Large 3 bedroom, 3 full bath home for rent in small fishing village of Chelem, Yucatan (about 5200 people) on the Gulf of Mexico. Chelem is not in a resort area, but a small laid back town very close to large cities and modern conveniences. A true Mexican experience.
Our home is newly renovated been completely updated and features a small pool overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The kitchen is a modern kitchen, with all appliances, even a blender to make some Mexican traditional drinks. We added a new clothes washer. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan. Air conditioning is really not necessary on the beach in the Yucatan. Believe it or not the evening air can almost be chilly during certain parts of the year. Sleeping is very comfortable. Our pressurized water systems provides hot water. For those of you concerned about the water, we provide several gallon water bottles for your use during your stay.
Our design is basically a Mexican style home. Most paintings, pottery and furnishings have been purchased locally.
The main living area has two very large glass sliding doors that provides magnificent views from the kitchen, living room, dining room and master bedroom. Adjacent to the kitchen is the pool area, partly covered by Tilapia style roof for some shade. Imagine sitting in a lovely pool overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, with a margarita in hand. The beach is quiet and good for swimming, or taking long walks and searching for seashells.
The house has lots of living space, and the second bedroom is a walk down the hall, really secluded from the downstairs living area. Each bedroom has a private bath. There is plenty of space. The third bedroom and bathroom was just completed this year and has its own private entrance and terrace. This second floor room has its own outside patio and a full panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico. It is so lovely!
For our guests, we provide wireless broadband internet access for access anywhere around the house. We have a Cable Satellite TV, with American channels. Also, we provide a DVD with a full library of DVDs. Nintendo, for the men and the children, with a host of games. Great for a rainy day.
Our home is located within walking distance of the main square of Chelem with its many good restaurants (our favorite, El Bull Pen, is right on the corner near our house, or for just a few blocks away is a bakery that has the most delicious daily made French bread.
We are about 6 miles west of the cruise port town of Progreso, (approx. 50,000 people) which has several beachfront restaurants, tourist shops, a wide malecon (boardwalk), a nice square, and a bustling market.
We are only 30 minutes north of the large, colonial city of Merida (over 1 million people), which has an international airport featuring direct flights from Houston. The best connections are on Continental Airlines, offering 1 stop service from most US cities directly into Merida. Or you can save some money and fly into the resort area of Cancun, which is about a 3.5 hour drive from the house; it is also served by a luxury bus that travels from Cancun to Merida.
There is much to do nearby including visiting Mayan ruins (Dzibilchaltun, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and several others), or touring henequen/sisal plantations with their restored haciendas, kayaking in flamingo habitats, swimming in cenotes (underground rivers), fishing, lots of shopping, or just beaching it. The area is culturally interesting and will provide you with insight into true Mexican life.
Within driving distance of the home are several very interesting towns with unique personalities - Izamal, Ticul, Valladolid, Celestun, and many more.
Historic Merida is a city dating back to the 1600's with amazing original architecture in the Centro district. Experience music and dancing on it's many squares nightly, or on Sunday morning rent a bike and tour the city on several streets closed just for bicycling. You will love the fabulous restaurants and outdoor cafes in Merida, and the shopping is great!
Or visit modern Merida with it's ice skating rink in the center of a mall, interesting zoo, or it's VIP movie theaters with lounge chairs and cocktail service. Even Home Depots and Starbucks, if you're homesick.
A rental car is provided during your stay with us. We either deliver it to the villa the next day or meet our agent at Merida airport upon your arrival. We provide step-by-step directions to the property, or you can be escorted directly to our villa using our caretaker. I recommend using the car, you do need transportation during your stay.
We have an English speaking caretaker only a block away if you need assistance, he will also provide airport meet & greet and introduce you to the home. We have many friends living nearby, so you'll have a handy network.
Our home, with a car rents for $660 per week. That includes the car! A great deal. Normally, a car would cost you about $250 for the week. Since this is going to someday become our primary home, we take great pride in caring for it and our guests. We like return renters.

- The house has well water, but we provide large water bottles for drinking, just in case. We also have a pressurized hot water tank for hot showers. Many homes in the Yucatan do not have hot water. Beautiful garden fountain and Koi fish pond.

Terry and Anthony live in Monmouth County, New Jersey. We both work very hard in the States and look forward to visiting the Yucatan when we can take time from work.
Why the Owner Chose Progreso
You see, several years ago, I embarked on a cruise with my children and a few friends. Fate, I have to believe, took me to the most rustic, beautiful area in the world---the Yucatan. For a few years, I only dreamt daily about the Yucatan. Each summer, we would search the internet looking for properties for sale, land for sale, etc., speaking to realtors, review listings, but that was as far as we could go. Our dream home was waiting for us. Then last summer on our way to Cabos, we decided to meet with a realtor to take a look around. We had only one day to canvas the area, but I knew that there was a beach house for us. After an exhausting day, we came across our dream house, and now a year later, our dream has become a realty. Homeowners in the Yucatan!
