19 year old daughter, met at the Pisa Airport, rented a car, and drove to Le Refie. We arrived around 7 PM to be met by the elderly care taker,Roberto and his wife. While not speaking english, we were able to use a phrasebook and communicate well. The villa met all our needs. Not fancy, but charming, spacious and functional. It looks just like the photos. The kitchen has a gas cook top, and electric oven and small washing machine. Lots of dishes, cutlery and pots and pans. The only thing we missed was an American coffee maker. The carafe for it was there, but the coffee maker was not. Fortunately, we had with us a travel french press, and in the kitchen was a thermos. So....first one up, lit the stove and started pots of water, for multiple pressings. :) There is a rooster and hen behind the barn, which I loved. Roberto and Io live on the property, so they have fruit trees, a garden, and all of real life. Behind the house, and through a gate is a national park. The first night there, as there was still light and we were just in from our transatlantic flight, we hiked aways into the park. The views from there were magnificent. This would be a great place for hikers and cyclists to use as home base, as well as those wanting to tour wineries. A GPS was vital !!!! It is remote, about 20 minutes from Greve via a dirt road. In Greve, you will find a large grocery store, wine shops and the like. We did day trips to the Cinque Terre (a 2 hour drive), Florence ( a 1 hour drive) and then lots of Tuscan towns and vineyards, Radda, Siena, Montalcino, Montepulciano, and Pienza. We were given a free tour of Villa Calcinaia Winery, a complementary bottle of wine and olive oil. Every one we were in contact with, from Countess Capponi, to the caretakers was very helpful and kind. Countess Capponi answered several of my pre -trip email questions about the area very thoroughly and promptly. I did short out the electricity to the entire house by using the blow dryer while the washer was on. Fortunately, Roberto was there and could get it going again. I was given a cell # for the owner, too. I would highly recommend this property to anyone who is interested in a rustic tuscan vacation, without wanting modern american amenities.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, adventure seekers.
