Owner's Map of Culpeper
Having lived in every region of the USA, we chose Culpeper to put down roots. The horse farm we have developed is so beautiful and private, just the place to retreat to in this busy world. As an RN, I was briefly in the Air Force, and my husband continues as an AF officer. My 2 teens say we can never leave, and keep themselves happy with all the natural activities of the farm-the perfect antidote for stress. As 1 of 17 children, I have always been easy with a crowd, so come and see us!

I have no idea where to start but here it goes. What a great place! We had the best time on vacation here. My kids loved fishing, riding the gator, checking out the horses at the stables, the campfire and the list goes on. We were able to stay at the farm and venture out to DC (about an hour away), we saw the caverns nearby, we drove Skyline drive where we saw many deer. We braved a 4 hour drive to Philly and saw many sights there. We were very busy as well as took it easy. I would recommend this property to friends and relatives. We miss Sonny's BBQ and many other great restaurants we came across on our ventures. My daughter misses Cleo and says to give her a hug.

Spent the last two weeks at Fancy Fox with my wife and three children: 8 year old boy, and 6 and 1 year old girls. We couldn't have been happier. Colleen and Alan are absolutely wonderful interesting people, eager to please and thoughtful, as is the rest of the family and especially their two daughters. They are there to help with ideas and suggestions and anything else you might need. The lodge is a true home away from home with a well stocked comfortable kitchen/dining area and comfy neat bedrooms and bathrooms and an indoor play area for the kids. You will not be bored: there is more than enough to do on the property itself with exquisite vistas, miles of trails, fishing, outdoor playset, skeet shooting, barbecuing, lawn games, horses, and a delightful inground pool. But if that's not enough there's much more to do and see in the surrounding areas. Worked great for us with kids but would work just as well for others. Look forward to a return visit. Highly recommended!

We had a great time at the farm. I really enjoyed the experiences there and the warmness and kindness from Mrs. B and her family. The lodge was comfortable and cozy. My 12 year old caught many fish, My two year old feed the horses and he loved the pool, I gave tours in the gator, and I finally got to make smores and they were delicious!!!!
Owner response:It was wonderful to see the excitement of this family enjoying all the farm had to offer! Great people who fished, swam, fed horses carrots,"gatored", utilized the campground, BBQ'd, and enjoyed peace, quiet and family time on the lawn in the evening. Very nice people.

I rented this house with a group of buddies the other weekend and we had an absolute blast. The property is beautiful and the hospitality that we were shown was second to none. Mrs. Colleen and "The Colonel" really took care to make sure that our group was well taken care of. They even bought a new smoker specifically so that our group could make some authentic ribs While we were there, we took advantage of the opportunity to do some fishing, shoot skeet, drive the gator around the property and used the well stocked kitchen. We had planned on building a big bonfire in the fire pit, and they had even set aside some hay and wood for us, but it started to rain so we had to scratch that plan. We also aren't into horses, but this was an option as well and they certainly looked pretty and well taken care of. I would highly recommend this property to my friends and family. It is really close to D.C. (only about 1:15 away, with some great groceries on the way to stock up on supplies) which is surprising given how isolated it feels from civilization and the congestion that comes with it. It was a breath of fresh air to get everyone outside of the city for the weekend and be able to do it so easily. I think this would be a great rental for large groups of guys (like us), a group of couples (lots of activities to keep you interested for a few days) or even large families who are interested in nearby places to do a "stay-cation." The property is really attractive for people of all ages and I think you will have a great time.
Owner response:Whit and his party were gentlemen and we enjoyed having them stay at the Lodge. It was fun for us to see their enthusiasm and we were glad the meat smoker was a hit.

Just got back from Fancy Fox Farm, where our group of ten guys spent a great weekend! To a man everyone was enchanted with the genuine welcome and care extended to them by Colleen, Al, and their children. Upon arrival the guys (me included) were knocked back by tranquil beauty of the natural setting and the cozy ambience of our lodgings. The house was very clean, towels were laid out in all bedrooms, and the kitchen was equipped for a chef. For a moment the TV was on the blink, but Al with a broken hand and his daughter worked liked the dickens and got it on line in time for LSU-Auburn! We had a blast at the skeet range, spent a lot of time enjoying the outdoors, fished and generally fell in love with the place. The campfire was wonderful, we hopped in to Culpepper one eveining and did Skyline Drive on our way back to DC. Many guys said they planned to bring their families back for a special good time. P.S. - we also did the outdoor grill each day and ate till we dropped. The best thing(s) from our visit: Colleen/Al and family - really nice people; the homey lodge; the beauty and peace of the surrounding nature; the range of options we could engage in together or alone; and getting away from the big City to our roots - The country!!

Our family of eight stayed at Fancy Fox Farm during the week of July 4. We had a great time. The Burketts were kind and helpful at every turn. We took our 3-year old granddaughter up to the horse barn where Dierdre took her for a ride on her thoroughbred. We were welcome to use the Burkett's wireless internet at the main house. Our cellphones worked fine at our place. Colleen and Alan were eager to help. Their daughters babysat for us one night. It was a hot week with and the pool was a godsend. It was big enough for our crowd with a diving board and beautiful, clear water, an exceptionally well maintained pool. The setting is picturesque with its rolling hills, horses grazing and thick woods where we saw two fawns on our first night. The house stayed mostly cool enough with the bedroom window air conditioners even though outside temperatures were in the upper 90's. The house was adequate for our needs and our family reunion was in all ways delightful. Upstairs are two bedrooms in tandem with two more bedrooms down stairs. The kitchen was supplied with cooking tools, pots and pans, etc.; the new gas grill was great. We attended the opera at nearby Castleton Festival, went to Monticello, and toured the skyline drive. There is lots to do in the area. We would go back again - a very nice place. NB

Our 12 days at Fancy Fox Farm were wonderful. There were 6 of us in April 2010--two grandparents, daughter, son-in-law, son 3 1/2 and daughter 7 1/2. The livingroom was spacious with cozy fireplace for all of us to gather, comfy beds and charming decor, kitchen with all of the necessities, a play area upstairs with toys and the handicap bathroom was perfect for my husband. The house seemed much larger than 1700 sq. ft. There was so much to do on the farm--archery, slip and slide, stomping in the stream (too cold at that time of year for the swimming pool), play equipment with a fort, croquet, horsebackriding, feeding the horses, even a horse show put on by the owners' two teenage daughters, Alanna and Deidre. Less than 20 minutes to Culpepper there was lots of shopping and restaurants and many wineries in the area. The Lurais Caverans and Skyline Drive made a great day trip. The owners, Colleen and Alan, were always ready to provide anything we needed. Colleen even sent over a snow cone machine one day for the kids. The house was very clean and when we were there they were in the process of finishing the upstairs bathroom and painting the outside of the house which are now finished. The only disappointment was that we were not aware that the two bedrooms upstairs were attached in a way that one had to go through the other bedroom to get to the bath--which ended up not being a problem for us after all. We had a family reunion luncheon with 17 people in the livingroom, dining room and conservatory of the Manor House which Collen catered for us. The food was wonderful and our hostess charming. We would all definately recommend this place to family and friends. Our Virginia relatives who came to the luncheon were very impressed with the place.
