Casa Gavira is a beautifully restored historic home located on the quiet Gavira plaza in the magical, historic center of Guanajuato. Less than a minute walk up behind the Mercado (Market) Hidalgo lays the Gavira plaza with its spectacular view of the Mercado’s clock tower and the city of Guanajuato.
The front door opens onto the quite plaza with a big tree that towers over the home. From the plaza you are welcomed into the large, open living and dining room with high wood-beamed ceilings and antique furniture. On one side of the room is the cozy living lounge surrounded by the fireplace. On the other side of the room is a dining room table that seats 6-8 people. There is also a desk with books, and a stereo with a music library for your enjoyment while dining or sitting by the fireplace. The spiral staircase leads you to the rooftop garden terrace with magnificent views of Guanajuato. The lounge seating around the fireplace can also sleep an additional 2 people.
From the living/dining room a large archway leads you to the central foyer. The entrances to each bed & bath are found on each side of the foyer. While continuing towards the back of the home you enter into the sunlit, plant-filled, and glassed-covered courtyard complete with a fountain and hammock. The courtyard provides a refreshing place for breakfast or lounging in the hammock to the sound of trickling water from the fountain.
Connected off one side of the interior courtyard is the fully-equipped, traditional Mexican styled kitchen.
It is a real treat to shop just a minute away at the renowned Mercado Hidalgo and cook your meals or prepare margaritas in this beautiful kitchen. There are also Mexican cookbooks to assist you. Off the other side of the courtyard is a second entrance to the large Master bathroom for convenience while entertaining.
Each of the 2 bedrooms are uniquely styled, have beautiful en suite bathrooms, a double bed, an armoire, and a vanity/desk.
*Casa Gavira is accessed by pedestrian only alleyways with stairs. Must be able to walk up and down stairs to arrive at Casa Gavira. Not suitable for those unable to walk up stairs.

This is my first review...ever, but I felt Casa Gavira is highly worthy of my praise. First, the booking process was very easy and Mindy responds quickly. Second, the directions are flawless, making an easy transition from bus to taxi to house. Third, when we arrived we were just in awe with the accomodations and made immediate friends with the neighbors and their kids. Plus, the property manager was there waiting for us to give a thorough walk-thru and then immediately left to give us the house to ourselves. Yes, the house is authentically Mexican in terms of plumbing (paper goes in trash), never met one that wasn't. But who cares with such views, decor and uniqueness. We had an amazing trip with our children, ages, 13,9,and 4, who never wanted to leave the house because of their new local friends. Make sure you visit the mercado up the alley and say hi to Martin, who will provide you with a cold beer or soda pop anytime you want! This place was centrally located, safe and just plain awesome. Do not go anywhere else, trust me!

Casa Gavira was professional to deal with from start to finish. The home is in the ideal location and we enjoyed the authenticity of the house that is tucked into the neighbouhood; real, vibrant, colourful Mexico. When you leave the house on foot, in about a minute you are down the stairs to the Mercado Hidalgo where we bought fresh fruits, veggies and fresh tortillas multiple time a day. A bakery is around the corner from the market and we had fresh baked goods every morning. The main supermarket is about a 5 minute walk. We left the house with 4 kids aged 4-9 and walked the maze of cobblestone pathways for many hours in a different direction every morning. The house is in the perfect location for fit, active people! The roof top patio was a wonderful spot to enjoy a coffee in the cool morning air and watch/listen to the city come to life. The kids played on the roof top patio in the afternoons when we were having our siesta. They loved it! Casa Gavira was also in the perfect spot for the 8 of us to walk with our luggage down to the main street and hail cabs to the bus station on the last day. It was a wonderful vacation and I hope to visit again!

This property we rate a very good. We really like the authentic style of this colonial home and the quiet neighborhood is a real added plus. A once over for dusting the overhead lights and surroundings would be the only additional request we would make. We really loved the central location making walking to everything so easy. We are active so the stairs where not a problem but seen as a plus to get a nice exercise. The owner is very nice and really helped us with some great ideas on what to do in the city, we did things we would not have known to do without her help. We can't wait to recommned Casa Gavira to friends and family. This city and home provided a really unique travel experience. Guanajuato has some incredible sights, cultural activities and pretty good restaurants at a very reasonable price. Highlight where the Symphony at Teatro Principle, Diego Rivera Museo, a sunday concert and drinks and horsdevoures at the Gene Byron museo and just discovering the city by foot and the convienent city buses. Our trip overall we give a 9 out of 10! Enjoy Guanajuato and Casa Gavira!

We recently visited Casa Gavira and can honestly say it takes your breathe away. It is amazing - a tropical paridise with all the bells a whistles you can image. Very sexy and comfortable and cozy all at the same time. The hostess welcomes you with a genuine warm and caring for your comfort and knows her Mexican food. We look forward to our next visit.

My Stay at Casa Gavira

My stay at Casa Gavira was wonderful. Guanajuato has a very unique character, and this house is no exception. It is apparent that Mindie has spent a lot of time picking out just the right accents for the house, and the result gives it a cozy but eclectic feel. The house offers plenty of different areas to relax after spending the day walking around the city, such as the outdoor patio adjacent to the open-air kitchen and the living area with a desk, table, and lounge seating. There is a bit of an uphill walk to get to the house, but it is very centrally located and offers great views of the city. Everything regarding the location and appearance in the description was accurate and my expectations were actually exceeded upon seeing the house. Mindie was also very professional (and friendly) before, during, and after our stay, as well as helpful with recommendations for where to go in Guanajuato. I would definitely recommend Casa Gavira to anyone planning a stay in GTO.

Beautiful Style, Great Location

Our stay at Casa Gavira was wonderful. We have two small children (2 and 4 years old), and they loved it, too. Location is great, very close to the absolute center of everything. Mindie (the owner) was super helpful and very responsive when we needed anything, and she's really done a great job making the house feel special. When the hot water pressure dropped suddenly, she had her guy out to fix it within a day. She even called a cab for us (from Texas!) when we had family in town that needed to get to the airport by 6 in the morning! One thing to note: if you have any physical impairments that might make it difficult to climb stairs regularly, this is not the place for you - the only ways to get to the house are by climbing up a narrow winding staircase from the Mercado Hidalgo, or walking from the area near Callejon Del Beso, which isn't quite as steep, but still has a fair bit of hiking up and down stairs involved. Overall, we loved it!

We enjoyed our stay at Casa Gavira! It is beautifully and carefully styled, with so many visual treats. The outdoor courtyard with fountain is a delightful addition. Expect to have a relaxing time! The casa is very centrally located, an ideal spot from which to explore Guanajuato. Mindie, the owner, is very responsive and wonderful to work with.
