In Spanish, Cinco Estrellas means Five Stars. That’s the ambience and the experience we’re aiming for. So, if you’re a connoisseur of charming getaways looking to explore the Big Bend Country, enjoy Marfa’s mysterious lights, contemporary art galleries and upscale eateries, gaze at the universe at the McDonald Observatory, soak up the history and charm of Ft. Davis or if you’re looking for a serene, regenerative place to start (or finish) your great American novel, this may be just the place for you.

The owners are artists and designers Kathy and Lionel Sosa, who restored the cottage and decorated it in a style she calls “West Texas Hacienda”. It’s a style that pays homage to the blended cultures of the Texas-Mexico borderland. And when you fall in love with the art, textiles, bedding or decorative accents (which we predict you will) you’ll be in luck. Much of it is for sale and Kathy would love for you to take a piece of Cinco Estrellas home with you.

The county seat of Brewster County, Texas, Alpine has historically been the center of commercial and social life for the Big Bend Region….and Cinco Estrellas is just steps from everything! A block from the Amtrak station, 1-6 blocks from great eating, drinking, grocery shopping, a fitness center, Aveda concept salon, Sul Ross University facilities, a beautiful bookstore and (what must be) the world’s most extensive hardware store. Alpine’s 4500 foot elevation means an average July-August high of 89 degrees with after dark temperatures averaging a brisk & refreshing 65.

Best of all, Cinco Estrellas is just a block from Historic Murphy Street…where you’ll find fabulous interior Mexican cuisine at Talgar’s, delightful and distinctive art at reknowned Texas artist Tom Curry’s gallery and The Murphy Street Raspa Company…where you can enjoy snowcones and ice cream in summer, Mexican chocolate in winter, and great coffee and free Wi-Fi year round.

For your entertainment pleasure Cinco Estrellas features a library of books by our favorite Texas authors as well as books on West Texas and Adobe architecture and décor, plus a DVD Player and West Texas Movie Library that includes movies filmed in or about the region: Giant, There Will be Blood, No Country for Old Men, Dancer, Texas, pop. 81, Paris Texas, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Lonesome Dove & The Last Picture Show and assorted westerns.

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2008

My husband and I are artists and I am an interior decorator who loves to save and restore old buildings. We live and paint in a farmhouse in Floresville, Texas and operate an art gallery in the Lavaca Historic neighborhood in downtown San Antonio. We'd heard about West Texas for ages before we made our first visit there 5 years ago for an art show I had at a wonderful place called "Bread and Breakfast".. WE began to visit more often when my husband's daughter moved to Alpine to open the Murphy Street Raspa Company and we were soon smitten with the stars, the mountains, the climate (so much cooler than San Antonio...brisk nights and mornings even in the dead of summer!) the history and character of the place, and the people. This town in the perfect homebase to explore the regional sights... Big Bend National Park, Historic Ft. Davis, the MacDonald Observatory, Marathon and Marfa....none of which are more than a 25 minute drive from our front door.

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage

Cinco Estrellas (which means Five Stars in English) is just a block from the Amtrak train station and within walking distance of lots of great eating and drinking! It's a short walk to the greatest hardware store in West Texas and the most charming bookstore (maybe on earth) and the most luscious home-baked cinnamon rolls you ever tasted with the best coffee too...and just steps from award winning snow cones and ice cream. There's a mountain view from our back porch... which is a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy the brisk mornings or make a fire in the fire pit on a cold winter's night.

We had a wonderful stay!

This house reminds me of my parents' farm house in Ireland. The wide walls and the deep windows. Also the painted floors. The house was very comfortable and loved having tea and coffee on the back porch.

We just returned from our stay at Cinco Estrellas. It was just beautiful! The weather was perfect and the house was like a dream. My boys were just mesmerized by the colors and the art....yet they felt at home and relaxed. The fruit and coffee where the best. During the day we rode bikes and at night we gazed at the blanket of stars that seemed close enough to touch. There are no words to express what a joy our stay was. We were already planning our return before leaving for home.

Fabulous!

My family of 5 just spent a long weekend in Alpine for a family wedding. Cinco Estrellas was perfect for us. The big kids (11 & 13) stayed on the pull out couch and the baby was in a pac-n-play in the bedroom with us. The kitchen is AMAZING. We cooked a big breakfast every morning for the kids before heading out for the day. The location was great, walkable to most places in town. And the bikes were a bonus, the kids loved riding around town on them. Our extended family congregated at Cinco Estellas in the evenings so the kids could run around the nice back lawn...it was for sure the place to be! Our expectations were exceeded and we highly recommend this casita to anyone looking for a place to stay in Alpine!

Cinco Estrellas is such a beautiful place and a little slice of heaven in West Texas. We set out on adventures every day including the museum at Sul Ross, Fort Davis, Balmorhea, the star party at the McDonald Observatory, Marathon, and Big Bend National Park. Our son is now the newest Junior Ranger at both Fort Davis and Big Bend. Although it was difficult to pull ourselves away, we were happy to return to this peaceful place each evening. Every detail has been considered and is beautiful! Thank you so very much. We will return. Blessings are here. Regards, Annwen, Allen and Kaven (age 5) of Austin

The cottage is wonderful. Each detail adds flavor to the stay - it sets the mood for a West Texas visit. We enjoyed a cinnamon roll at Bread and Breakfast before heading out to Big Bend. After a terrific dinner at Reata, we traveled to the Mcdonald Observatory for the 9:30 star party - saw the blaze of the International Space Station, 3 meteors and Saturn! Fantastic! (Be sure to take a jacket) Heading to Marfa for breakfast then on to the spring fed pool at Balmorhea before heading home. Thank you Oksana for everything - give your sweet baby a kiss for us!
