Casa del Risco is a one bedroom casita, perched 110 ft above a private cove beach, on your own private, walled ½ acre, with 180 degree coastal views, on the Pacific Ocean.
After passing through the iron entrance gate, through flowering gardens and giant palm trees, you descend down several garden steps over a wooden bridge and through an antique door into the casita. The casita is comprised of one bedroom, kitchen, double sink vanity, private WC and an outdoor shower accessible through a glass door. The private outdoor shower, where you may spend more time than expected, is partially enclosed on two sides, covered with a palapa roof and open to a raised garden on the third side. The breathtaking view from the shower includes the waves breaking on the beach & cliffs below as well as the coastline south to Sayulita. Opposite the foot of the bed are sliding doors and sliding screens to the balcony, with a palapa roof and palm tree supports, table and chairs. Breakfast, lunch or sunset dinner can be enjoyed here in total privacy without ever leaving home. Below the balcony is a tiled sun deck with a barbecue, wet-bar, chaise lounges and umbrella. By now you probably have guessed that this is not a place for children. There are several steep cliffs and drop-offs. The steps to the beach have a rope railing but the sunning patios have only planters. You will enjoy the feeling of being in the treetops with the flocks of pelicans that float on the air currents all day long, occasionally diving for fish below. Watch for whales just to the right of the property about 3/4 mile off shore. They like to spend the winter there too.
The property includes numerous patios for sunning or a deep shade garden patio under an ancient Fig tree, all with different spectacular views of the ocean and coastline. The beach below is accessible by traversing rustic steps across the hillside and down to the rocky shoreline and a beautiful sandy beach. The surf can be calm and azure blue to rough and huge waves crashing on the cliff side. During turtle season, leatherbacks have been seen laying their eggs on the full moon tide. The public beach is a short walk out the driveway and down the hill. From there you will find the 2 miles of beach with several restaurants and cafes. Fishing boats, for hire, moor at the far end of the beach. Kayaks can be rented as well at Costa Azul on the beach. If it’s a calm surf, you can paddle back to your private beach or further north along numerous coves.
The pueblo of San Pancho offers many fine restaurants. My favorite is Café del Mar, high on the hill, above town and MarPlata at the bottom of the hill by the beach. Also, the polo field has a fine restaurant where you can watch a Sunday polo match at sunset while having cocktails and dinner. After that you might just walk down the street and watch a soccer game on your way home or stroll through town and shop. If it’s lunch you’re after try the taco stand by the hospital or the one at the foot of the hill before Café del Mar. The next town south of San Pancho is Sayulita, visible from our property, looking south. In Sayulita, surfing is the big draw. Plan to have lunch under a palapa on the beach and watch the surfers that come from all over the world to compete at this location. My favorite lunch spot in Sayulita is actually in town above the village square for fish tacos, you can’t miss it.

We knew our stay at Casa Del Risco would be unique and extrordinary when we spent our first breakfast watching pelicans and frigatebirds feast on a ball of baitfish just offshore. Actually, that first sunset accompanied by the rhythmic thrum of the Pacific was convincing enough, our cares slipping away along with the last sliver of burning pink. The rest of the week was just as magical and effortless; the powerful, serene sea our constant companion. You will find that the house is truly comfortable without losing authenticity, that your needs and wants have been anticipated and pre-arranged. Follow the directions provided, they are common-sense and provided for your benefit. If there's something special, assistance is a phone call away (as are Abigail's magical fingers for a massage on the patio). The bed will tempt you to linger. Give in. Ever wonder what you'd look like with no tan lines? There's a very private sundeck. And, of course the private ocean beach down an enchanting rock staircase. Thirsty? that means a beer (how nice, they supplied a large cooler). Guacamole twice a day? Yes please. Casa Del Risco facilitates indulgence without the guilty feeling. It's a third wheel that adds stability, so ride as far as you can. San Pancho is a fine town, with a great beach vibe and a few good gringo fine dining spots. You can have delicious food at cheap prices at the taco stands (don't miss a smoked marlin burrito) or, even better, buy fresh fish from the pescador in town and grill it yourself back at the house. In fact, you could load up on supplies and spend a week in your perch on the cliff without seeing another person. We may do that next time. Casa Del Risco is a place for dreamers and lovers, for those unsatisfied by someone else's idea of luxury accomodations. There are some couples who feel like their way isn't just the best way, it's the only way. Well, aren't you lucky you found this place?

Every inch of this tiny house is well thought out...from its crazy perch beside a beautifully tended garden and atop a rocky crag, to the two small decks for sunning and watching the Pacific Coast go by. The constant roar of the ocean below will melt away whatever stress may have arrived with your luggage. It's private and secluded, well outside of town, dark at night, without TV, and a perfect place for two to escape reality among towering palm trees near the friendly pueblo of San Pancho. Pack light. You really don't need much here. The owner, caretaker (Abigail), and gardener are all a joy to deal with. And as a bonus, Abigail does really mellow, holistic massage on the deck.

We stayed at Casa del Risco in early May. The house sits on a bluff on the wilder side of the jungle's edge, a few minutes south of the village. It's actually so discrete that, arriving, there's little sign of the house at all, and it takes a moment to realize that it's actually under your feet. The one-room casita is built into the side of the cliff; a stone path winds through the garden around its side. Inside, the decor is equally unobtrusive--making use of natural tones of white and sandy marble, it has an understated Mexican feel. Its tasteful simplicity doesn't translate into lack of comfort though--quite the opposite. The bed is supremely comfortable and the kitchen more than adequate for cooking three meals a day (which we often did). The attention to detail is made evident by the fact that the owners provide an electric lime juicer for your use--an indispensable aid for margarita and guac-making. The outdoor shower deserves special mention: tucked between bird of paradise plants and open to the sea, it brought personal hygiene to a whole new level. When we arrived, there were fresh flowers throughout the house. Despite being small, the house feels expansive--the shaded porch is where we spent most of our time, listening to the rumble of the waves, watching frigate birds pass by at eye level and pelicans fishing, but there is a lower sun deck as well--probably the best sunset view on the entire coast. This is not to mention the beach itself, a narrow cove carved out of the surrounding rock. There are steps leading down the cliff, and when the tide is out you can climb over an outcropping of rock to get down to the sand. Even more dramatic is when the waves came in high--standing near the base of the steps, you can watch the ocean crashing on the rock below your feet. The house is so deliciously romantic that it is easy to forget there's a town nearby; there seems little reason to leave (unless you happen to be out of limes). But San Pancho is only a few minutes down the road or a walk down the beach. We had the best shrimp ceviche ever from a truck on the main road. The hibiscus margaritas at Cielo Rojo are highly recommended. The beach is quiet and swimmable. Entre Amigos, a wonderful community organization with a cafe, shows how much locals and visitors alike are invested in the town. This was one of the most wonderful vacations we've ever had, and this truly special place really made it. We'll be back, no question.

Thank you Steve and Abigail. This house was a vacationer's dream come true. The house is beautifully done and perched above a wonderful cove. Sounds of the waves day-through-night, an outdoor shower and decks all around that provided picturesque views, lush gardens, perfect kitchen...we fell in love with everything. I have already recommended this place to everyone I know. If the cove's waters are too rough, don't fret, spend 200 pesos (less than $20 bucks) an enjoy the pool at costa azul..or even better...go to the public beach in san pancho and enjoy the hospitality of the locals! We had a delicious dinner at mar plata, but most of our meals were made at the house. rent this place now. you'll return to wherever you're from sunkissed and refreshed. Shawn & Leslie

Based on reading the first two reviews we were expecting Casa del Risco to be exactly what we were looking for and we were rewarded in spades. Even though we had a rental car, we usually walked into town (25 minutes) and every morning we descended the steep stairs/path (2 minutes) to our own gorgeous, secluded beach to begin our day with a few minutes of meditation and yoga. Casa del Risco is small (no sitting area inside), but we didn't need any more. We ate breakfast on the balcony and after full days of fun and adventure, we always looked forward to returning "home," a shower (unique! we'll leave the surprise for you), reading on the lower terrace, appetizers, off to dinner in town, and then back again to fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves far below. We'll be back, no doubt competing with you for a reservation. If you're big on shopping and nightlife, stay in PV. If you want privacy--perched amidst a lovely garden with killer views of sunsets over the pacific--this could be the perfect choice for you.

My wife and I celebrated her sixtieth birthday with a two week stay in mid March at Casa del Risco. How fortunate we feel to have picked San Pancho and Casa del Risco over all the other offerings on the VRBO website. The personal treatment we received from Steven, the owner and Abigail, the local contact and property manager, insured us a worry and hassle free vacation. The wonderful photographs and description of the casa on the website give a good idea of what to expect but cannot convey the magic of the place. We arrived at the casa at night. Stepping outside onto the porch in the morning we felt we’d been transported into another world. The view was breathtaking. From an airy perch one hundred feet above the water, the Pacific spreads out before you to infinity while waves crash against the rocks at your feet and pelicans soar in formation at eye level through the tops of the palm trees almost within reach. This panorama was a veritable sound and light show as conditions changed from dawn to dusk and from day to day. We never tired of sitting on the porch and taking it all in. At her most mystical, my wife felt the unremitting, rhythmic pulse of the waves pounding the shore as the sound of the earth breathing. The casa itself is an architectural gem. Although small (essentially a studio apartment) the layout is very creative and all the porch and terrace space makes it seem much larger than it is in actual square footage. The materials, quality of construction, and furnishings are all first rate. Designed by a Mexican architect, the style is authentic Mexican with a clean, uncluttered, contemporary feel. The galley kitchen, although compact, is efficient and well equipped. We prepared most of our meals here with ease. The porch provided the ideal setting for sipping margaritas at sunset and eating al fresco. No restaurant in San Pancho could compare in terms of beautiful setting. The casa is very private and somewhat isolated, about a ten minute drive or thirty minute easy walk to the center of town. Sitting on the porch nestled into the protective greenery of this dramatic site, cut off from the world without internet access or TV, cooled by the gentle ocean breeze, one feels in total harmony with nature, an experience impossible to describe and like no other that we have had in our extensive travels. All in all this is a very romantic spot for a couple of any age and one of the most unique and richly satisfying travel experiences of my life.

We stayed at Casa del Risco from February 5 thru 14 and it was perfect for us. It is very private and secluded, which was our first priority. There is truly a private beach below – it requires just a small hike down some nice steps built into the hillside. We saw one other person on the beach (from the casa) while we were there (1 week). Our first morning we saw a pod of whales from the deck while having coffee then saw more a few days later. All views from the casa and grounds have 180 degree views of the Pacific. The casa is immaculate, well furnished, and in new condition. The outdoor shower also has 180 degree views of the ocean (an indication of how private it is here) – awesome! The grounds are equally pleasing with well groomed landscaping and lots of trees for bird watching from the decks. Steve the owner is very professional and responsive and Abigail the local host is very knowledgeable and always helpful. San Pancho is a clean, safe, and friendly town with ATMs, groceries, and several excellent restaurants – La Ola Rica was our favorite. Much busier Sayulita is just a few miles away and also has fine restaurants and lots more shopping. For our taste though, it was nice to return to quiet San Pancho after a day in Sayulita. The beach in San Pancho seems deserted after visiting Sayulita and on some days it was literally deserted. It is about a 15 – 20 minute walk to downtown San Pancho from the casa, but half of that is beautiful beach. However, it is something to consider if you don’t have a car and don’t enjoy walking. I understand Steve has purchased two new bikes for guests to use. We enjoyed the daily exercise and bikes will make it even more enjoyable. I should mention we did not have a car because Abigail took us to and from the airport for a very reasonable price. It included a stop at a large grocery store on the way to San Pancho. We’ve been to Mexico about 10 times and never returned to the same place twice, but we will definitely return to Casa del Risco!
