Keywords: Family Home with Yard, Garden and Rooftop Terrace
This house was a family home. Our children grew up here. We have built a new house for the two of us next door now that are the kids are grown up and have moved. We live and work in San Miguel and I was born here. So we know the area very well and can help you with whatever information you need to make your stay more enjoyable.
The house is very comfortable and cool in the summertime. Because they are so many windows it is easy to get a cross draft going. In the winter, there is the fireplace which is in the sitting area of the living room - private and a great place to curl up and read a book. Because there is a bathroom downstairs it would be possible for someone that had a limited disability to stay here as long as they can maneuver up two sets of stairs to the bedrooms. It's also a big plus not to have to bring the groceries up a long flight of stairs!
The view from the rooftop terrace is beautiful. At night the sunsets are spectacular - each one is different in some way. The garden is beautifully decorated and you can catch the morning sun here or go up to the terrace and watch the sun as it comes up over the Parroquia.
The little tienda a half a block from the house sells water and limited supplies. It's an easy 10 minute downhill walk to the Instituto Allende where you'll find language classes, cafes and tours. There's a corner store near the Institute for supplies and a fresh fruit and veggie stand in front. You can continue on to the center of town, El Jardin, which is 20-25minutes walk directly from Casa Colibris. Don't worry - you can taxi back to the house for a mere $25 pesos or $2.50US.
We are very happy to share our home with you. San Miguel de Allende is a World Heritage site and we know you'll see why once you are here. You will feel welcome here - not just by us but also by the towns' people. And just to make sure that you don't have to do anything, the house will be cleaned once a week.

Why the Owner Chose Colonia Caracol
Colonia Caracol is a classic Mexican neighborhood. It is filled with hard working people. We have a neighborhood church very close by and there are often family activities going on there on the weekends. The children thrive in San Miguel. It is not unusual to see kids out at midnight with their parents watching the fireworks. The family is all important in Mexico. And on Mothers' Day you can hear the groups of young women going around singing about how much they love their mothers - going from door to door. That is the kind of neighborhood that we live in and why we stay here.
The Unique Benefits at this House
The private house and garden are unique. The house is a traditional Mexican casa and there is a wood burning fireplace in the sitting area. All of the rooms have windows and the house keeps cool in the hot summers. The house is furnished with traditional Mexican furniture and is extremely comfortable. There is wireless internet in the house and Colonia Caracol is a typical Mexican neighborhood. It is a nice 20 minute downhill walk to El Jardin, the center of town. You can take a taxi back to the house for a mere $25 pesos ($2.50). There is a bus 2 blocks from the house as well ($0.50). And a half a block away is a little store where you can buy water and a few groceries. We love going to El Jardin on Sunday afternoons to watch the tango and salsa dancing.
There are several fresh fruit and vegetable tiendas on this street. They are almost across from one another past the school in the direction of Ancha de San Antonio.
There are a couple of places along the street in the direction of the Instituto. One does the butterflied chickens. They are ready about 2PM and are fantastic.
Owner's Map of Colonia Caracol
We lived in this house while our three girls were growing up. Everything in the house is cared for with love and you can still hear the laughter echoing in the rooms.
The location is very quiet and we built our new house right next door. We are able to help you with information about San Miguel de Allende and the surrounding area. I (Raul) speak English having lived in the US when I was younger. Guadelupe is from a village near SMA and understands a lot of English but speaks Spanish.
Both of us are teachers. I teach English and Guadalupe teaches Spanish. We love San Miguel and we love our house. It is a great honor to be able to share that with you now. We will do whatever we can to make your stay a memorable vacation and we hope you will return again some day.

Our stay at Casa Colibris

We truly enjoyed living (46 days) in this authentic Mexican house with its flowerd gardens, where we sipped our lemongrass tea after lunch.Ttwo patios offered shade or partial sun ,perfect for reading on a lazy afternoon. A goodsized sunlit kitchen ,equipped wih more than adequate utensils, made it pleasant to prepare meals for ouselves as well as for the occasional dinner guests, from whom we got positve comments regarding the artistic and harmonious set up of the place, and the quality of the living room furniture. The second floor-glass-lined den was the best choice for our computer activities. The roof top terrace a real bonus, ! (wih a clothes line ) ...for sun bathing , ...for the VIEW of the city and the Parroquia, ...for enjoying margaritas while watching the ever magnificent sunsets! Also, we experienced warm and freindly relations with the owners ,(living next door): Raul, Guadelupe and their children... We would recommend Casa Colibris ,for a stay in beautifull San Miguel de Allende !
Owner response:We're very happy that you enjoyed your stay. I know that Raul and Guadalupe also enjoyed meeting you both! As time goes on we plan on adding equipment to the kitchen and elsewhere in the house. We enjoy hearing from visitors about the creature comforts they missed from home and adding things that would make you all more comfortable.
Recommended for:Adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car.
