Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1995
This photo was taken on a hike at Rincon de la Vieja, north of Liberia, in Costa Rica. It's a place we would be happy to return to again and again. We have thought of Costa Rica as our retirement home since long before retirement, which just came for Alice in 2007. Mike continues to work in the Fall and Spring, in New York; when he's not working, we're in Nosara, unless travel elsewhere keeps us away. We're at the cutting edge of the Baby Boom, having been born in 1945, and we're glad we beat the rush to Costa Rica. We have never been sorry to have made this choice and we look forward to many years of happy retirement in the Nosara area.
Why the Owner Chose Nosara
We were especially attracted to Costa Rica by what seemed to us to be the country's wise priorities in public policy. Nationwide, guaranteed health care for all; a 96% literacy rate; the abolition of the army; Costa Ricans' obvious pride in their reputation as a peaceful nation -- all these things led us to explore Costa Rica. One visit made us lovers.
We chose Nosara because someone in line with us at the airport, upon hearing we were in search of retirement property, said, "Don't buy anything until you've been to Nosara." In Nosara, we found a long-standing community of expats near a beautiful beach. Over the years, Nosara's expat community has fought to maintain its pristine beach, its array of wildlife, and its low-key approach to tropical living. Ours is an expatriot community that enjoys close involvement and excellent relations with its Costa Rican host community. We are happy to be a part of this responsible and active community of talented, capable and generous people.
The Unique Benefits of this
When we are in Nosara, we take advantage of our location. Mike exercises on the beach daily; Alice participates in organized exercise classes. We rise early, and we go to bed early, typically finishing dinner by 7:30 and going to bed within an hour or so of that time. We play bridge as often as we can, hosting a bi-weekly duplicate game at our home. Mike teaches bridge lessons and we've enjoyed watching the growth in sophistication of bridge in Nosara, as more and more players begin to devote time and energy to improving their games. We've had to work hard to keep up, and it's been a fun aspect of our life at Nosara.
We also take great pleasure in sharing Costa Rica with others. Our daughters and their partners, our two grandchildren, and many friends and family members have spent time with us at Nosara. We enjoy seeing them come to love Costa Rica as well.
Our friend, Sonny Schneiderhan, has created some beautiful gardens for us. We begin and end our days on our front terrace, enjoying the pleasure of the garden Sonny built there. We especially enjoy the back garden when we are in the swimming pool or on its deck. We will forever be grateful to Sonny for the hours and hours of pleasure she has given us through these gardens.
