LUXURIATE IN A SPACIOUS GETAWAY RETREAT!

Located in breezy North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, MAUI VIEWS KOHALA GUEST HOUSE** is situated in the pastoral landscape surrounding the former sugar plantation town of Hawi. Tucked away in the historical section of town known as Kokoiki, MAUI VIEWS KOHALA provides a unique opportunity to experience Hawaii in a serene country setting. Sitting atop expansive fields, breathtaking views of Maui make this sister island appear as though conjured by the blue Pacific. Kokoiki is Hawaiian for “little blood," and is the actual birth place of King Kamehameha the Great. Interestingly, we are also situated along the only ½ mile of true north on the Big Island!

Built before Hawaii was a state and for years a hula school or "halau," MAUI VIEWS KOHALA GUEST HOUSE has been completely restored, creating touches of elegance yet deeply respecting the spirit of the land it sits upon. Visitors, family and friends constantly remark on the peaceful feel of the place. This historic area, once designated as a nature park and graced with old growth Norfolk pines, ironwoods, Samoan coconut trees and panoramic fields, does seem endowed with tranquility - augmented by our citrus, banana and papaya orchard and a budding tropical landscape.

Your arrival into Hawi can happen in two ways: From Waimea, drive up and over the perennially green Kohala Mountain Road where you can pull over and gaze down at Kawaihae harbor, all the island's major mountains, and her western shoreline. Or come in through Kawaihae along the Ocean Road where, during whale season, you can watch humpbacks breaching right from your car or at various overlook sites, often interspersed with pods of spinner dolphins. Our region of North Kohala, known to most islanders simply as "Kohala," with her natural wonders and striking beauty, is truly a special place. Experience the feel of a more traditional Hawaii with its aloha spirit, slow pace and artful shops. Dine on local fare and/or buy your own fresh organic produce at the weekly farmers’ market. Stop for lunch in nearby Kapa’au and visit the historical Kamehameha statue. And while you’re at it, take advantage of a number of activities and/or healing modalities. Or simply hit the beach and come back to relax on the deck overlooking open fields and the vast turquoise ocean.

No matter where you choose to stay on this beautiful island, you will want to explore and see what you can of the volcano, the beaches, the incredible mountains, forests and landscapes. Maui Views Kohala is only minutes from the most desirable resort beaches on the island. At the same time in the opposite direction, we are only minutes from the rugged cliffs and black sand beaches of Pololu Valley. Our location allows you to enjoy the best of all worlds - panoramic ocean views, fabulous cafes and galleries, nature gazing and/or activities, a great farmers' market and outstanding local entertainment. (Be sure and check out our informative blog - link provided on this listing page!)

Conde Nast defines as Intelligent Luxury a better way to travel, to live and to be more sustainable. We pride ourselves on providing an affordable experience in sustainable luxury for the Hawaii island traveler. From the renovation of a landmark hula school into our guest house, we've taken care to reuse and recycle any materials possible. You lodge in a well insulated structure which uses ceiling fans (no a/c needed), filtered & solar heated potable water, recycling and compost bins, recycled trash bags, chemical-free cleaners and more. Energy star appliances are complemented by a custom interior. You never feel as though you are 'giving up' anything for sustainability, as you are surrounded with peace, beauty, and tranquility in a clean, well kept environment. All our water is great for drinking (no bottled water necessary, and no itchy chlorine in your shower!). Low impact use with a high level of comfort is our goal. We create your vacation space with what we most yearn for when traveling ourselves. Star gazing is encouraged at night, where the absence of city lights gives Mother Nature center stage. Surround yourself with beauty and comfort while experiencing a forgotten slice of island living.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2006

Bela and Chris Johnson came to Hawaii from Maine, where we lived for many years in the woods on a beautiful lake, 40 minutes from Bar Harbor.

Twenty years ago we tried escaping long winters by moving to Moloka'i. On this small island, we learned to appreciate "Old Hawaii" with its customs and breathtaking scenery, its unique culture and people. We supported ourselves by running a small guest house and gift shop. After two years we returned to Maine so the kids could finish school, and finally moved to the Big Island for good in 2005.

Chris is a builder and licensed General Contractor who loves working with his hands. Bela is a longtime Medical Intuitive/Life Coach who has a passion for writing poetry and prose, home design and landscaping. We love our Big Island life with all its beauty and variety, and enjoy bicycling, hiking and of course snorkeling, swimming, kayaking and bodysurfing in the beautiful blue Pacific ocean.

We look forward to sharing our aloha and knowledge of the Big Island in order to help you experience the best vacation for your particular interests!

Why the Owner Chose Hawi

Since Chris is a builder and Bela loves to design homes, we were drawn to purchase this property with its amazing views of Maui, even though the buildings were in dire need of upgrading. For the past five years, we have worked diligently to remodel 5000 square feet of living space. We love the special neighborhood of Kokoiki here in Kohala, where peace, quiet and exquisite ocean views, sunsets and verdant landscapes greet us every day. And we love opening our Guest House to you so you might experience the mana, or magical power, of this place we call home!

The Unique Benefits of this House

We offer a choice of this upstairs suite, a downstairs room, or both.** Located in our two-story remodeled guest house, the suite offers sweeping views of fields, ocean, and Maui - and little else (no close houses or visible highway). It has a large open floor plan with breathtaking ocean views throughout. Comfort and sustainability are our goals. We offer you a memory foam bed, comfortable foam futons in the living room area, and a roomy tile shower with a glass door and a high-set shower head for taller guests in the master bath. All water is potable and filtered, even your bathing water. A dining table is offered in your suite as well as full access to a well-appointed shared custom kitchen and pleasant dining room downstairs. Outdoor deck is shaded by a huge old cypress tree and surrounded by a flowering landscape. It offers a breezy ocean view with bistro tables for alfresco dining. Or relax in the double hammock overlooking the ocean.

Quiet is at a premium in our hectic world - if it's quiet, simple beauty, panoramic views and nighttime stargazing you seek, you will not be disappointed! Visit nearby resorts and restaurants for all they offer, then come back to the peace and tranquility of this place. You will then return home with a renewed sense of vitality and inner peace. And if you are an animal lover, we have two dogs, Chudleigh and Susami, who are more than willing to share their love and time with you, if desired.

**This listing is for our upstairs suite only. If calendar is booked, be sure and contact us anyway - we also have a room, VRBO#273987. It sleeps 2 comfortably on a queen-sized innerspring futon, with the same expansive views of Maui and the ocean!

**There is also the option of renting the entire Guest House, especially suggested if you want to bring children along (as we advertise a quiet retreat for all our guests). Contact us for rates and details.

Though we didn't get to chat with Chris and Bela enough because we were off riding horses, looking for whales, swimming, snorkeling and viewing the night sky from Mauna Kea, we appreciated the "breakfast fare," replenishing the delicious fruits, coffee and other goodies daily. We loved beginning to ending each day's adventure in such a beautiful, welcoming place. Being greeted by your friendly dogs was an added delight and watching the whitecaps and the dancing palms seen through the picture window was wonderfully relaxing. Everything was perfect. Many thanks.

Thanks so much for sharing this lovely place with us. We loved the quiet rural setting, and the furnishings were so comfortable. Maui didn't really show itself until our last day, but the view was great just the same. Mahalo.

We came to Maui Views filled with the stress and challenges of the past 2 years all welled up within us. We needed a quiet sanctuary to restore our souls, to renew our spirit and to heal our hearts from the terrible thrashing we were feeling from our lives. Having spent many vacations on Maui, taking a vacation on the Big Island brought familiarity by experiencing the peace and quiet of Maui Views. It was very easy to get around from here, especially since our desire to be away from the busy rat race of people, the city and traffic was satisfied here at Maui Views. The accommodations were 5 STAR. We are so grateful for the comfortable bed and living space - kitchen facilities, delicious food and fresh fruit! Oh yeah, did we mention the most awesome whale-watching from our living room window, with Maui standing guard on the horizon. Thank you, Bela and Chris, for sharing your wonderful ohana with us. Best of luck with your future endeavors! Mahalo!
