Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2003
My wife and I built our home in late 2003. After living in our dream home for 6 years we decided to return to the East Bay to be near (our two daughters and) our four granddaughters, all under the age of 5. We did not want to sell our home so we decided to provide our home as a vacation rental. This way we can return whenever the home is not occupied and show our granddaughters their goat and sheep friends on the neighboring property and help them indentify the birds (nearly 50 different birds appear throughout the year).
We intend to constantly upgrade our home with the amenities that make for a relaxing and memorable retreat or vacation. We encourage feedback from our guests so we can improve the "wine country" experience for future guests.
Thank you for considering our home for your "retreat."

I booked Oak Leaf Retreat for a girls' weekend and we had a wonderful time. The property was spacious and peaceful, making it a perfect getaway for a relaxing time, but close to wine country activities. The beds were very comfortable and there were no shortage of linens. The jet tub upstairs and the outdoor hot tub was perfect for a relaxing soak. We were able to easily cook dinner in the cook's kitchen, which was well stocked with all utensils, pots, pans and dishes. Clean, well-appointed and spacious, this home had it all. The short drive to Windsor and Healdsburg wineries and downtown shops and restaurants was a nice convenience. We had a fabulous time and I'd recommend this beautiful home to others who want a peaceful country estate with plenty of space to stretch out and roam.

We have stayed at Oak Leaf Retreat multiple times and every time we arrive, we promise to come more often. Stepping out on to the veranda and looking out over the vines I immediately feel a sense of calm greet me. I love making the time to read a book in one of the thoughtfully set out chairs with only the sound of the birds and the breeze through the trees. The cheerful bedspreads, large stylish kitchen and luxuriously large baths and showers make this a five star experience. The house is large enough to sleep up to ten people, but also feels cozy for a couple. I love the thick carpet and the thoughtful touches that include DVD's to watch, books to read and tea in the kitchen. We frequently bring out of town visitors to stay here. They love to wake up to a view of the vineyard, a visit to the famous local wineries, beautiful dry creek valley and the fantastic coffee at The Flying Goat cafe in Healdsburg. The selection of nearby restaurants in Windsor is a real plus and the local farmer's markets, outdoor movies and concerts in the summer are fantastic. Our young daughter loves visiting the cows down the lane and taking walks with us to see the horses on the paths through the vineyard. My husband and I love relaxing in the hot tub under the stars before bed with only the sound of the crickets. Whether it is a romantic weekend away or a family filled weekend that you're after, this is a memorable place to choose.
Owner response:Dear Christina, Your review made us blush. Thank you. And, do, indeed, come back soon. There are 5 new goats in the neighbor's pasture who are waiting to meet your daughter, Ruby. Kae.

Dear Kae and Andrew, Bill's first words on opening your front door were "I'm making them an offer!" He was ready to move there for the rest of our days. We had the eerie feeling we'd been cloned: that's the house we would build, to the last sash and bolt, our kitchen (easy to find things, it is the same as ours!, really), the view to die for, house perfectly nestled under the oaks, books on the shelves we've either already read or mean to read. And constant entertainment like the yellow lab chasing the goats around and around their pen, the sheep looking like cutouts, Jackrabbits in the grape vines and an orchestra of birds. It was heaven. and absolutely the best of all of Bill's eighty birthdays. We can't thank you enough for sharing your home. We all loved Oak Leaf Retreat. We talk of daughter and beau getting married there, and guests are planning to rent it for their anniversary. We'll be back again! Thank you for a wonderful weekend. Judy and Bill
Owner response:Dear Judy and Bill, We are deeply moved by your review. In a few words you described the way we felt when we lived there, in our piece of heaven. Please, please come back. The welcome mat, with key underneath, is always out. The McGuires

Fantastic homebase for a wedding weekend in Healdsburg!

The Oak Leaf Retreat is amazing! I was a groom-to-be and wanted a homebase for my wedding party — a place where my best friends could hang out and get ready together before my wedding in Healdsburg. I happened to stumble across this listing on VRBO and had a great conversation with the owners, Kae and Andrew. They are such warm and lovely people, and our talk confirmed for me that the Oak Leaf Retreat would be the perfect place to call home for my wedding weekend. And when we all arrived... Wow! My first thought was, "I should have gotten married HERE!" The place is that beautiful! Inside, the OLR has a very open feel to it — lots of room for people to mingle and socialize, and the kitchen is large, has granite countertops, and top-of-the-line appliances. Outside, we spent all our free time playing football on the giant lawn that backs-up to a vineyard, and had a couple of fantastic barbecue dinners while watching the sunset. There's a hot tub, lots of games and sports equipment to use, and a great wraparound porch. In short, this is a truly wonderful home for a Sonoma County retreat. I will definitely be back!
Owner response:Dear Jason, Andrew and I love to hear about the experiences of our guests. Thank you for choosing OLR and we are thrilled that you enjoyed your time at our home. Kae

Cooking in the expansive kitchen as soft breezes blow from the adjacent vineyards through the plentiful windows.....chatting on the deck while grilling and sipping wine....swinging in the double hammock between some of the stately oak trees...this lovely home has everything you might want for an unforgettable, relaxed wine country visit. Location: in the country near vineyards but minutes from town and many wineries. Comfort: first-class everything, from gigantic showers to sublime beds and linens. Kai and Andrew are helpful and thoughtful and we guests are lucky that we can now enjoy their tastefully, elegantly designed and appointed dream home. The photos don't nearly do it justice.
Owner response:Dear Susan, In a well worn phrase: our home is your home. Andrew and I are so pleased you enjoyed our "Retreat." Kae

Could not recommend the Oak Leaf Retreat more. This is a beautiful home and very well maintained. The kitchen is wonderful, great for entertaining and hosting a group of people. The outdoors is beautiful, we relaxed in the morning with coffee on the porch and felt as if we were hundreds of miles away if not continents from San Francisco. This is a great home for a group of friends and families to enjoy.
Owner response:Thank you, Robin. Do come again! Kae

Great house for a girls weekend!!

This was the most perfect place to hold our girls weekend!! The house was so beautiful and comfortable, in such a serene and picturesque location. Everything was perfect- The beds were so comfortable, the bathrooms wonderful, and the decor was great (many girls were trying to figure out where the bedding was from so they could buy it themselves!) . And, best of all was the gigantic and well-stocked kitchen. We cooked in every night and found every type of tool, pot or platter imaginable. The upstairs "great room" had beds tucked away in different nooks, so it accommodated many people sleeping and still gave a feeling of privacy. Andrew and Kae, the owners, are incredibly hospitable and helpful. They were quick to respond to my inquiry and gave great recommendations. This house exceeded our expectations, and I hope to rent from them again some day.
Owner response:Dear Brittany, Thank you for the wonderful comments. Andrew and I know that, in a sense, it's a "leap of faith" when you choose a vacation home from 3,000 miles away that the accommodations will live up to the VRBO description and photos. We look forward to your return visit. Sincerely, Kae

My family and I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Oak Leaf Retreat for three weeks. What a wonderful experience it was and oh, so cozy, and peaceful. This is a very clean, immaculate home that would work for so many different occasions. As a family, we enjoyed just being able to hang out together, cook great meals, get out and enjoy the sites, and do all those little things that you miss when your loved ones live in other places. The location is perfect too because you feel as though you are truly in the country but charming Old Town Windsor and Healdsburg are just minutes away. Wineries are everywhere you look and I so loved having my coffee on the huge wrap around porch as I watched the sunrise each morning. I highly recommend this home and property as they are really special and truly made some wonderful memories for me and my family. Many thanks to Kae and Andrew too...wonderful hosts!
Owner response:Thank you, Shawna, for a wonderful review. As you know, we lived in Oak Leaf Retreat for 6 years and it is a special place. Kae and I enjoy hearing that you had the similar experience of sipping morning coffee (or tea) on the porch. And, one of my favorite experiences, on clear nights, viewing the Milky Way as if it were merely miles away.

What a lovely way to spend a 40th Birthday!

I celebrated my 40th Birthday with a bunch of dear women friends (10 total) at the lovely Oak Leaf Retreat after scouring so many VRBO listings to find just the right spot. Kae & Andrew could not have been more friendly and accommodating as my decision came down to specifics such as 'how many people would be in real beds' and 'how many can fit at the dining table'. They return phone calls in a flash and could not have been more helpful as I was planning the weekend. They were even able to go up to the house and confirm a couple details for me, which I really appreciated! The home is so spacious and comfortable and the setting adjacent to the vineyards perfect! The home is actually in Windsor even though it's listed as Healdsburg so keep that in mind. Still, we chose it because Healdsburg is only a 10 min drive and it was still closer to downtown Healdsburg than many larger homes I was considering. The kitchen is well stocked and there are plenty of towels & bedding to go around. The hot tub is convenient right off the downstairs "master" bedroom. The "game room" was really perfect if we'd wanted to sit around and watch movies but we ended up hanging out downstairs for the most part. No one ever felt that they were in each others' way - so that was something I really treasured about the weekend and Oak Leaf. It truly felt like a "retreat" and I did feel I was a guest in Kae's home. Enjoy!
