This cabin was a great getaway spot. The cabin was just as described by David and Donna and was impeccably clean when we arrived (bedding, towels, etc, were all great). Inside, the wood burner was a nice touch of home and my wife and I are now sold on the composting toilet idea...we just need a cabin to put one in now. The two-track trails were a nice way to get out and see the mountainside but by far our favorite activity was just hanging out on the beautiful and massive front porch. We will definitely make the trip again next year.

Great views of the snow capped mountains. Rustic Charm with the modern conviences of running water, electric, satellite tv, stereo, dvd movie collection, and forced air heat. The no flush toliet was a fun experience. We laughed and said it was like an outhouse only inside and no smell. The wood burning stove was an added bonus to remove the chill after spending the day hiking in the surrounding woods. Upon our arrival there were a couple of things that weren't as expected but a call to Donna and things were taken care of immediately. We plan on going back when the weather is warmer for the fishing and alot more hiking and seeing the area attractions. Wasn't able to do alot of exploring this time because of the snow. The snow just enhanced our experience. If someone is looking for a cabin that has luxuries like hot tubs, and such this isn't the cabin for you. But, if you enjoy nature, peace and quite, fishing, hiking, and just kicking back and relaxing then this is defintely the place for you. Donna and David were just great at taking care of our needs and we look forward to going again.

I am a native West Virginian and proud of it. I have fished and camped most of the state. I began trout fishing over forty years ago and have seen the true beauty of W.V.in many parts of our great state. This cabin fit myself and fellow trouters perfectly as we become a little gray to backpack and tent camp. The owner and caretaker could not have been more helpful through the entire situation. We were at the cabin in October when the surprise snow storm hit the east coast. We were forced to leave due to the quickly approaching storm with six inches already on the ground. I talked to the caretaker and owner and they both were concerned about our safety and understanding with our predicament. I would recommend this cabin to anyone who can appreciate the outdoors, solitude, W.V., and a great vacation deal with friends or family. The cabin was well kept, clean, and comfortable. The pictures do reflect the cabin but they can not show the true beauty of the property. We will return in May and I can't wait to wade the local trout streams (full of fish and crystal clear) and kick back on the front porch with John Prine on the box.

The pictures on the website are just perfect. When we arrived the cleaning lady was still there and everything was clean and fresh. Larry and I and our three dogs had an awesome time. The fall scenery was perfect and the weather was beautiful. Glad we went last week, the only thing that we weren't thrilled about was the toilet. Sorry but we like to flush, other than that the week was awesome. We took the dogs on daily walks and we did try to walk to the creek but gave up and and turned back. Later we decided to drive there using the logging road. As we drove to the creek we passed an ATV and it was my husband's uncle looking for us. It was so funny running into him and his dog. We then went to his uncle's house which was only a few miles away going thru the woods. If we went around the mountain it was over 30 miles. Thanks for sharing your cabins in the woods with us. We saw deer eating the left over apples many times this week, the dogs only saw them once but smelled them often. We didn't want to let the dogs chase them. Rudy, Riley and Pepper loved the porch and would stick their noses thru the tulips to smell all the different scents. LOL, It was such a great time to get away. Thanks much

Brought one of my college-age daughters and her friends here, and we really enjoyed the beautiful setting of this unique mountain cabin. It is really quite secluded and peaceful. The view from the porch is really spectacular, and there's a firepit with log stools to sit on right in front of the porch as well. The kids built a bonfire both of the two nights we stayed, with the plentiful firewood around the property. The cabin has an open, bright, large bedroom atop a spiral staircase (open from the stairs, no door) and three other bedrooms downstairs, counting a study with a futon sofa. There's also a sofa in the living room, so technically one could fit a maximum of 9 people here; we had 7 of us, plus our two little chihuahua-dachshund dogs. There is only one bathroom which is very basic and includes a composting toilet (does not use water or a flush), but it was quite adequate even for 7 of us. A few of us missed spotting the cold water knob and ended up taking scalding-hot showers, only because it was easy to mistake the water flow knob as the cold water knob because the real cold water knob is actually vertically above the hot water knob and hides behind the shower curtain's placement. The kids drove my daughter's Subaru down to the river (3 miles down the road) for some fishing and had a wonderful time sitting by and going into the river. From the photos she took, it looked just beautiful! (I didn't get to the river because my compact car couldn't handle it!) The owners recommend 4 wheel drive to get up the gravel driveway to the house; while I made it up there ok (just very slowly) with my very low-profile, compact car, I wouldn't have wanted to do that under wet weather conditions--and certainly couldn't have handled snow. (So just a warning to those traveling here in the fall or winter.) All in all it was a lovely little weekend getaway at a very reasonable price, and the drive from DC was so beautifully scenic that it really seemed an important part of what made the trip so interesting. Thank you, Donna and David, for sharing your mountain home with us.

Owner response: Our pleasure, Diane, we didn't know you before and I'd love to meet you now -- just a typical DC "but-" -- after these elections! So glad you had a great time and your trip is exactly why we decided to share our "camp," as they call it in the mountains. Mountain people need the work, the visitors, and we city types need their peace.

Just returned today from our trip and this was the best family vacation we've ever had!! Nobody wanted to come home, including the dogs. If you want somewhere secluded, quiet and away from it all, this is it! We rode ATVs, fished in creeks, bulit a fire and roasted hotdogs and made hobo pies everynight. Then just listened to the QUIET! No wifi or cell phones to distract us from each other, which to this mom was the highlight of the trip. The toilet did cause me concern at first but after the first day all concerns were gone and we are looking into putting a more modern version in our home instead of the huge ugly sandmound required. Donna was very nice and wanted to see to all of our needs and concerns. We can't wait to return! This is definately going to be one of our regular getaway spots!

Very quiet and peaceful! The front porch swing was my favorite place. Bird watching from there was great with a number of warbler and vireo species and plenty of veeries singing. View of the mountains was gorgeous. There were also plenty of paths to hike on and more birds to see and hear there. The house was clean and comfortable. Very much enjoyed my stay!

This house was so much bigger and nicer than i expected. It was definately tucked away from any other people and was so quiet, which was just what i was looking for. Donna was extremely helpful, and booking the place was super easy, even the day before i departed. I will most definately be returning asap and can already picture the amazing view from the porch swing. Awesome house!

Owner response: Thanks, Jack, we spent a few days up there just after you did and we're glad we had availability for you and that you had a few days. Next time you won't get lost on the way so you'll have more time :)

We arrived at cabin at Wednesday Dec 28-2011.We had 5 days ahead of us,to spend in this-in its own way magical place. We were traveling from Charlotte, where in the morning, was sunny and beautiful day for our 6 hour road trip.As we were approaching the region of WV,where the cabin is located, country around us was slowly changing into powdered white snow nature. So,our arrival at cabin was just perfect as we were praying for real winter weather,to be able ski during our stay in Snowshoe or,in case of more nature snow, around on cross-country skis..even our skis,we carried on roof, were having happy face's when they saw the snow around :)Place looked just winter-white peaceful and house had inviting aura, with all that snow around. When we get inside,we were very pleased. It is such a cozy interior.Old traditional wood floor, decoration accents, wood stove-we did use to warm our place every evening, butcher table-for cutting our vegetables and prepare our meals, lot of space for everybody to accommodate,private-very comfortable bedrooms-BEST SLEEP upstairs!!!-where you access through extraordinary wooden turning stairs, and LOT&LOT of great books all around(better then some libraries!!)..and more interesting things to notice around the house as this place has lot of history for sure..The toilet system is just something I did really like a lot. Some people may feel little uncomfortable at first moment, but I love it and I think,we all should start thinking more about using environment friendly technologies in our life's,to safe mother nature and preserve our valuable and irreplaceable water!!! We spend lot of time outside on porch, even it was cold out there-but crisp and sharp air was refreshing to breathe-WOW-night sky-can't find satisfying word's for it-you must see it :) We walk around during a day-woods are deep and full of soul of WV forest-quite and sleeping during the winter-hope,we will come back,to see it at other seasons also!!We went ski to Snowshoe one day,it is 45 minutes easy drive and to Canaan Valley second day,it's about 2 hours-but great skiing-not crowded as Snowshoe is.We had just wonderful time and our memories will last from time we spend at your cabin,Mrs.Donna! Our 4-legged family member Labrador Benjamin enjoyed his stay as well, with lot of freedom running while we walked woods.Thank you,SOOO MUCH,for sharing your cabin with us!Hope we come back in other seasons,to explore the area even more! Once we arrived at the camp, we didn't leave. We loved it! The kitchen and living room area was roomy and able to accommodate all 6 of us easily. The owner was extremely helpful and informative of the area. I wish we had more time, but we simply enjoyed the mountain, the snow, the trails, and riding our ATVs and Dirt Bikes. I would recommend this to others as a wonderful get-a-way to enjoy and appreciate nature and just relax! Unique toilet system-different--but not a problem. Thank you for sharing your home! Would love to come back again!

Owner response: Thank you Ann! We've been so delighted to read all the cards, emails, and even web comments -- compliments like this are why we keep our vacation house open to guests. We highly recommend the process to other owners: it employs locals for housekeeping and repairs if you live far away; any left over "profit" (that doesn't go to taxes) is so welcome for upgrade money. But absolutely, most of all, you meet guests like Ann; Americans are an amazingly wonderful tribe!

When taking our 4 kids on vacation often relaxing is not the term I use, but in the case of this wonderful West Virginia vacation that is exactly what we got. The cabin itself offers many unique features that required much exploration by all of us. There was the frontporch, the spiral staircase, the unique toileting system (wonderful to use), and many unique pictures/momentos on the walls. The grounds are peaceful, beautiful, and with lots of room for exploring right out your back door. We had marshmallows every night by the fire pit, and missed the fresh fruit on the property by a week or two! The owners of this cabin are very accommodating. Enjoy your stay, we did!

Hello Donna and David, Thank you for sharing your mountain top home with us. Although we had six straight days of torrential rain and dense fog, we still managed to have a genuinely good time. Watching the ever changing palette of the fog and clouds rolling over the mountain tops was fascinating. I'd love to return in the fall to see the foliage in all it's splendor.

We spent 12 days here in October, the leaves and mountains were beautiful. The house is so amazing and comfortable. The architecture is so unique and your are always noticing something your hadn't seen before. One word of caution, don't lock yourself into to many off -premises activities, because once you arrive, it is hard to leave. You may want to go into Webster Springs to the cafe for lunch and the shop across the street. We had wonderful fall weather and spent many hours on the porch swing with a cup of hot chocolate and a book. There is plenty of walking space available and the round house is a must see. We plan to return.

We visited the property during the summer (August 2010) and found the house not clean and with mice "signals" all over the place (even inside pots and pans in the lower cabinets). Enough for spoiling the whole holiday and for discouraging everyone to stay here.

Owner response: We were full all spring, summer and fall and have had more than 45 groups in the house this year alone. This is the only guest who had any such complaint since we opened and she is writing a full 5 months later. She stayed one night then called at dark. We immediately sent a cleaner over with apologies and ready to clean that night. The cleaners was all the pots and pans were drug onto the floor, the beds were scooted out to the center of the floor, and things were topsy-turvy. We could not find evidence to support her claim but offered to clean everything again immediately or to clean at her convenience. She said she was out that next afternoon. The cleaner and her son took bleach and wiped all surfaces and the floors, washed all the dishes, and then spent 4 hours recleaning everything else. There are "silent" (silent to humans; sirens to rodents) rodent repellers on 24/7 since this house is in the country and field mice are known to come in to look for water in the winter or food if left on the counters regularly. There are poisons in the areas where pets and humans cannot reach, not as needed but as a deterent so they are never needed. This house has a thorough cleaning on a regular basis -- I would not stay in it myself otherwise. The tenant stayed the week with no further complaints.

We have tried to be good caretakers of your beautiful property. Whoever did the design and construction of the house itself created a work of art. Several additional pieces, whether original or added, are also wonders. We marvel at the hand- made window frames, wooden latches, tables, porch railing slats, lamps, stairway, closets & cabinetry, insulated shutters, etc. The tall grasses & multitude of colorful flowers are more than welcome even w/o mowing. The trees & mountains around this pasture, & the quiet w/ intermittent animal sounds make this scene a restful, healing place. We are glad to be here.
