Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1995
This photo was taken on a hike at Rincon de la Vieja, north of Liberia, in Costa Rica. It's a place we would be happy to return to again and again. We have thought of Costa Rica as our retirement home since long before retirement, which just came for Alice in 2007. Mike continues to work in the Fall and Spring, in New York; when he's not working, we're in Nosara, unless travel elsewhere keeps us away. We're at the cutting edge of the Baby Boom, having been born in 1945, and we're glad we beat the rush to Costa Rica. We have never been sorry to have made this choice and we look forward to many years of happy retirement in the Nosara area.
Why the Owner Chose Nosara
We were especially attracted to Costa Rica by what seemed to us to be the country's wise priorities in public policy. Nationwide, guaranteed health care for all; a 96% literacy rate; the abolition of the army; Costa Ricans' obvious pride in their reputation as a peaceful nation -- all these things led us to explore Costa Rica. One visit made us lovers.
We chose Nosara because someone in line with us at the airport, upon hearing we were in search of retirement property, said, "Don't buy anything until you've been to Nosara." In Nosara, we found a long-standing community of expats near a beautiful beach. Over the years, Nosara's expat community has fought to maintain its pristine beach, its array of wildlife, and its low-key approach to tropical living. Ours is an expatriot community that enjoys close involvement and excellent relations with its Costa Rican host community. We are happy to be a part of this responsible and active community of talented, capable and generous people.
The Unique Benefits of this Private Home and Guest House
When we are in Nosara, we take advantage of our location. Mike exercises on the beach daily; Alice participates in organized exercise classes. We rise early, and we go to bed early, typically finishing dinner by 7:30 and going to bed within an hour or so of that time. We play bridge as often as we can, hosting a bi-weekly duplicate game at our home. Mike teaches bridge lessons and we've enjoyed watching the growth in sophistication of bridge in Nosara, as more and more players begin to devote time and energy to improving their games. We've had to work hard to keep up, and it's been a fun aspect of our life at Nosara.
We also take great pleasure in sharing Costa Rica with others. Our daughters and their partners, our two grandchildren, and many friends and family members have spent time with us at Nosara. We enjoy seeing them come to love Costa Rica as well.
Our friend, Sonny Schneiderhan, has created some beautiful gardens for us. We begin and end our days on our front terrace, enjoying the pleasure of the garden Sonny built there. We especially enjoy the back garden when we are in the swimming pool or on its deck. We will forever be grateful to Sonny for the hours and hours of pleasure she has given us through these gardens.

Dear Alice and Michael, Although we have never met, I feel as if I know you. Perhaps that's because of the wonderful week I spent recently at your house in Costa Rica with my daugther and family. It was a vacation I will always remember. Arriving at your most comfortable home in Nosara made the drive from San Jose worthwhile. Once there, you just seem to relax and forget what is going on in the rest of the world. Your website is a great introduction for a visit to your home. The house, the pool, the beach (what amazing sunsets!), the monkeys, the birds, the restaurants, horseback riding, kayaking, -- we enjoyed it all. I think the only thing we missed were the turtles. Hopefully we can see them on another trip. We enjoyed the trip (love the area) so much we would like to go again sometime. Idaly and Bobbi were great and so helpful. Bobbi answered all our questions and gave us lots of advice. Ida cooked us many delicious meals and kept us provided with clean towels. She is a very sweet person and so easy to have around. We also got to know Rita and enjoyed watching the monkeys in her yard. Your gardens are lovely! Sincerely, Gail S.

It was absolutely fabulous, and we all want to move to Nosara. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity. I just can't stop telling everyone how beautiful it is. Swimming at Playa Guiones at sunset every evening did it for me. Michael enjoyed being able to truly relax. After just a day he said, "this is the only kind of vacation worth taking." My entire family loved your home finding it very accomodating. Andrew learned how to swim for real in your pool. Bobbi was very attentive to our needs especially with the delivery of groceries, acting as an interpretor, and arranging Ida to cook. Ida took care of the eight of us making sure that we were well fed at breakfast and lunch and that our laundry didn't pile up. At the end of the trip, I seriously considered asking her to come home with us. We got to know your neighbor, Rita, a bit. She invited us over to watch the monkies (another highlight of the trip), and we had her to lunch one day. We were there for four or five days before we got any rain, and when it did rain it didn't last too long. We definitely would like to visit again, if we don't move there before then.

It's been almost three weeks since we've been back at home and it has taken too long to write to tell you what an amazing time we all had at the house. We had a six glorious days in fine accommodations. Your neighbors were lovely and friendly. I have recommended the house to numerous friends. We are all agreed that we will be back very soon to enjoy Nosara, the Olson house and "pura vida"

We returned 3 weeks ago from our trip to Costa Rica. It was an absolutely fabulous week. The Olsons really have a little bit of paradise in Costa Rica. If anyone is looking for a marvelous vacation in a beautiful country, check out this property on their web site. It was so wonderful..
