Location: Webster Springs, West Virginia, USA (At Elk River and its Back Fork near Bergoo, WV)
Accommodations: Cabin, 4 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 7-8)
Keywords: peaceful mountain, fishing, hiking, hunting, share with grapes, apples, raspberries, blueberries, and ramps in season
Fly fish the fabulous Elk River and its back fork then come back to your stunning mountain cabin to crystal clean air and the best-tasting spring water on earth, and mountain-top views set within a gorgeous hardwood forest on 18 acres with no fencing. Lumber companies conveniently left a great 1 mile gravel road from the main highway 15 and the surrounding virgin forest creates utter privacy.
Summer sightings include deer and fawns, squirrels, birds and fields of butterflies. When our children were young they'd roof-watch the wildlife that didn't come into the clearing, and the on-site blueberries in summer and apples in the fall ensure bear and cub sightings nearby.
Only 45 minutes to Snow Shoe for high life, or about the same from Elkins. Wander the West Virginia-priced (inexpensive) antique shops with terrific finds, or find some weekend mountain music at the many heritage weekends, where relations near and far visit for a town family reunion. Remind yourself and the kids how life was "back when."
The cabin (called a "camp" in the mountains) was lovingly hand-crafted from 26 kinds of timber by a master carpenter. There is central air, radiant heating if you'd rather, a grill and smoker, unlimited hard line calls, a new television with satellite, a washer/dryer/microwave, games, and plenty of books for reading during your stay.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1984
We enjoy our houses in Montana, Texas and West Virginia, in addition to a hunt club on Maryland's Eastern Shore. There isn't time for every hobby, so we rent, barter, or let children and friends enjoy these softer lifestyles. These houses lend down-time for our public policy writing, and you would have heard of many of the politicians who have shared quarters.
Why the Owner Chose Webster Springs
We particularly wanted a cool retreat from the Washington, DC summers and somewhere our five children could experience something besides pavement. Brining visitors, but not too many visitors, into the unspoiled mountain culture has been rewarding for our team of renovators and for us.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
We have a few rituals -- food is cheap, time stretches, the porch is huge and the television doesn't get turned on. We play Country & Western when we come home from early morning fly fishing or hunting, and just sit lazily and talk or play board games ... that is part of the fun.

We arrived at cabin at Wednesday Dec 28-2011.We had 5 days ahead of us,to spend in this-in its own way magical place. We were traveling from Charlotte, where in the morning, was sunny and beautiful day for our 6 hour road trip.As we were approaching the region of WV,where the cabin is located, country around us was slowly changing into powdered white snow nature. So,our arrival at cabin was just perfect as we were praying for real winter weather,to be able ski during our stay in Snowshoe or,in case of more nature snow, around on cross-country skis..even our skis,we carried on roof, were having happy face's when they saw the snow around :)Place looked just winter-white peaceful and house had inviting aura, with all that snow around. When we get inside,we were very pleased. It is such a cozy interior.Old traditional wood floor, decoration accents, wood stove-we did use to warm our place every evening, butcher table-for cutting our vegetables and prepare our meals, lot of space for everybody to accommodate,private-very comfortable bedrooms-BEST SLEEP upstairs!!!-where you access through extraordinary wooden turning stairs, and LOT&LOT of great books all around(better then some libraries!!)..and more interesting things to notice around the house as this place has lot of history for sure..The toilet system is just something I did really like a lot. Some people may feel little uncomfortable at first moment, but I love it and I think,we all should start thinking more about using environment friendly technologies in our life's,to safe mother nature and preserve our valuable and irreplaceable water!!! We spend lot of time outside on porch, even it was cold out there-but crisp and sharp air was refreshing to breathe-WOW-night sky-can't find satisfying word's for it-you must see it :) We walk around during a day-woods are deep and full of soul of WV forest-quite and sleeping during the winter-hope,we will come back,to see it at other seasons also!!We went ski to Snowshoe one day,it is 45 minutes easy drive and to Canaan Valley second day,it's about 2 hours-but great skiing-not crowded as Snowshoe is.We had just wonderful time and our memories will last from time we spend at your cabin,Mrs.Donna! Our 4-legged family member Labrador Benjamin enjoyed his stay as well, with lot of freedom running while we walked woods.Thank you,SOOO MUCH,for sharing your cabin with us!Hope we come back in other seasons,to explore the area even more! Sona,Jiri,Jessie,Radim and Benji (Czech,Croatia,US)
Owner response:Thank you Sona! We have had such a terrrific time getting to know all our terrific guests and knowing that their families have the same reaction that our kids and we have ... it is great to share the WV mountain country experience with each of you.

Once we arrived at the camp, we didn't leave. We loved it! The kitchen and living room area was roomy and able to accommodate all 6 of us easily. The owner was extremely helpful and informative of the area. I wish we had more time, but we simply enjoyed the mountain, the snow, the trails, and riding our ATVs and Dirt Bikes. I would recommend this to others as a wonderful get-a-way to enjoy and appreciate nature and just relax! Unique toilet system-different--but not a problem. Thank you for sharing your home! Would love to come back again!
Owner response:Thank you Ann! We've been so delighted to read all the cards, emails, and even web comments -- compliments like this are why we keep our vacation house open to guests. We highly recommend the process to other owners: it employs locals for housekeeping and repairs if you live far away; any left over "profit" (that doesn't go to taxes) is so welcome for upgrade money. But absolutely, most of all, you meet guests like Ann; Americans are an amazingly wonderful tribe!

When taking our 4 kids on vacation often relaxing is not the term I use, but in the case of this wonderful West Virginia vacation that is exactly what we got. The cabin itself offers many unique features that required much exploration by all of us. There was the frontporch, the spiral staircase, the unique toileting system (wonderful to use), and many unique pictures/momentos on the walls. The grounds are peaceful, beautiful, and with lots of room for exploring right out your back door. We had marshmallows every night by the fire pit, and missed the fresh fruit on the property by a week or two! The owners of this cabin are very accommodating. Enjoy your stay, we did!
Owner response:our guests and comments like this make managing a property rewarding and worthwhile!

Hello Donna and David, Thank you for sharing your mountain top home with us. Although we had six straight days of torrential rain and dense fog, we still managed to have a genuinely good time. Watching the ever changing palette of the fog and clouds rolling over the mountain tops was fascinating. I'd love to return in the fall to see the foliage in all it's splendor.

We visited the property during the summer (August 2010) and found the house not clean and with mice "signals" all over the place (even inside pots and pans in the lower cabinets). Enough for spoiling the whole holiday and for discouraging everyone to stay here.
Owner response:We were full all spring, summer and fall and have had more than 45 groups in the house this year alone. This is the only guest who had any such complaint since we opened and she is writing a full 5 months later. She stayed one night then called at dark. We immediately sent a cleaner over with apologies and ready to clean that night. The cleaners was all the pots and pans were drug onto the floor, the beds were scooted out to the center of the floor, and things were topsy-turvy. We could not find evidence to support her claim but offered to clean everything again immediately or to clean at her convenience. She said she was out that next afternoon. The cleaner and her son took bleach and wiped all surfaces and the floors, washed all the dishes, and then spent 4 hours recleaning everything else. There are "silent" (silent to humans; sirens to rodents) rodent repellers on 24/7 since this house is in the country and field mice are known to come in to look for water in the winter or food if left on the counters regularly. There are poisons in the areas where pets and humans cannot reach, not as needed but as a deterent so they are never needed. This house has a thorough cleaning on a regular basis -- I would not stay in it myself otherwise. The tenant stayed the week with no further complaints.

We spent 12 days here in October, the leaves and mountains were beautiful. The house is so amazing and comfortable. The architecture is so unique and your are always noticing something your hadn't seen before. One word of caution, don't lock yourself into to many off -premises activities, because once you arrive, it is hard to leave. You may want to go into Webster Springs to the cafe for lunch and the shop across the street. We had wonderful fall weather and spent many hours on the porch swing with a cup of hot chocolate and a book. There is plenty of walking space available and the round house is a must see. We plan to return.

Thank you for letting our family and our dogs spend an amazing week at your quiet and secluded mountain property. We hiked the property, swam and waded in the river, picked blueberries and apples and had campfires at night. It was just the perfect place for quality family time. Your home is well-equipped, clean, comfortable and very spacious. We will definitely consider a return trip!

This listing does not do justice to the remote serenity you will experience. This cabin was perfectly outfitted with essentials you can not bring with you. The winter memories my family now has are priceless, and we will definitely be returning! Thank you so much for your hospitality!

Well, it's been almost a month since our stay... and not a day has gone by that I haven't thought of how great our stay was at your camp. You truly have a diamond in the rough there. Thanks for allowing our family to spend Thanksgiving in such a fine fashion. Already planning our next opportunity. Sincerely, Jeremy Burgess

We have tried to be good caretakers of your beautiful property. Whoever did the design and construction of the house itself created a work of art. Several additional pieces, whether original or added, are also wonders. We marvel at the hand- made window frames, wooden latches, tables, porch railing slats, lamps, stairway, closets & cabinetry, insulated shutters, etc. The tall grasses & multitude of colorful flowers are more than welcome even w/o mowing. The trees & mountains around this pasture, & the quiet w/ intermittent animal sounds make this scene a restful, healing place. We are glad to be here.
