We vaulted the ceilings, and added stained glass and sky lights to make this a bright, cheerful escape. Enter off a private deck into a wide tiled hallway with a desk and bookshelves. To the right of the kitchen, over the bar, is the living room and the Alice-in- Wonderland sitting room. Just past the kitchen sink is a laundry dryer stack and kitchen pantry. To the left is the bath area and bedroom.
There is an extensive book and DVD collection for you to enjoy along with area maps and brochures of area attractions and upcoming events along with menus collected from some of our favorite restaurants.
The generous deck (13’ x14’) is a great place to entertain al fresco. Spacious patio with table and chairs, complete with an umbrella and cushions allow outside dining. A gate at the top of the stairs keeps your dog safe beside you. We are dog friendly to well-behaved members of your family.

Artist Cottage Across from Marsh, Downtown St. Marys
Year Purchased: 2002
Why the Owner Chose St. Marys
There are three huge magnolia trees, but the property is sunny, and I love to look across North River to Fernandina and see boat traffic. I like the different living levels: patio, downstairs decks, and railed upper deck. We’ve had some terrific parties on the downstairs patio: cookouts, fire pit evenings, and dancing. It’s fun to meet new people and socialize with old friends as well. Come join us!
Whether you are vacationing, looking for property, or working, our hope is that this “artist cottage” becomes an “island of pleasure. Basic start up supplies are provided, along with a “Welcome to Norris St.” gift basket. We don’t want you to grocery shop your first night here, so we’ve left snacks, fruit, beverages and flowers to make you feel at home. When we say, “Just bring your clothes!” we are pretty sure that everything else you need is already here.
ABOUT ST. MARYS
Lots of us walk in the morning. There’s a great 3.5 to 5 mile loop that takes you downtown to the river where you get the gentle kiss of a breeze in the morning. Sometimes, you even get the present of a dolphin swimming beside you. There is a group of waterfront feral cats that volunteers have adopted and feed daily. Many times they mistake a walker for a meal provider and bound out of their safe places with a hopeful meow.
There’s always something going on downtown: the big swoosh of the Coast Guard loading up bright and early on their vessels, boaters headed out to land the big one, or couples headed over to catch the Cumberland ferry. You might wander through as vows are being exchanged in the park, or catch it just right as an arts and crafts festival concludes with a live band and street dance. This is a friendly southern coastal town.
We are fortunate to live in such a peaceful, beautiful spot. We know that once you have tasted St. Marys-by-the-sea, you will acquire a taste for the town and its people. St. Marys will always have a place in your heart.
The Unique Benefits at this House
There’s a Chinese tallow tree laden with wind chimes, birdfeeders, and birds. We get cardinals, mockingbirds, house finches, Carolina wrens, blue jays, red-bellied woodpeckers, mourning doves, goldfinches, painted buntings, great crested flycatchers, ring-necked turtle doves, hummingbirds, downy woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, tufted titmice, Carolina chickadees, robins, warblers, brown thrashers, cedar waxwings, bluebirds, and the occasional hawk, owl, and bat. If you get up early enough, you’ll hear this slight whirring overhead, and you’ll notice ibises and egrets headed to the river for a day of flying and fishing. It’s quite a symphony of bird sounds and songs throughout the day.
When you are upstairs, you have a bird's eye view of everything going on around you. We loaded the walls, ceilings, and floors with insulation so it's extremely quiet and private up there. Because the ceilings are vaulted, you walk in and immediately take a deep breath because it doesn't feel cluttered or crowded. We made the upstairs deck as large as we could and that contributes to the feeling of spaciousness as well. Because our weather is generally so mild, it's easy to just leave the front door open, raise a few windows and enjoy a wonderful cross draft. It's a very pleasant space.
You are but a five minute walk from the downtown waterfront park on the St. Marys river and ferry to Cumberland Island, shopping and restaurants, and another five minute walk in the other direction to the Meeting St. boat ramp where you can view North River.
This is a great two bedroom, one bath bungalow......perfect for temporary headquarters while you work, vacation, or relocate.
Felicia and Patrice will wow you with their beautiful accessories and expertise! If you are looking for something to fluff your place with, or a special gift for any occasion, you will be thrilled with your purchase! It's all about the pamper!
These friendly ladies will answer all your questions and provide with arm loads of current publications about our area and upcoming events
Hand made fudge and interesting gifts and necessities for Cumberland Island. Shannon and Angie will make you feel at home!
Louise does terrific teas, sandwiches and soups and her bread pudding is legendary.....Open for lunch.
Donna always has an interesting collection of antiques, art, and beautiful things....what fabulous windows she creates for us to drool over.
Steeped in history, Jerry and Gaila's hotel, restaurant and bar span the years with years past and present.......for generations to come
This is well worth the visit...a phenomenal collection of submarine memorablilia and knowledgeable staff
Here you can see the grandeur of the Carnegie's presence on the island .....preserved for centuries to come
Owner's Map of St. Marys
I am Elizabeth Gray, a native St. Marys resident. Since childhood, I have always loved the Norris St. home. I grew up on the other corner of the block. My family and friends are here and so has been my career. When I finished school, I started my own business, Gray’s Gallery and Custom Frame Shop. It’s been a place where I have framed lots of artwork for other people, and a place where I’ve displayed and sold my own work. Designing spaces, construction projects and furnishing and decorating are some of my favorite things. My best “therapy” is gardening. There’s something terrific about digging in the dirt. In short, Norris St. has provided me with a huge palette to be creative on all those levels. My hope is that you will truly enjoy what was designed for you.

Elizabeth's cottage has been the most beautiful and comfortable cottage we have EVER stayed in! Spotless in every room, plush towels, exquisite bed, everything you need to prepare meals (but don't miss the fantastic restaurants in town), friendly neighbors and much, much more. Elizabeth, you are the kindest and most caring host! Thank you for being so enthusiastic about your community and making us enjoy it even more. Thank you for caring about everything. We will definitly return and will tell everyone we know how great it is.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this cozy cottage during Christmas week 2011. The rooms are as pictured and the king bed was wonderful. We also found the kitchen stocked with many unexpected goodies. I highly recommend this property and the historic district in downtown St. Marys.

This B&B was several steps beyond anything my wife and I have experienced. Appearance, amenities, cleanliness and maintenance were all, as advertised. The bonus is that the owner, Elizabeth, is personally involved with all aspects and makes sure guests are over the top pleased (e.g. we mentioned some books that we would have expected to see on the bookshelves, and they appeared there the next morning). She is also an exceptional artist, her gallery a few blocks away. We bought a framed picture that she painted of St. Mary's harbor, that hangs on our family room wall, a reminder of the memorable time we spent together. If you want quaint, quiet, and simple get away, a boat ride away from a place like Cumberland Island, I can't recommend this property and its owner more highly.

Have to say that Elizabeth's cozy cottage met our expectations and more. Furnishings were comfortable, beautiful antiques, bed linens were luxurious. Her art work was everywhere and was the perfect accent to the place. Also was stocked with goodies and drinks so you didn't have to run right out to the grocery store. There were even treats for the pups. We relaxed each evening on the deck while gazing up at the stars. Elizabeth was available for anything we needed. Be sure to visit her art gallery - amazing! Downtown St. Mary's is a quaint little town with just enough to do, but not so much that you can't fit it all in. Sidewalks everywhere, so if you have bikes, bring them. You can walk or bike everywhere. Several great places to eat. The waterfront is a great place to watch the boats and wildlife. There is a park there with swings and a playground for the kids. Would definitely recommend taking the Ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore and taking a kayak trip with UpTheCreek Expeditions. The owners/tour guides were very knowledgeable and certainly added to the experience. St. Mary's is also convenient to St. Augustine and Savannah and everywhere inbetween. Can't say enough about our stay. Can't wait to go back.

This was our first visit to St. Mary's and from the very start Elizabeth made us feel welcome. She made everything so easy - from the transaction of the rental itself - to learning about the city and helping us plan a family vacation. Elizabeth has thought of everything you could possible need in the rental. It was very clean and the decor was classic. She mixes her work (beautiful you will want to visit her gallery) with antique furniture and carefully selected pieces - to create a warm and welcoming artist cottage. Everything was in working condition and Elizabeth made sure we knew how to reach her with any questions or concerns. She made us feel cared for and welcomed without being pushy or intrusive. The property was described in an accurate manner and it was better than expected. My favorite thing about this rental is the king sleigh bed. It is so comfortable ! Our family of four slept easy in the rental , using the master bedroom and the pull out sofa. If you take a trip to St. Mary's don't miss Cumberland Island. The people in St. Mary's are very friendly and down to earth. We had an amazing time. Thank you Elizabeth for all you do to create a real home away from home. We hope to return.

From the moment you walk into the cottage, you feel the attention to all the details that Elizabeth has provided. She has made this space such a welcoming, warm and cozy escape. Her beautiful watercolor art work (I purchased one before leaving) adds not only beauty to the walls, but allows you to feel the effort that she has put into making you feel her personal commitment that your stay is beyond pleasant. The cottage has everything and more than you need. Every detail is taken care of. She had a beautiful fresh flower arrangement, fruit in the refrigerator, drinks, snacks........everything! It truly felt like "home" while we were there. Meeting Elizabeth was extra special as well. She is now a friend. I look forward to visiting again and again. Thank you Elizabeth.

First off, St. Marys is a delight, beautiful and historic, low-country marches and open waters, ancient oaks and golden early morning and dusk light. Truly a treasure. And then there's Elizabeth's apartment, fantastic. Those who wrote that one need bring only clothes were right-on correct . . . everything you could need is provided, and not only in quantity but in quality as well. Being so well taken care of really adds to the sense of enjoyment St Marys holds for its visitors. I could go on and on about allowing Elizabeth to be your "hostess" in St Marys -- suffice to say this is a special town, she is a special person, and her apartment is also quite special. It all adds up to a wonderful time (and oh yeah, that king size bed is one of the most comfortable in which you'll ever sleep!). Highly recommended!!!

I spent the 2nd week of my vacation in St. Marys in Elizabeth's other rental, this lovely 2nd story charmer (go to her bungalow to see my first review). This was totally different but equally as fantastic. The dormer window seats begged to be sat on and the king sized bed was to die for with all its plump pillows and comfy mattress. Again antiques were used throughout the home and gave it such character. The Alice in wonderland nook was a great place to sit back and read a good book while looking at the terrific view out of the window. I forgot to mention in the other review that all of Elizabeth's rentals come with scads of good books and dvds for your enjoyment. You can choose to cook a great meal inside or outside , on the grill, or opt for one of the fantastic restaurants in town. Also if you get to Amelia Island they have a bakery with the most fantastic cupcakes. You are also greeted by your neighbors at either rental and they make you feel right at home and they also have some pretty special dogs that you can pet and love. Pets are welcome and Elizabeth even leaves treats for them. All I can say is that I am spending my winters here from now on. If you're smart you'll book a reservation here for 1 week or more, if you're lucky and have the time, anytime of the year. You will ahve the time of your life.

What a beautiful place… really a home away from home. All my needs were met, from peaceful surroundings, beautiful birds and trees, to snacks, mosquito repellent and hand sanitizer. It was luxury, comfort and beauty beyond anything I could have expected. And a lovely walk away from downtown St. Marys and the waterfront, restaurants, etc. I can’t wait to come back!! If I could give more than five stars, I would. Highly, highly recommended!

What a treat! Elizabeth thinks of everything. We stayed for a week and didn't want to leave. The home is immaculate , comfortable and close to the downtown. Elizabeth is a ball of energy - charming, helpful and genuine. We cannot wait to return to St. Mary's and to stay at Elizabeth's again. Great job! Thank you for making our holiday very special.
