Location: Lake Cowichan, Vancouver Island, The Islands, British Columbia, Canada (90 Minutes from Victoria International Airport)

Accommodations:  Log House, 4 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)

Our home consists of an original log cabin built in 1915, with an extensive addition added in 1975. All has been upgraded; new wiring, new insulation, new roof. The home has retained its character while moving into the 21st century with 'green' in mind.

There are four large bedrooms, with two en suite. One room, on the gabled second floor of the main cabin, is particularly beautiful, with the original cedar paneling and fir floors, and windows that look over the river. The kitchen is also large and equipped with all modern appliances. Heating is by electricity and by a wood burning fireplace. There is a large sunroom as well, which is a lovely place to relax with a book in the summer. From the French windows in the kitchen, one can see otters, beaver, mink and a variety of birds, depending on the season. We take our stale bread to the river's edge to feed the resident mallards. The river, in summer, is usually low and the rapids less severe than in the winter. it is an ideal time to tube down river and this has become a popular past time. Kayakers, too, favor the rapids.

The home sits on 1/2 acre of landscaped gardens and nestles beside the famed Cowichan River. Indeed, in winter time, when the river rises, it is sometimes no more than 5 meters from the balcony. One has to be careful not to be hit on the head by a salmon leaping upstream! The river is protected by the Canadian government as a Heritage river. It is home to 3 kinds of salmon that come regularly to spawn. It is home to brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout as well.

Lake Cowichan, which is the name of the town, is situated at the junction of Cowichan Lake and Cowichan river, and our home is just below the lake on the river. The lake is 40 miles long and offers all water recreational activities, with a marina and an outfitter that supplies kayaks, etc.

It is a small town of 3,000 people, but it has a large, well stocked supermarket, a local police force, banks and pharmacies. And a liquor store. In fact, all of these are a short 5 minute walk from our home, which is sheltered from the downtown by a quiet street and by the river.

The Cowichan Valley itself offers many additional recreational activities. It is the heart of the wine country on Vancouver island, and there are many estate tours on offer. There are numerous trails, including the Trans Canada trail which makes its way from Victoria, the largest city on the island, to the remote northern end. There are quaint harbours on the sea, only 40 minutes from our home. The countryside is spectacular so driving is a pleasure. We believe that our home offers a place of healing as well as rest and feel certain you will agree.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2002

We have lived overseas for 23 years. We bought our property through the Internet, site unseen, but fell in love with the place when we finally managed a visit. The dream now is to get there, pay the mortgage and find a means of support! It will all happen in time.

Why the Owner Chose Lake Cowichan

My aging mother lives on Vancouver Island and we wanted a place near her. We 'lucked out' in finding a place in semi - wilderness, a short commute from her city of Victoria.

The Unique Benefits of this Log House

Hiking, gardening, kayaking, tubing, fishing, hunting, mushroom gathering ( chanterelles, morals) are not just words here...they are all viable and fulfilling activities
