Location: Amboise, Centre-Loire Valley, France, Europe

Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-6)

Location: Amboise, Centre-Loire Valley

Accommodation: newly renovated beautiful loft in a house on the waterfront just opposite the castle:

Loft (sleeps 4 - 6): 2 bedrooms + 1 sofa bed in the living-room, kitchenette, bathroom.

This charming two bedroom apartment has one of the best views of the Chateau d’Amboise in the city. You can gaze at its beauty while dining or doing dishes, or even as you wake in the morning. The apartment is on the second floor (U.S.) of a small house on the l’Île d’Or, one of the islands in the Loire that are part of the city of Amboise. The island is the perfect place to stay when you want to visit the sites, but want somewhere calm and restful to stay after long days of sightseeing. The Porte Bleue is located right on the bank of the Loire, directly across from the castle, thus providing a truly unbelievable view of the castle when you look out the windows or walk out your door. Yet you are only a two minute walk from the castle and downtown, and a 10 minute walk from the train station.

The apartment itself has two bedrooms, one with a king size bed and the other with a king size bed that can be made into two twin beds as well. There is an open living room and dining room combination. The dining area has a table for four, a small desk where you can work on your computer or write in your journal, and a window overlooking the river and the castle. The living area has a sofa bed which can serve as additional sleeping space if needed, another small love seat and chair. There are no antiques or family heirlooms, but the space is very comfortable and cozy—it is not a “show” space, but a space for living. The kitchen is separated by a counter from the living room and dining room area. It is small, but very functional and has everything you will need to prepare meals or enjoy what you bought from local markets or shops. There is a ceramic stove top, an oven, a dishwasher, a refrigerator, a coffeemaker, and an assortment of pans, plates, silverware, and serving pieces.

Your host, Chantal, lives quite close (just around the corner) and is always available to answer questions and help whenever needed. While she is not fluent in English communicating with guests has never been a problem, and she will do her best to see that all of your needs are addressed. She is passionate about Amboise and about helping those visiting have a wonderful time.

Amboise itself has a wealth of things to do. Certainly the castle serves as a focal point, but there is also Clos Lucé which is Da Vinci’s final home now a museum and tribute to his genius. The bi-weekly market is the largest in the region and well worth a visit. The small downtown is filled with interesting shops and restaurants, and a stroll along the Loire is a must, especially at sunset or in the evening. In addition, Amboise is the perfect place from which to explore the Loire valley, one of the most beautiful areas of France. It is only 20 minutes to Chenonceau (or 50 minutes by bike) which is a must see (you can also get to Chenonceau by bus or train). Villandry and its amazing gardens are only about 45 minutes (or 2 hours by bike). And there are dozens of other castles to visit in the nearby vicinity as well (including Ussé the Sleeping Beauty castle, the amazing Chambord, and others). But there is much more to do than just the castles. You can go to Tours, the fourth largest city in France, to visit the Musée des Beaux Art or the old city. You can visit vineyards and taste wine, from Montlouis sur Loire to Vouvray to Chinon. The bike path along the Loire makes for a wonderful way to travel and visit some of the sites, and there are several places in Amboise to rent bikes—for an hour, a day, or a week. There is enough to do in the area to keep you busy for weeks, and you may just fall in love with the Porte Bleue and decide to stay!

If the loft is taken please contact me as there is a second rental in the same house on the first floor which sleeps 2 - 3.

    • My husband and I visited four cities in France, and Amboise was my favorite because of how lovely our experience was at La Porte Bleue. Chantal was a wonderful host, she even picked us up from the train station! The apartment was the best and the least expensive of all the places we stayed at. We couldn't get over the peace and quiet, such a change of pace from Paris! The view of the Chateau de Amboise from our dining room window was breathtaking. The apartment had more than we needed, we felt at home immediately. We were very disappointed our stay was only two days. If we hadn't booked our train tickets already , we would have extended our stay. We stayed in the upper level of La Porte Bleu, and the photos do not do this place justice. We cannot wait until we can come back, and we want to bring our entire family! We wouldn't think of staying anywhere but La Porte Bleu.

    • A wonderful apartment with a superb location in the Loire Valley and gorgeous views of the Chateau from your window. We spent three nights with two children and could have stayed for six weeks. Chantal is a lovely hostess and treated us like family. Well-appointed, comfortable, clean and modern, including wifi, an iPod stereo, and a full kitchen stocked with everything you need for a full meal. Easy access to wine, chateaux and beautiful country, as well as walking access to restaurants, shops and the Chateau d'Amboise. Highly recommended.

    • We have stayed in La Porte Bleue three times now and feel it is a home away from home. Chantal is a wonderful host and the apartment is lovely, just what we need to relax and enjoy the best of the Loire valley. It is comfortable and easy to live in. And Amboise is the ideal place to explore the Loire valley, but also France. Only 2 hours from Paris or the west coast. So...we fell in love with Amboise, but also with Chantal and her lovely apartments. We can't wait to go back.
