My husband David and I stayed in this rural paradise for 5 nights. We are sorry to leave. So peaceful, quiet, soul-refreshing. Last night in my outdoor bath, a light rain fell on me. We felt deliciously isolated, but within a 10-minute walk we found yoga, golf, the community centre and shopping. I enjoyed the reversion to more primitive habits: no lights in the evening (stunning star gazing!) and living off-grid. We'll be back! For those travelers who value experiencing old Hawaii, this is the place for you.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

The other two reviewers hit the nail on the head, but i'll add my two cents for fun. This place is special! I had the good fortune to stay at this breathtakingly beautiful property for two months. My family of 3 recently relocated to North Kohala and while waiting for our new home to be ready we needed a place to stay in the interim. I felt blessed to have found the ranch at kapa'au. It was exactly what we wanted; simple, but well appointed, cozy, and serene, it was the perfect spot to post up while our new house was in escrow. The structure itself is unique. The outdoor bath and shower are heavenly. The views from the property stretch to Maui and beyond. As a lover of long walks and runs there were many places to explore from right outside the door, and the town of kapa'au is close enough to walk to for coffee, yoga or art gallerys. Special thanks to Evelyn our gem of a property manager. She saw to it that all of our needs were met promptly and with a smile and a laugh. Happy to move into our new home, but sad to say goodbye to the kapa'au ranch guest house. If you are looking to get off the beaten path and be closer to nature like I was, this place is highly recommended!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

I had the tremendous fortune of staying here for a week. The home is beautifully designed on a gorgeous property, with a view of the ocean and on the edge of a gulch. The large barn doors can be left open in such a way that brings the presence of the land inside. It is so private, simple, and peaceful - it makes an ideal retreat. I deeply appreciated the attention that was made to building a sustainable home and loved re-visiting the simplicity of living off-grid. The outdoor bathtub and shower are heaven. The horses in the adjacent pasture are sweet, and the farmer neighbors down the road are lovely. The location is perfect for those who love the rural community of North Kohala, yet not too far from the favorite beaches of South Kohala. I agree with the other reviewer - I was reluctant to review because I hope it will be available when I visit next time!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

I rented this spectacular home for an extended vacation stay and I couldn't leave! I stayed for 4 months! This is country living at it's most serene and the property is stunning. It is ultra-private, very quiet, pitch dark at night (unless there's a moon) revealing an astonishing view of stars and it's breezy most of the time which keeps it cool for sleeping and no bugs! The outdoor shower is a pure joy (never runs out of hot) and the lanai is perfect for grilling and dining. I almost don't want to write about how great this place is so that it will be available to me next time i go but that wouldn't be fair. If you want to get away from the Disneyland version of Hawaii and enjoy some real serenity and pastoral Hawaiian beauty, this is the spot.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
