A Wonderful Experience!

Our two families vacation together every two years. We've had nearly 20 years of experience renting with VRBO and this house has been our favorite to date! The pictures and description don't do the house justice at all. The house is perfectly set up for 2 families. There are 2 rooms with king beds, a loft with a futon and lots of space for sleeping bags, if needed, and a huge downstairs bedroom with 2 double beds and its own full bathroom. This bedroom has a TV, Wii, microwave and sink - our 3 teenage boys thought they'd gone to heaven. The owners have placed a hammock and swing on "Inspiration Point", in one corner of the property. There is also a lovely fire pit with 8 seats. It was a bit too warm for a fire, but we made one anyway and roasted marshmallows for s'mores. The house is high (really high) above the water. The walk to the dock is down a very steep driveway and then a very steep set of stairs. This was no problem for our families (although we were sweating and panting each time we climbed back up!), but might be tough for people who are less ambulatory. Virginia has so much to offer tourists. We went tubing, kayaking, rented a pontoon boat, visited Mountain Lake Resort (where Dirty Dancing was filmed), toured Monticello and Appomattox Court House. We also geocached and just spent a lot of time hanging out in the 4 Adirondack chairs on the deck of the rental. In our many years of vacationing together we have never gone to the same place twice, but this wonderful rental would be the one to return to, for sure!

Much more than we expected!

We've been renting from VRBO for 15 years. This is by far the best experience we've had. The property is definitely secluded, and it is on a mountain! The photos do not do the house justice--we immediately felt comfortable and at home. We enjoyed coffee on the porch in the mornings and cocktails in the evenings. While the basement was a perfect "lair" for three teenaged boys, the main floor was well suited for family meals and evening game night. The owner IMMEDIATELY responded when we found ourselves without power one morning. A tree had fallen across the power lines further down the mountain; the power company was there within an hour and by the time we returned from a day at the beach everything was up and running again. We enjoyed the nearby state park, spent a day tubing on the New River, and geocached across the area. Highly recommend renting a pontoon boat for an afternoon--the kids loved jumping off the boat's roof into the lake and it was a great way to cool off and see the entire lake. Our day trip to Monticello and Appomattox Court House was another highlight (but skip the Natural Bridge--it's not). Our drive through the Virginia Tech campus was an after thought, but would recommend it just for a the architecture--what a beautiful campus. We would definitely recommend this property. Thanks again!

Great Time at the Lake

Guest: Fun Loving Father with Family (Greenville SC)
Date of Stay: 07/17/10 Review Submitted: 08/11/10

My family spent a week here and had a great time. The pictures barely do it justice. The view of the lake was wonderful. Everything was just as described in the listing. We rented boats and a wave runner from Claytor Lake Water Sports and they picked us up at the dock by the house saving us a 30 minute drive. We also rode a portion of the New River Bike Trail and took one of the Kayak trips offered by Tangent Outfitters. We did not run out of things to do. The home was new, had plenty of room and all the beds were comfortable. During the two rainy days we played air hockey and watched the big screen TV. We particularly enjoyed watching the humming birds at the feeders. We are definitely considering staying there again.
