Location: La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada (Two Hours from Quebec City, Qc, Canada)
Accommodations: cottage, 6 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 3 Baths (Sleeps 9)
Keywords: Summer Cottage
This 1898 Victorian Cottage, named Rayon d'Or, is an historic summer house built by Charles Warren. It is located in La Malbaie, called Murray Bay by early English explorers, who entered the bay from the St. Lawrence and were grounded when the tide went out. The community first became popular with Americans when President William Howard Taft and Justice John Harlan came at the turn of the 20th century to fish and play golf. Pictures and a wooden model of Rayon d'Or are displayed in the local museum, along with a history of the growth of the American community and the architecture of houses that were constructed during the early 1900s.
Golf, fishing and hiking continue to be activities pursued today, as well as whale watching on the St. Lawrence at Tadoussac and picnicking on the rocks by the River. The beauty of the Charlevoix Region is well-appreciated by knowledgeable travelers. Visitors to Rayon d'Or enjoy the history and beauty of Quebec City and the vibrant arts community of Baie St. Paul. There is outstanding golf at both the 27-hole course at the Manior Richlieu or at the Murray Bay Club, where President Taft often played and which is said to be the fourth oldest golf course in North America. Hiking and climbing for the beginner or expert is available at the near-by Laurentian Mountains in the Parc Jardin. However, the pool in the back garden at Rayon d'Or and the spacious property entice a family to stay at home and enjoy the relaxing comfort of the Cottage.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1988
We have been visiting Murray Bay since the late 1970s, and we were finally able to purchase an historic Cottage in this beautiful community. Our children have grown up spending their summers at Rayon d'Or and practicing their French. There is not now, nor will there ever be, a TV at Rayon d'Or, much to the delight of all visitors, young and old. There are plenty of board games and jig-saw puzzles, should the weather not cooperate with your plans for an outdoor adventure.
Why the Owner Chose La Malbaie
Our primary reason to buy in La Malbaie is that our family could enjoy a healthy life-style, with exposure to French speakers in Quebec, without having to cross an ocean. The weather is delightful and is a mix of sea breezes from the St. Lawrence and cool, clean Arctic air. The values we teach our children are to enjoy nature and the environment and not the shopping malls of the cities.
