Why the Owner Chose Papakea Resort

Maui has been rated as one of the top destinations by leading travel magazines for years. We agree! We particularly love West Maui because you can stay as busy as you like, or you can relax, "hang loose". We felt that if we enjoyed this area so much, others would, too. We also felt it would be a great long-term investment for our family.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo

Looking out over the spectacular Papakea gardens, pools, Tiki Torches at night, and the Island of Molokai from our 'lanai' is our most enjoyable benefit. From Papakea you can walk to the beach quickly, walk to a nearby beach park, rent snorkeling gear, surfboards, and other water equipment. There are farmers markets, restaurants, and shops very close by. Our boys particularly love what we call "buffo hunting" at night. The big Hawaiian frogs (buffos) will be out around the pools, and we sneak up on them and gently grab them behind the ears! It's fun!

A
Shopping & Eating

Across the street from Papakea is the local supermarket (Star Market, 808-667-9590), shops, small restaurants, water sports rentals. Convenient & a great savings when compared to the resort prices.

B
ABC Store (808) 669-0271

Hawaii has a famous chain of 'convenience stores' called ABC Stores. One is conveniently located directly 'mauka' (toward the mountain) from Papakea. It even has a gas station!

C
Farmer's Market (808) 669-7004

Visit this Mon-Wed-Fri, 7AM to 11AM - fresh island produce and goodies! Say aloha to 'Prince' and the ladies!

D
Kapalua Airport

Small plane service to Oahu only, 5 times per day on Mokulele Airlines (808) 426-7070

E
Honokowai Okazuya and Deli; Pizza Hut

3600 L. Honoapiilani Road 808-665-0512 (Deli) http://www.mauihawaii.org/restaurants/okazuya.htm Really great local food, take-out style, at very reasonable prices

F
Papalaua State Park

15 miles south of Papakea on the main road (south of Lahaina) - great snorkling area. Parking along the main road.

G
Old Lahaina Town

Lahaina is a quaint old whaling town. Lots of shops, restaurants, and beaches. This is the site of an enormous Banyan tree, near the marina.

H
Fun, protected beach in Lahaina town!

This is a great beach - shallow water, small waves. Ideal for little kids. Take Honoapiilani Highway from Papakea south to Shaw Street. Turn right. Drive to the city parking lot at the corner of Shaw

I
Honokowai Beach Park

Honokowai Beach Park is just a short walk north of Papakea. It's located right next to the Aston Paki Maui Resort and across from the Lahuiokalani Chapel. The park has a recently upgraded playgrou

J
Honua Kai Beach Park

This is just a few minutes south of Papakea. If you reach Honoapiilani Highway (the traffic signal intersection), you have already gone too far! Turn around - it is that close! It is a brand new park

K
Napili Bay

One of the most beautiful bays in all of Hawaii! Just up the road from Papakea. You can swim, boogie board, go exploring, sunbathe, and picnic here. The resort has a snack bar & restaurant.

Owner's Map of Papakea Resort

Our family has owned at Papakea since 1999. Dave and Tracy Dudek are the owners. We have two sons, ages 11 and 16. We love the islands and lived on Oahu for many years. We enjoy our second home very much, and hope that you will, too! Aloha.

Just back from our second stay (2 weeks this time) in this great unit at Papakea. We love the location of the unit, with view out over the entire complex to the ocean. So fun to sit on the lanai and watch the water, sunsets, palm trees. Very relaxing, quiet, ambient place to stay. We will definitely hope to rent this unit again. Thanks David and Tracy!

Better then expected!!

Guest: Pat (Ashland, OR)
Date of Stay: 09/13/11 Review Submitted: 09/23/11

All too often words and photos are enhanced to capture potential renters attention. We were extremely happy to find out that was not the case with this unit. The views from the L/R and lanai were better then we expected - beautiful grounds at Papakea and the blue waters of the pacific - very nice. This unit has a master bedroom and with the additional studio above the L/R makes it ideal for families. Everything worked well in the condo, kitchen was fully equipped and with all the Barbeques around the pool we were in heaven. We'll definitely be back. Thanks for sharing your piece of Maui with us!!

Great Condo!

Guest: Debbie (Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada)
Date of Stay: 02/19/11 Review Submitted: 06/02/11

Our family of five stayed in this condo February 2011. This was not our first time to the Papakea Resort. We have stayed at several different units at Papakea and have also had the opportunity to visit several, as we travel with other families staying at the resort. Condos that are individually owned are decorated to the owner’s standards and vary from owner to owner. The owner has tastefully decorated this condo. The five of us were very comfortable and had a wonderful stay; there was plenty of room for a family of five. The kitchen is clean, well maintained and stocked with plenty of dishes, glassware, casseroles and necessary gadgets and utensils. The condo was clean when we arrived and everything was in order as it should be. The view from the lanai is the most spectacular that we have had at the resort, the view of the grounds and the ocean is fabulous. We found Dave very pleasant to communicate with and would not hesitate to stay at this condo again and recommend to others.

Owner response:Thank you, Debbie!

Date of Stay: 03/12/11 Review Submitted: 04/14/11

My family stayed at this unit from March 12th-21st 2011. After spending many hours scrolling thru the many units in Maui for rent I finally decided on this one and am very glad I did. The balcony view is wonderful as are the grounds. At times you can swim right out front depending on the tide and we did. There are plenty of lounge chairs at the waters edge.During sunset we would park ourselves in a lounge chair and watch the sun set and the whales entertain us.A sandy beach is also right there next door with lots of lounge chairs to use, surfing lessons, snorkeling,a pool bar everything you would want. Papakea is across the street from a farmers market that runs Mon Wed and Fri. There is also a great health food store everyday and cute shops as well as surfboard rentals places to book excursions everything right there within walking distance. If you have a car the location is central to everything the island has to offer. The unit itself has everything you could need. The loft is great and our teenage daughters loved it. Everything was very clean and upgrades are evident and while we were there they were measuring for all new drapes, furniture coverings and carpet. It was fine how it was but new is always nice too! Working with the owners was always easy and fast to respond. They give you a list of great Maui insider info and we found this very helpful and did just about all they recommended.Trust me this place is great. I challenge you to fine a better unit at a better price. You won't!

Great place to stay!

Guest: Terry (Seattle, WA)
Date of Stay: 11/02/10 Review Submitted: 04/07/11

My husband and I rented this unit in November of 2010 and have made arrangements to rent again during the same time period in 2011. We love this unit and the Papakea Resort. It is in a great location, close enough to the popular tourist spots but in a very tranquil setting. Granted this is not a high-end resort hotel, but we don’t like to stay in bedrooms of large resorts with extra resort fees, parking fees, nowhere to cook, large crowds, etc. We chose this unit for location, reasonable price, the view, and the fact that it had two bedrooms so that we could invite another couple to join us for part of our vacation. The resort staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Working with the owners was very pleasant; they were quick to respond to any and all of our questions and gave us far more information about Maui and the surroundings than we expected. Everything about the unit and the resort were exactly as stated, with multiple pictures and written descriptions. We knew exactly what we were renting and there were no surprises. We have the view from our 4th floor patio on our computers as a screensaver, imagining relaxing on the deck with a glass of wine, looking forward to our next – and hopefully – future visits! Thanks David and Tracy for making our vacation so pleasant!

Just okay

Guest: Jackie (Rochester, MI)
Date of Stay: 07/27/10 Review Submitted: 08/06/10

This unit is just okay. Owner says it is renovated, but many things were left out of reno. Junky cabinets were just painted and a cheap laminate countertop was thrown on. Bedspreads were old and shabby. Curtains were filthy and old. Carpet and furniture were dirty and shabby too. Air conditioning doesn't reach back bedroom. There is no beach out front either. Would not stay at this unit or complex again.

Owner response:We strenuously object to the veracity of this review. It is completely in error. We only learned of this negative review this week, February 8, 2011. Maui had a hot spell while this woman rented our unit, from July 27, 2010 through August 4, 2010 - she was uncomfortable due to the heat. Papakea was built in the 70's and does not have central air conditioning; we are allowed only 1 window a/c unit allowed per condo. We provided her with additional fans; the condo also has 3 ceiling fans. We have stayed in our unit in the hot summer months without a problem. To date, this is the only guest who has complained about the heat. Hawaii is a hot and humid place. Possibly this guest had not been there previously. The cabinets were installed in 1977 when the condo was built. They are in very good condition - this condo has had limited rental usage in its history. I painted the cabinets in September 2009 - 4 coats. They look & work great (new hardware). See the photos on the VRBO website for this unit. The counters were professionally installed brand new in September 2009 with Formica. To call them "cheap" is quite unfair. Again, please see the photos. They are not granite, but they look great. The bedspreads had just been washed before this woman arrived.. Our maintenance man met with her and told her this, to no avail. The curtains had been drycleaned in September of 2009. The furniture is in good condition. The carpets are clean, but, yes, there are some stains. The carpets will be replaced after the busy spring season. The "no beach out front" had been disclosed to her prior to her renting. It is disclosed to all prospective guests. The beach is next door to Papakea, and is a great beach. Some people prefer hotels over condos - this guest was probably one of them. Notice that she says she wound not stay at the "complex again". Anyone who has ever stayed at Papakea raves about it - I cannot imagine anyone not loving it. Instead of a vertical high rise hotel complex, it is all low rise buildings with gardens, koi ponds, bridges, putting greens pools, etc. It is a large, open-courtyard feel with truly wonderful ocean views from nearly all units. There are no crowds! There are no shops. This is not Whalers Village! It's a great resort complex and a very good unit with a beautiful view!
