Amazing Place

Guest: Anonymous
Date of Stay: 04/14/12 Review Submitted: 04/25/12

This was an amazing place, exactly as described by the owner, and very well maintained. I only had one, very minor issue while staying there. I was able to call the owner, have him on the phone immediately and the issue resolved within 5 minutes. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommended!

Owner response:Thank you for your kind comments! So glad you enjoyed your stay at The Casita and we look forward to your next visit! Best, Tom and Carolyn

Unique location, beautiful casita

Date of Stay: 02/21/12 Review Submitted: 04/14/12

We spend 4 wonderful days in February at the casita. Views...what can I say? Every morning was breathtaking. Then more beauty at sunset, and the brightest stars ever. The casita is lovely, very tastefully decorated and well outfitted. The remote location does require some planning, but the solitude is so worth the effort. Highlights of our stay- watching the sunset from the hot tub while drinking champagne to celebrate my birthday, and seeing a bald eagle every morning!

Date of Stay: 01/15/12 Review Submitted: 01/22/12

The views are stunning and the descriptions of the location very accurate. The Casita has more amenities than it even mentions and is very warm comfortable and clean. The owner provided information and guidance to make the stay complete. The gourmet kitchen provides everything one needs to cook a fabulous meal. The only problem we had was getting up the drive on the ice in our vehicle which was not 4 wheel drive. We were warned but also had assistance very soon. This is definitely a return destination as there is so much to see and experience in the area. One does not even have to leave the Casita as it is an artists' dream come true.

Sunrise!

Guest: CD
Date of Stay: 11/25/11 Review Submitted: 01/07/12

Sunrise – I watch it at home, rising over the mountains, onto the lake. I can’t get over the sunrise here – the changing colors of the landscape are beautiful and amazing. Our first trip to New Mexico, so this, Casita del Lago, was a perfect location for viewing the hills, rocks, colors, and N.M. beauty. We had a fun, relaxing, adventurous week at the Casita del Lago with our very dear friends. We covered lots of territory and sites, ate fantastic lunches and brunch out; cooked dinners in (glad for the Weber BBQ). Enjoyed the hot tub, too! And the NM sky at night is fantastic. Casita del Lago is most comfortable. We enjoyed our stay. Thanksgving dinner at Abiquiu Inn was yummy!

Our trip was excellent and went smooth as silk. Everyone in our party enjoyed the stay and the casita, even though most days we were out from sun up to sun down. Thanks again for making such a nice place available to us. PS: my brother is a contractor and he was very impressed with the workmanship and construction of the home!

Thanksgiving 2011

Guest: Colleen (Hayden Lake, Idaho)
Date of Stay: 11/18/11 Review Submitted: 11/26/11

Casita del Lago provided all the amenities necessary for a comfortable vacation. The views from this property are incredible. If you want to get away from crowds, work, city, and into the open spaces, this is the place to go. (You can stay connected with the wireless, tv and cell phone...buy why, when you can just soak up the New Mexico desert and scenery.) We had clear days and nights -- stars from the hot tub were in full glory. Our friends drove their Prius to this property, and had some reservations on the last bit of road, but it made it just fine. If the weather were to turn to snow or ice, getting up the hill might have proved difficult. The owner does recommend 4-wheel drive in winter months, which you should heed. Lots of day-drives from this location for numerous historical sites, tours, general sight seeing through nearby high mountain forests, sage brush & juniper high desert country, and, of course, the colored cliffs made famous by Georgia O'Keefe's art. Puye Cliff dwellings, Taos Pueblo, O'Keefe residence at Abiquiu, Carson Nat'l Forest, Jimez Mountains. We flew into Albequrque, drove to Santa Fe and spent a night. Did some sight-seeing in Santa Fe, but really wished we would have had another day here (we did stop in again on our way back to ABQ airport). Stocked up on groceries in Santa Fe and headed to the Casita. The owner's reocmmendation to arrive before dark, is a good one, and we thank the owner for that. This is a good recommendation for 1) the scenery and 2) finding your way to the Casita the first time. Be sure to get up for the sunrise, as the landscape view changes by the minute in color, shading and beauty, as you view it from the Casita. This was our first trip to New Mexico and that Casita provided a good location from which to get a feel and flavor of this wonderful State. (Per review guidelines: the photos & description on VRBO was accurate, property was clean and well maintained; I would recommend this property. Restaurant recommendations: Aibuquiu Inn, Abiquiu - we had delicious lunch here, and Thanksgiving buffet; El Bruno's, Cuba; Taos Inn, (historical building)Taos; -- we ate lunch at some other locals....all food was good New Mexican style food. Cooked all dinners at the Casita.)

What a lovely casita! The views are breath taking and we loved it all. Made day trips to Santa Fe, Chama and two drives to Los Alamos. Taos was charming also. The days flew by and wish we had more time here. Fished below the Abiquiu dam, a trout dinner fit for a king! We wish we could pack it all up and take it home ?

Our first morning here we were gifted with the most spectacular sunrise Ive ever seen. It was as if the sun was on fire. Previously, we had lounged on the couch under blankets watching the smoke from the chimera swirl and the shadows move across the mesas across the lake. I have always loved New Mexico but have only spent time in Santa Fe and Taos. This was something else, a vision and solitude, of ancient vistas unchanged. The Casita was perfect with its amenitites and the views supreme.

What is a week at the Casita del Lago?!

Guest: Joanne M – Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Canada

Dear Carol and Tom, What’s a week at Casita del Lago? One may ask of those who have been and we’d try to describe this spectacular spot with word pictures yet unseen: It’s a starry night in the hot tub early morning’s magnificent view, brandy old fashions, lots of good wine, a tour of O”Keeffe’s Abiquiu. It’s the joy of inhaling this landscape, While trying to absorb all of this peace. It’s a wildly adventurous roadway And Don’s driving expertise. It’s a week we will always remember, Scenes we will never forget. Good friends, good food, much laughter, Would we love to come back? You Bet! Thank you so much!

We arrived late in the day after stocking up in Santa Fe and then Bodes store. Bodes was amazing and offered much more than we had anticipated. When we arrived at the casita we were awestruck at the setting, it was beyond our expectations. We settled in and grilled our dinner and then enjoyed the view from the hot tub. Almost time to leave - so much yet to see, not enough time. But we did enjoy: morning and evening hot tub Ghost Ranch and hiking Chimney Rock Ojo Caliente - best spa ever! Taos - lunch at Orlandos, dinner at El Meze - both yum! Crossed the Gorge Bridge - awesome Los Alamos - lunch at blue window cafe Plaza Blanca - hauntingly beautiful Echo Ampitheater - cougar country! Chama’s High Country Restaurant - best BBQ chicken we ever had Cuba - lunch at El Brunos - they will make fresh guacamole right at your table. The gallery next to Bode’s is best of all the galleries we saw all week and great prices. We fed a deer crackers by hand in Chama, saw 2 coyotes near the hot tub. Met lots of super nice people all week. We saw a million stars in the hot tub last night, we are heading back out one more time tonight, our last night. We are all so sad to leave this beaufiul, peaceful Castia del Lago.

Tom , we had a fantastic time staying at The Casita del Lago. Peace, quiet and a front row seat to the Milky Way, sitting in the Disco Lights of the hot tub in the evenings while sipping on a large gin and tonic. A perfect escape from the chaos of London and New York.

Mr. Calfee, My husband [B] and I spent a week at Casita del Lago almost a year ago and it was so wonderful; we speak of it often and wish to return. Unfortunately, this year we can't make it due to a big project [B] is building here in Oregon. We would like to reserve for 2012 so we have something to look forward to! We are looking at arriving xxxxxxxxxxx (11 nights). Is that agreeable and what do you require from us? Has much changed besides the house they were building above? Owner Response: Dear GG and BM, Thank you for your email and your kind comments about The Casita del Lago. We just love it there, also. Yes, we are accepting reservations for 2012 and the dates you have selected are available so I have temporarily reserved the dates on the calendar for you. As for the area, the house they are building above is almost finished. The roads are being better maintained and there is a new house starting in the fall, but it is far away from the casita. As for the casita, we have purchased a small laptop table and sofa back table for the living area, stained the beds in the Sunrise Suite, added storage furniture to both bedroom suites, added a portable evaporative cooler, installed a porch screen and have purchased additional kitchen supplies and improved decorating. The grounds are also starting to naturalize after the build interruption. In the near future we are adding a telescope and a picnic table for outdoor dining.

Tom, thanks for the most beautiful, serene, relaxing vacation ever! We enjoyed Taos and Taos Pueblo and santa Fe, but our favorite times were at the house, enjoying the views and exploring the grounds, and in relaxing in the hot tub. We looked forward to watching the sunset every evening and even enjoyed some starry nights and sunrises, too. Loved the simplicity of the casita, the comfy beds, and of course the windows!

Peaceful, Beautiful, Relaxing Piece of Heaven

Guest: Les (Richmond VA)
Date of Stay: 07/19/11 Review Submitted: 08/20/11

May family and I stayed at the Casita for a week in July 2011. We enjoyed day trips to Taos and Taos Pueblo, Santa Fe, and Echo Amphitheater, but our favorite times were relaxing at the Casita and watching the sunset from the hot tub. The Casita is simple, comfortable, well-built, and beautifully furnished. Huge windows offer amazing views of Abiquiu Reservoir and the surrounding area, as well as the afternoon thunderstorms and sunsets, which were different and amazing every night. Kitchen, laundry facility, and showers were clean and very nice. Master bed was wonderfully comfortable, and we awoke to a beautiful view every morning. Nights are extremely quiet. On a cloudless night with a full moon, it is bright enough to walk around outside. On other nights, the view of the stars (including many shooting ones) and the milky way will take your breath away. I do have two small suggestions: 1.) Guests need to know that a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary to drive right up to the house, especially in inclement weather. 2.) A dishpan or such kept next to the hot tub, to be filled with a small amount of water from the hose, would be handy for washing feet before entering the hot tub, and help keep it clean. Thanks for a beautiful, relaxing, unforgettable vacation!

Owner response:Thank you for the wonderful review--we just love it there, too. Just a note--the road had a washout and was repaired on 8/20, so 4 wheel or AWD drive vehicles aren't necessary except in the winter months, and that the foot bucket next to the hot tub is a great idea!

The Casita was wonderful! Our family had such a great time. We enjoyed the peace and quiet and the beautiful views from every direction. There are a couple of things to note though: there is no air conditioning, and although it is chilly at night, during the day it got up to 87 degrees inside the house even with the doors and windows open. It wasnt unbearable but something we had to adjust to. The other issue was the access to the lake and river. It is a very steep hill with cliffs on each side and accessing the water can be difficult. Lastly, make sure you take water and groceries with you-getting back to the paved road takes 15 minutes and its another 15 minutes to a gas station if you forgot something. This was a vacation to remember. Our children had never been out west and this was a unique and wonderful place for them to see!

Owner response:Thank you for your wonderful Review. We did just add an evaporative cooler. Also, the 14" Adobe-like walls act a "super insulator", different from most homes. The guest book details how to trap the cool morning air in for summertime comfort. Thanks again!

Thanks for allowing us to enjoy this amazing spot where there are basically no people--just nature. It was good for my soul. You picked the perfect spot! P.S. Love the huge windows--when the weather isn't nice enough to go outside, one can still enjoy the great view. Thank you!

Surprise May 1st Snowstorm made for an Excellent Private Birthday Weekend Getaway!!

Guest: CJ & Rob (Albuquerque, NM)
Date of Stay: 04/30/11 Review Submitted: 05/18/11

We arrived on a beautiful sunny 75 degree Sat afternoon w/ perfect directions to the gorgeous home overlooking Abiquiu Lake. After a picnic hike down to the waterfront rocks thru the Trail of the 2 Dead Trees, we celebrated w/ a long soak in the hottub. We have several cairns in our own backyard, so we loved making more on our hike down to the shoreline. As a foodie & wannabe chef, I brought Rob's most fave meals for his special birthday weekend (spaghetti & filet mignon). Our Sat nite dinner started with a crockpot of homemade spaghetti sauce simmering all afternoon, pasta, salads, garlic french bread & a lovely bottle of Sangiovese. We lounged on the daybeds as we watched the last of the sun set over the mtns. We awoke on Sun am to 5 inches of snow already on the ground & very large fluffy snowflakes fell all day long with a high of only 35 degrees...this atmosphere just fed our laidback lounging attitude of the weekend getaway! We enjoyed the hottub many times, this time w/ hot chocolate & steam rising over the beautiful white wonderland around us. Catching snowflakes on our tongues while soothing our aging muscles was a delight! We stayed in our robes & slippers all day long & enjoyed the fireplace & music & watching the snowfall. Sun nite & time to crank up the grill in the snow..2 tenderloins cooked to perfection w/ red-skinned potatoes & asparagus all from the grill & a fave bottle of red...YUM!! Our desserts were fresh baked brownies & cookies in the pizza oven. BTW, the kitchen was awesome & had everything a chef could want! Thank you for opening this gorgeous home to us! Your attention to every detail is perfect! We loved the radiant floor heat, even on the patios! We had a lovely laidback birthday weekend & as we built our last cairn & checked out; the beautiful blue NM sunny sky was back with us for our roadtrip back home. What a way to spend a snow day!!!

What a lovely spot! Good directions to the casita. What a view! So peaceful, quiet and NO people--very private and comfortable. The hot tub was was an added plus---a treat. We enjoyed the indoor fireplace---too much wind for any outdoor fires. Loved Ghost Ranch--the hikes and the views. Gorgeous--went two times--a great place for hiking. We visited Puye Cliffs and had the full tour....very informative and interesting and would recommend. Went to Taos vis 84N-64E--took us up and over the mountains! Lovely scenery, The ride was better than the destination. Taos Pueblo was a disappointment. The shops in Taos are lovely and fun--we just weren't here to shop. The ride out to Monestery in the Desert was gorgeous! One lane dirt road for 14 miles off 84, following the Rio Chama. Spectacular scenery. What a lovely home and setup. Great panaramic views. Comfortable, clean--really enjoyed. Thank you so much.

We came here for skiing and relaxation--and boy did we get both!!!! Our first day, NM ski hills were low on snow, so we drove to Wolf Creek, CO and had a full day of fabulous skiing (and snowboarding). We returned to Casita del Lago to fix a wonderful meal and close out the night star gazing and relaxiing unused muscles in the hot tub. 2nd day: We hung around the casita to read, photograph, play games, and gourmet cook. We hit the hot tub a couple times. 3rd day: Ski Santa Fe. We got there early before it was crowded and had some of the best groomed trail skiing we have ever done.Finished the day with more hot tub and a movie! 4th Day: Taos Ski Valley--It's our favorite anywhere in the country! Great skiing, great fun, and an enjoyable drive back to Casita del Lago. What a magnificent and beautiful place this is. Just spectacular! Our peaceful skiing retreat in the quiet solitude of one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Next time we bring our wives (who don't like to ski). They will cherish this retreat while we ski!!!

Thank you for allowing us to share your lovely casita. You thought of everything when you designed this delightful vacation home! The views, of course, were God's doing; but the homesite and your thoughtful placement of everything else including the materials you chose were your doing. Brilliant lighting choices, heated flooring, and excellent furniture placement were well thought out. In fact, I would not change a thing and if I ever get a chance to build a vacation home, I hope you will design it and decorate it for me!! Wow!!

These past eight days have been filled with so many joys. Sara and I have been friends since preschool days, roomed together in college and were both art majors. We have enjoyed painting here daily and the gorgeous surroundings have been perfect for our hikes and sketches. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your hospitality, and for your thoughtfulness in making this lovely place so convenient for your guests..With best wishes....

If but the sky could be part of our soul and the trials of each day would not take their toll, we would be reminded of our true beauty and to love all as our solemn duty. Thankfully we have each other and the beauty of the memory of our time here. Love and peace to all.

Casita de Lago is truly a magical place. Today, my last morning here, I cam to feel a life in the mountains and cliffs that I never knew existed. As the sun rose the textures and life of the rocks cam alive, somewhat like a giant shade being drawn. It is a memory I will keep close to my heart as well as spending my 34th wedding anniversary here. I know that all of the wonderful people who make the trip out here and bring all their good karma only makes this place even better. I am honored to be one of these people.

I'm here with my cousins from Southampton, England. Each day your place grows on us more and more. Today we saw a lone coyote walk right past the windows. Unfortunately, last week in Durango I fell off a horse and ended up with surgery, and her I am healing each day in these serene surroundings. Just what the doctor ordered. Cheers!

Over the past nine days we've come to love this small part of a very big and beautiful state as much as your earlier guests - the Casita offers such peace and quiet each day. Incredible feat such beauty can be enjoyed in the midst of summer. Only one other (human) family seemed present in the area - though we saw the local coyote, hummingbird and enormous fish almost daily. Thank you for sharing your lovely house. - West Hartford, CT

Thanks! Too busy vacationing :) Will write on your website. Loved window vistas, outdoor chair for reading and hot tub for star gazing.

Stars, stars & more stars...we arrived late to a view of the milky-way that stretched across the sky, but even better was the glorious view that unfolded with the rising sun. We just love this home and do plan on returning, hopefully to see more of this wonderful land. We swam in the freezing lake, explored the grounds, visited Ghost Ranch, the Echo Ampitheater, Jemez Springs, Taos, Los Alamos, Bandalier & even ate one of Bode's Green Chili Cheezeburgers (try one!). Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience at your home. We love the views, the quiet and the spiritual nature of this land. We really enjoyed watching an "official" filming of "Cowboys & Aliens", right in front of the Casita! You know it must be beautiful when Hollywood wants to film it! Thanks again, your soon-to-be-neighbors!

Well Tom, your place is now famous. The film crew of the new movie being filmed in Abiquiu (Cowboys and Aliens starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford - being filmed at the Dar al Islam Mosque) filmed the water channel in front of your home for about 1/2 hour this morning. I took many photos so I will send you a couple when I get home for you to add to your book. It was spectacular to watch. The helicopter hovered over the water right in front of your home. Too cool.

We really loved the tranquility and beauty of the Casita and Lake Abiquiu (which we affectionately call A-bee-kee). Highlights of our trip include: - The Pedernal Art Tour - Bode's and The Frosty Cow -U.S. vs Algeria World Cup Win - Jet skiing on the Lake (Enchanged Adventures - you can also rent a ski boat!) - Dinner at Abiquiu Inn - Ghost Ranch - Chimney Rock hike - Hot tub and "chillaxing" - Awesome/comprehensive info book - sunsets/star gazing - jummping off the rock at Cerritos - chilly but refreshing dips in the lake. Thanks for the awesome memories.
