Why the Owner Chose Barrier Dunes

We spent several years exploring the Gulf Coast and the Georgia Atlantic coast. We were looking for property close to the beach with ample opportunity for outdoor activities. We were not interested in typical high density areas with goofy golf, spring break bars and other night life. We wanted the peace and serenity found a century ago, a place to slow down, watch the sun rise and set, walk in the dunes or ride bicycles. When we stumbled across the forgotten coast and Cape San Blas we knew we had found what we are looking for.

The Unique Benefits at this Townhome

Some of the unique benefits we enjoy when visiting the cape are hiking through seven miles of state park, snorkeling in the bay, renting a sea kayak or riding a horse on the beach.

A
Nature Trail

At the entrance to Saint Joe State Park there is a charming trail that winds through the brush and ends at the bay of St Joe

B
The Beach

Walk north for about half a mile and you enter the State Park. Walk another seven miles and see narry a sole, only dunes, birds the occational deer or dolphin

C
Ocean Side Pool

Relax by a charming pool overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

E
Cone Heads

Order a sandwich, a salad or an icecream cone.

G
Snorkeling Heaven

The bay is less than 4 feet deep for hundreds of yards out

H
Dolphins

Rent a pontoon boat and cruise to the end of the Cape. If you go in the morning I'll bet a school of dolphins will come and check you out.

I
Golf

St. Joseph's Bay Country Club is a 18-hole golf course located along beautiful St. Joseph's Bay off County Road C-30. Mature trees, lush fairways, sloping greens, and strategically placed hazards high

J
St Vincient Island

The only way to get ther is by boat. Bring your own food and water and be prepared for lots of walking. I guarentee it is worth the hike.

K
Boss Oyster

Apalachacola has the best Oysters in the world!!!

L
Inland Pool

This pool has solar heating. With good weather it opens by the end of March and closes in November

Owner's Map of Barrier Dunes

My wife Sara and I, our two girls, Claudia and Kirsten and our dog pumpkin love to travel as a family. We like the outdoors, to play tennis or ride bikes on the beach.

The perfect trip

This was our first time to Cape San Blas but will not be our last. We stayed at Barrier Dunes during April 2011. The weather was perfect and the home was perfect as well. We ate lots of oysters fresh from the bay. We also cooked in several nights and really enjoyed the well stocked kitchen. The home was only a short walk from the beach and the owners have all the chairs and umbrellas that you will need. We also rode bikes to the state park which is right around the corner from Barrie Dunes. This is a great place to bring your family.

Relaxing Getaway with Furry Children

Accommodating, accommodating, and accommodating! The owners were especially friendly and helpful. First, I didn't realize that most of the rentals were Sat-Sat, but the owner accommodated our arrangements for Mon-Mon. She also took the time to give suggestions for things to do! To be honest, the unit is not high end/luxury (who wants that?), but it is pet-friendly-- cozy and comfortable! With four pets, I didn't want high end, could you imagine the guilt and worry! The floors were tile/Gerber carpet, which is great because of the sand. My only suggestion: shelving for the second bedroom's closet... Otherwise, great unit! This unit provides everything that is needed, plus I was offered an affordable rate-- plus 20% off! Another site offered me the same accommodations for twice the rate! We were looking for a no frills vacation that would be a first time beach vacation with our dogs. We spent several days lounging on the beach with our dogs, leashes of course (but, off leash when applicable). The owners had everything you could imagine for the beach: boogey boards, dog tie up, umbrellas and beach chairs! Plus, they had 4-5 bikes, which we would ride to Coneheads for ice cream cones and the state park. We swam in the 2 pools, played tennis and at night, played board games. This was a low key, relaxing and fun vacation! There are several decks to sit outside and for the dogs to lounge and enjoy the perfect 70 degree weather. The first day, we bought groceries for the week and grilled out every night! We also chose one night to eat at Indian Pass Raw Bar-- A must! Delicious Oysters and Crab legs, plus we had a blast dancing with the locals! The owners suggested we rent a boat: pet friendly, took all four dogs, went snorkeling (have been in better areas), but we got to see dolphins and enjoyed the warm weather. Did not want to return to Chicago and are considering buying a beach house there! I highly recommend this unit and will be back to visit the Cape!

We had a wonderful time on Cape San Blas. I must say, for us northeners, it was a real cultural experience! ;) My kids LOVED it - especially my 13-year-old daughter who is currently reading Gone With the Wind and fantasizing about "the old South" !! :) The Cape was so pretty. The beaches were very quiet compared to our beaches. And the sand....Thank you for sharing your spot with us! I'm watching the television news and worrying about the Florida coast now in a way that I wouldn't have before. Now I understand what is to be lost if this oil spill really comes ashore!! We're keeping our fingers crossed here and hoping that your beautiful dolphins, pelicans, sandpipers, turtles and other wildlife are not harmed. Thanks again. We had a great time!

Fabulous Visit

The townhouse was gorgeous and fully stocked, as promised. We absolutely LOVED the beach and plan to return to Cape San Blas again. Everything you could want was available. We were able to cook and bake whatever we desired. It was also well equipped with toiletries and a hairdryer so you felt like you were at an upscale hotel. There was a large assortment of magazines, books and puzzles, something for everyone. The owners provided excellent communication and answered questions quickly and accurately.

Not a stellar experience

Guest: BeachFam (North GA)
Date of Stay: 06/21/08 Review Submitted: 07/03/08

The unit was spacious and the location was good. We absolutely LOVED the beach and plan to return to Cape San Blas again. Barrier Dunes is a nice community with beautiful beaches. However, we will not be staying in this unit. The unit was sufficient for our needs but some small details were overlooked. For example, the AC upstairs went out halfway through our stay, there were only 5 forks in the kitchen, we were short one pillowcase our first night (a trip to the real estate company fixed that) and overall the unit was a little dirty (walls, furniture) and needed updating. A streetlight shining in the downstairs bedroom was annoying. We hung a blanket on the door to block some of the light. The owners provided excellent communication before our trip and gave us great directions on how to get there. They answered questions quickly and accurately. We were a little surprised when we arrived at the condition of the unit.

Owner response:We take guest feedback very seriously. In response to this review we fired our management company, ensured the kitchen is fully stocked, bought extra pillows, pillow cases, linens, towels (all previously provided by the management company), installed a new AC unit, painted the unit, installed tile floors, and installed blackout curtains in the guest bedroom ( the street light was only installed several weeks prior to this guest arrival and we were unaware of the issue). We have not had a single complaint in two years since this feedback.
