Clean, quiet residential place right next to the shore. Lots of windows w/screens to let in the breeze and fans. Excellent for star gazing on the huge balcony as it's nice and dark at night. Spacious and comfortable; everything you need in the kitchen plus great beach gear for use. Very near Waimea Canyon hiking too.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you Stacy!

While it was a bit far away from some of the main attractions, it was exactly what I was looking for. No crowds. Private. Clean. Friendly and wonderful host. Laundry was a bonus too. Off the beaten path haven with incredible view and the sounds of the waves...Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

A very nice beach house with lovely views out to sea. Located on a relatively busy road, but the sound of the sea and spectacular views more than make up for a little bit of traffic noise. Very helpful owner who was a pleasure to do business with. Would we go back in the future? Yes we would!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for your kind words Mick! We try to keep the vegetation high enough to block much of the road activity, but low enough to allow for those great sea views! It's a long way to come, we know, but hope you'll return someday! Aloha, Ole

We had a great time at this property - most appreciated the food in the frig!!! Very clean and well appointed with LOTS of printed materials on the area. Our host was fabulous. And when we left something there upon check out, a message was sent immediately to our email, letting us know. Just be aware that this property is on a highway; so you will hear the traffic.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Kathleen & Michael! Glad you had a good time. You will also hear the waves against the shore and the wind in the palms. If anyone is concerned about the traffic, we can always locate you further back. Aloha, Ole

We have rented a number of accomodations through VRBO, and this is the first time we have been disappointed. We arrived about 7 p.m., and found the cottage to be unlocked, as expected. There was a fresh pineapple on the bar, and sausage, eggs, and butter in the refrigerator, as well as english muffins and waffles in the freezer. However, no windows were open to allow in the breeze, and it was rather stuffy. Ole arrived a few minutes after we did and welcomed us and showed us lights, fan switches, etc. We were tired after travelling all day, so went to Waimea and had a marvelous dinner at Wrangler's Steakhouse. We picked up a few needed groceries and went back to the cottage. The next day, we noted that the cottage has not been lovingly cared for - the exterior showed signs of neglect and lack of maintenance, and the wiring is likely not up to code. The furnishings were old, poor quality, and worn, and the sofa and chairs were extremely uncomfortable. The towels and bed linens were well-worn (fitted sheets would not stay in place). The end table was a plastic one designed for patio use. The hammock, which I had been looking forward to utilizing, was unsafe, as the support rings were rusted through. The charcoal grill was unsafe (one leg was rusted through and it tilted), but was quickly replaced when mentioned to the caretakers. On at least two occasions, the owner entered the property without our knowledge, which made me very uncomfortable. He allowed a realtor to see the interior once, and we caught him coming down the stairs alone another time, making some remark about "checking the frying pan inventory". We thought we were renting a single family "cottage", however, it was in fact an upstairs "apartment". The photos which were shown on the listing could not have been taken from "Ironwoods", as there was not way for the ocean view from the bedroom. Although we had a great vacation, we will definitely NOT be returning to "Ironwoods", nor will we recommend to relatives, friends, or acquaintances.Owner response: This lady's comments are appreciated. Though good, we can always improve...but only with truthful criticism. These folks told us they would arrive 8-9PM. We did not hear them arrive next door. When I went over to open up the house and turn on all the lights at 7PM they were already there, wandering around in the dark! I immediately opened and lit everything for them. They were tired, and I suggested they enjoy some of the breakfast goodies rather than going out again. When they demurred,I suggested Wrangler's Steak House, only three miles from the house. Apparently they appreciated my suggestion. I protest to the characterization that our property has not been lovingly cared for. It has been freshly painted and carefully maintained. Because the house is only 150 feet from the sea and exposed to constant, salt-laden trade breezes, there is always some weathering to be attended to. The wiring is indeed up to code. I asked these folks B4 they left if anything needed to be repaired or attended to. They mentioned nothing electrical, but I will have the electrical system checked by a licensed electrician. The furnishings are not new, but they are generally of high quality. The King size mattress is new. Indeed, we do have plastic deck furniture so it can be abused and frequently replaced. The hammock was being attended to during these folks' visit. We have been unable to find a new one on our small island, so I was fashioning new fittings from scratch. A new charcoal grill had already been obtained, was on site, and immediately replaced the old one when they communicated the problem. We respect our guests' privacy and rarely enter a cottage after it has been occupied. In this instance there was little time between reservations and I needed to replace the frying pans to avoid damage to our new ceramic-topped stove. The plan was to change them out before arrival, but that was unexpectedly premature and unannounced. On the second occasion the friend of a buyer wanted to see inside. I knocked, and showed her briefly the interior. I was with her constantly. Even though it was midday all the lights and fans had been left on. VERY expensive for us, as we have the highest electrical rates in the nation, yet I touched nothing. The guests would never have known we were inside if I had not felt morally obligated to mention it to them. If one will check the Ironwoods page of our website, photos of that cottage can be seen. There is indeed a bedroom ocean view.

My husband and I recently returned from Kauai and had a wonderful 11 night stay from 4/23 - 5/4/2012 at Ole's beach house. We were greeted by the caretaker Shawn who was very friendly and gave us a lot of great information. The grounds are very well kept. The fridge was stocked with breakfast foods and juice and a large ripe pineapple was there for us to enjoy. I used it to make a large pitcher of Pineapple Sangria. The house was very clean, spacious and the amenities were more than we expected; washing machine, private clothesline, lots of towels and everything you could possibly want available in the kitchen. The house has a deck that pretty much wraps around the entire house. The ocean views from the deck, living room and master bedroom are spectactular. You can hear the ocean waves all day and night. We watched the sunrise from the 2nd bedroom and the sunset by walking across and down the street a bit. This area of Kauai is very quiet and serene. There are a few good restaurants and grocery stores nearby between Kekaha and Hanepepe. We celebrated our 33rd anniversary while there. This house is affordable and well kept. We enjoyed our stay and we plan to return. We highly recommend this beach cottage. It's perfect for couples and small families. Thanks Ole for checking in with us during our stay. We had a wonderful and unforgetable vacation. We hope to return soon.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Willie and Joyce. Come back for your 34th!

A family of 6 adults - we all loved Ole's Beach House. We stayed at the Ironwood for 9 days at the end of January. Ole is most attentive without being intrusive, and welcomed us with a fresh pineapple and a hearty breakfast ready to cook in the fridge. Decks all around add additional room and privacy. Beautiful grounds enclosed by a living green privacy hedge provided a peaceful and romantic rendezvous for dozens of dancing Monarch Butterflies we watched daily from the deck. Waimea and Hanapepe a few minutes drive away, offering great food and artsy shopping. Nearby Salt Pond Beach and Port Allen offer gorgeous swim/snorkel beaches and fishing/kayaking/helicopter adventures. Polihale State Park Beach, best in all Hawaii for miles of undeveloped soft sand beach and reflected starshine!, is a short distance away. The house itself is solidly built and furnished, with wood lanai sliding doors, beautiful solid wood countertops, and sliding doors everywhere leading to the wraparound decks. Big, beautiful pebble-floor shower and privacy doors allowed 6 people to easily share one bath. All the spaces within Ironwood are a model of design excellence. I left my carry-on case behind (Yikes!) and Ole was most helpful in shipping it to me. What a host! Thank you!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Thank you so much for the generous and unexpected breakfast provisions and warm welcome. We loved the Sea Grape House, especially the sunrises and sunsets admired from the deck. We loved Waimea Canyon, spent a lot of time at many beaches (favorite would be Polihale), took the 7 hr tour with Holoholo (awesome company), enjoyed food at Wrangler's Shrimp Station, and JoJo's. Got to watch dolphins, whales, and lots of birds from the deck. The golfing at Kukuiolono Park had beautiful vistas, forgiving fairways, and was very inexpensive. Utilized ours and your Ultimate Kauai Guidebook to see places not necessarily promoted, including the glass beach, old landfill, cemetary, swiss cheese beach near Port Allen, Infinities Beach, Swinging Bridges, ditch built by the Menehune. We very much enjoyed our vacation.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

You provided everything one could possibly need (except sunshine, but we understand that's out of your control). Despite mostly rainy daysthis was a great base camp for exploring Kauai, & a wonderful place to watch ocean storms. Thanks to you all for the warm welcome, well-stocked pantry, & home away from home feeling. Aloha and Mahalo,Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We had a wonderful time here. Just what we needed, a relaxing getaway! We enjoyed sitting on the deck each night listening to the waves crash against the shore and we even spotted multiple whales throughout the day. We would definitely suggest the canyon to visitors that follow us. The Waimea Canyon Lookout and Kalalau Lookout are beautiful sites. Poipu Beach, Barking Sands (on PMRF) and Glass Beach we also enjoyed. Today is our last day and we are sad we have to go. We want to thank you for the warm welcome and suggestions of sites to see. The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook that you have here for visitors is a great resource. Mahalo,Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

guest April 26 - May 2, 2010: Ole, just returned home to pittsburgh and its back to work time, yuk. Just wanted to thank you again for your hospitality, we loved the house. It had everything we needed, the layout of the house was great (loved all the pocket doors so you could really open everything up), and the sound of the ocean at night was fantastic. We grilled out several nights and the lighting instructions for the charcoal worked perfectly. We'd love to come back again, you'll be the first know when we do. Ole Thanks for the great time in Kauai. We greatly enjoyed our time at your place—the slow pace, the feel for old Hawaii, and the weather was awesome. We had a great time on the east side as well—a completely different feel, but, somehow, we found more time to rest there—so much to see and do on the west side! Ah, well—back to reality. It’s 46 degrees in Billings at noon today. The only global warming I’ve ever experienced is in Hawaii. Mahalo. RobertDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/4
