Location: Hawi, Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii, USA (1 Hr North of Kona Airport and 2 Miles Outside Hawi Town)
Accommodations: House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
Located in breezy North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, MAUI VIEWS KOHALA Guest House** is situated in the pastoral landscape surrounding the former sugar plantation town of Hawi. A 40 minute drive over the Kohala Mountain Road to Waimea (Kamuela) or a half-hour's ocean drive to west-end resort beaches, Hawi draws folks in with its colorful shops and restaurants (see our Maui Views Kohala blog for updates and info).
For who could ever tire of traveling over Route 250 (said Mountain Road) where you can pull over to marvel at amazing panoramic views of all the island’s major mountains and its western shoreline? Or choose awe-inspiring Route 270, the so-called Ocean Road, where, from December through April, you can view humpback whales right from your car, along with pods of spinner dolphins.
Tucked away in this sleepy little town halfway between mile markers 19 & 20, MAUI VIEWS KOHALA is a unique opportunity to join us in experiencing Old Hawaii in a serene country setting. Sitting atop expansive fields, breathtaking views of Maui make this sister island appear as though conjured by the blue Pacific. We are located in the ancient neighborhood of Kokoiki, Hawaiian for “little blood.” Kokoiki is the actual birth place of King Kamehameha the Great and is situated along the only ½ mile of true north on the Big Island.
Hawi has much to offer. Experience the feel of Old Hawaii with its tropical landscape, slow pace and funky little shops – only minutes from the black sands of Pololu Valley to the east, or the white sand resort beaches to the west. Shop in a vast array of galleries – dine on local fare – or buy your own fresh organic produce at the weekly farmers’ market.
Stop for lunch in nearby Kapa’au and visit the historical Kamehameha statue. And while you’re at it, take advantage of a number of activities and/or healing modalities (see our blog for more info). Or simply hit the beach and come back to relax on the deck overlooking open fields and the vast turquoise ocean.
Built before Hawaii was a state and for years a hula school for young women, MAUI VIEWS KOHALA has been completely restored, creating touches of elegance yet deeply respecting the spirit of the land it sits upon.
All our water is solar heated with electric backup and filtered (no chlorinated showers!). Low impact use with a high level of comfort is our goal. We create your vacation space with what we most yearn for, when traveling ourselves.
This area of Kokoiki was once designated as a nature park, and is surrounded by old growth Norfolk pines, ironwoods, Samoan coconut trees and lush fields and landscape. Star gazing is encouraged at night, where the absence of city lights gives Mother Nature center stage. Surround yourself with beauty and comfort while experiencing a forgotten slice of island living.
**MAUI VIEWS KOHALA welcomes respectful human beings from all walks of life. We do not discriminate based on lifestyle or gender.
**IF CALENDAR IS BOOKED, contact us anyway. Only the suite is listed here and we have a downstairs room that may be available with full ocean view that accommodates 2 comfortably on a queen-sized innerspring futon.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2006
My husband and I came to Hawaii from Maine, where we lived for many years in the woods on a beautiful lake, 40 minutes from Bar Harbor. Twenty years ago we tried escaping long winters by moving to Moloka'i. On this small island, we learned to appreciate "Old Hawaii" with its customs and breathtaking scenery - and its beautiful people. We supported ourselves by running a small guest house and gift shop. After two years we returned to Maine so the kids could finish school, and finally moved to the Big Island for good in 2005. We love our Big Island life with all its beauty and variety, and enjoy hiking, bicycling, and of course snorkeling, swimming, kayaking and bodysurfing in the beautiful blue Pacific ocean. Chris is a builder and licensed contractor who loves working with his hands. Bela is a longtime Medical Intuitive/Life Coach who writes poetry and prose and is an avid landscaper/gardener. We look forward to sharing our aloha and knowledge of the Big Island in order to help you experience the best vacation for your particular interests! Bela and Chris Johnson
Why the Owner Chose Hawi
Since Chris is a builder and Bela loves to design homes, we decided to purchase this property with its amazing views of Maui, even though its buildings were in dire need of upgrading. For the past three years we have worked diligently to remodel 5000 square feet of living space. We love the special neighborhood of Kokoiki here in Kohala, where peace, quiet and exquisite ocean views, sunsets and verdant landscapes greet us every day. We look forward to opening our guest quarters to you so you might explore this lovely island of Hawaii!
The Unique Benefits of this House
You have a choice of an upstairs suite or downstairs room (or both)**, located in a two-story remodeled house with attached deck downstairs. The upstairs suite offers sweeping views of fields, ocean, and Maui - and little else (no close houses or visible highway). Suite has an open floor plan with ocean views throughout. Comfort is our goal, offering you a memory foam bed, comfortable foam futons in the living room area, and a roomy tile shower with a glass door and a high-set shower head for taller guests in the private bath. All water is potable and filtered, even your bathing water (no chlorine!). A small dining table is offered in the upstairs suite, as well as full access to a shared kitchen and large dining table downstairs. An outdoor deck with ocean view is shaded by a huge old cypress tree and offers breezy seating areas as well as small tables for alfresco dining. Quiet is at a premium in our hectic world - if it's quiet, simple beauty, panoramic views and nighttime stargazing you seek, you will not be disappointed! Visit the nearby resorts and restaurants for all your socializing and entertainment, then come back to the peace and tranquility of this place. You will then return home with a renewed sense of vitality and inner peace. And if you are an animal lover, we have two dogs, Chudleigh and Susami, who are more than willing to share their love and time with you, if desired. Petey our horse, and Stella and Willa, our two black sheep, live in the field nearby.
**Only the suite is officially listed here. Our room listing VRBO#273987 is also worth checking out. If calendar is booked during the time you wish to stay, be sure and contact us anyway. The room may be available. This room sleeps 2 comfortably on a queen-sized innerspring futon.

Positive Rating
It's been such a pleasure staying with you, thanks so much for that. As we mentioned a few times, the view up there is so amazing, as is the suite. We're sure that it's one of the best places to stay on the island. The price is great too. Also we were very happy and found that so nice of you, that you included (things we didn't expect!). We felt very welcome and it really was a pleasure getting to know you and talking to you about (America) or places to go on the island, which was so helpful. So we're off to Maui now and we're looking forward to it, but we're also a bit sad having to leave this wonderful, tranquil place. Thanks so much for your kindness.

Thank you for your hospitality and your generosity of spirit. It's been wonderful getting to know the family, each unique and kind and competent and accomplished. The place is great, of course, and the people are even better. Thank you for making our stay a memorable one and one that I will look back on with fondness.
