Anasazi Dreamin' Secluded w/ View

Welcome to Magic Rock. This unique house is set in the middle of 35 acres and is not visible from the road. You are one mile from Main St. Cortez, but feel like you are far from the city. This is the perfect place to do lots of interesting day trips of hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, hunting and exploring canyons for Anasazi ruins. You can see beautiful views of Mesa Verde and the La Platas Mountains while relaxing on the couch in the living room, or sitting out on the deck. The property has lots of historical and prehistorical sites of interest. Please feel free to explore around the property but do not take any pot shards, or other historical artifacts, or dig for them. We would like to keep it as untouched as possible for the next guests. The cold spring on the property was the first source of water for the town of Cortez. There are many Anasazi sites and some rock art on a large rock in the canyon, east of the house. Be careful getting down to see it. The eastern edge of the property runs down the middle of McElmo creek.

Magic Rock is within easy driving of Durango, Delores, Mancos, Mesa Verde, Canyon Lands, Four Corners Monument, Land of the Ancients, Telluride, Shiprock, Moab, the Delores and San Juan rivers, and lots of Anasazi points of interest. You could easily spend a week exploring all the local canyons. The Ute Mountain Casino is 11 miles away.

There is one bedroom with a queen size bed and then the sofa unfolds into a queen size bed. I've slept on the sofa bed and it is very comfortable. :^) The kitchen has stove, fridge, microwave, blender, toaster oven, crock pot, coffee grinder and coffee maker. Plenty of pots and pans for cooking and baking. Many spices are in the cupboard to the left of the stove. Lots of condiments in the refridgerator. If you enjoy drinking your wine out of crystal glasses or eating on fine china, this kitchen has what you need. There is a TV/DVD player that gets local station, also a TV in the bedroom. All the comforts of home!

This location is perfect for a stop over or extended stay. There is a three night rental minimum. $125nt/$600wk/$1800mo.. We do not accept credit cards.

Please call Kim, or email, if you are interested in this rental.

Historic, Very Unique, Secluded House on 35 Acres.

Year Purchased: 2006

Why the Owner Chose Cortez

I've always been interested in archeology and native american history and culture specifically. My friends mother lives in the area and told me about this great property that was for sale. It has all the characteristics of the Hawkins Preserve(across the canyon) but is privately owed. I bought it site unseen and have not regretted my hasty action.

The Unique Benefits at this House

This property and the surrounding area are full of history, from the Anaszi Indians, to the first white settelers in the area. On this 35 acers you will find the original water supply for the town of Mitchell Springs, to the remains of a black smith shop, and Indian ruins. It is close to town approx. 1 mile to Main St. It is close to Sand Canyon which offers hiking, biking, and horse trails among the ruins of the Native Americans, want to go fishing, boating? no problem, not to brag but we are truley situated with in a hour of anything you want to do. Mesa Verde National Park can be seen from the door step of this home and is only 9 miles away,Historic Durango is a 1 hour drive, library, rec. center, parks, tennis courts are all in town here.

Owner's Map of Cortez

I live in Alaska, but plan to move to this property when I reitre. I am very into the historical as well as natural wonders of this area. I hope you enjoy your stay at Magic Rock as much as I do.

I want to thank you for sharing your home. Magic Rock was so comfortable and decorated with a real feel of the history of the area. The view of Mesa Verde and the surrounding landscape was very beautiful. A small oasis in the history of time is Magic Rock. Had a great stay and enjoyed traveling the area. You have a great spot to retire.

Loved our stay here ;

We recently stayed here & loved it. It doesn't have a/c , but it was not needed as nightime temps , in August, were in the mid 50's & fans / air coolers kept us comfortable. Drinking water can be improved by placing a pitcher of water with a pinch of sale in fridge, overnight. [ Florida tip ] Makes good coffee & tea, then. Home had everything we needed to have a great week ! Great central location to many sites & so quiet & peaceful. I could see how Native Americans picked this area ! We highly recommend this site to others.

Owner response:Thanks Steve for the kind words. After you left we did install a permanent swamp cooler, so it should be cool day and night!

We stayed at this neat home for six nights, and were really pleased. The accommodations were wonderful for the two of us - very comfy bed, well equipped kitchen, great internet connection, good collection of artifacts and information, and a spectacular lightning display one evening. Really handy to see the sights of Cortez and Durango. We would certainly recommend this home to anyone planning to visit this area.

Very comfortable place

We enjoyed our stay here and found it as described, but more charming. If you want to be lazy, just sit on the couch and watch the San Juan mountains out the front window and Mesa Verde out the side window. We watched beautiful thunderstorms cross the mountains while the house was in sunshine. The owner is right that the water tastes very mineraly, so drinking water from town is a good idea. The location is perfect for day trips to Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, Canyons of the Ancients, and the Anasazi Cultural Center.

Owner response:I'm glad you liked it. Maybe next time you will be able to stay longer. Take care, Kim

My mother, daughter and I stayed at Magic Rock in October and we had a wonderful time. We visited 5 National Parks and 1 National Historical Park in 6 days. It was the perfect home base! Mesa Verde is only minutes away, we also did Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Canyon, and Chaco Canyon are within easy commute. The property itself is beautiful and even though it is only minutes from town you have complete privacy. The sunsets are amazing. The property owner was terrific to deal with and I can't say how grateful I am at how she helped me and my family out. We loved the whole experience and look forward to going back.

Owner response:Thanks Lynette. I'm glad everything worked out for you. Hope all is well with your family.

We stayed at Magic Rock for the Colorado portion of our road trip and we had a great time. The house was perfect for the three of us, and very comfortable. So close to Cortez, but you'd never know it standing on the deck. We enjoyed exploring the property and climbing around on the rocks. Well stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, movies, internet - I don't think anything was left out. Very short drive to Mesa Verde NP, and great mountain biking nearby. We would certainly stay her again when we come back to the area.

My husband and I spent 11 wonderful days and nights at Magic Rock. The location is ideal for exploring the 4-corners area. The property is an easy drive to Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and the spectacular Skyway Scenic drive just to name a few. We hiked and/or walked most every day - Sand Canyon is a spectacular area and is within minutes of Magic Rock. The house itself is well maintained. The kitchen has everything any cook could want to prepare the simplist of meals or gourmet delights. The views are beyond beautiful. From the front deck, or the living room sofa, there are outstanding views of the surrounding mountains and Mesa Verde....absolutely breathtaking. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular! All this plus 35-acres Magic Rock sits on....a facinating place to explore with an interesting history. Will we go back? - in a heart-beat. Thanks Kim for sharing Magic Rock with us!

We enjoyed our 3-night stay very much. Very clean, very well-stocked kitchen, comfortable, beautiful views and quiet setting and terrific location! The local contact was very, very helpful answering questions. The fold out couch was very comfortable. We highly recommend this house for a home base in the four-corners area.
